Journal of Urban Design, 2013Co-Authors: Leah R Depriesthricko, David L PrytherchAbstract:Integrating place perceptions in context-sensitive development remains a challenge for planners and designers, particularly in de-industrialized cities desperate for downtown revitalization. Writings abound on sense of place and participatory planning, but often underestimate the challenges of linking them in practice. This study explores methods of gauging downtown sense of place by gathering ‘downtown stories’ and conducting semi-structured interviews in the post-industrial city of Middletown Ohio, which a national magazine named as one of ‘America's Fastest Dying Towns’. Through public forums it also begins articulating ‘downtown visions’—place perceptions and hopes for revitalization—in the language of planning and design. While the study suggests gauging such perceptions is essential for any meaningful framework for community participation, doing so is fraught with difficulties that urban designers must confront.

Dunal] is in the initial stages of commercialization; however, little information has been published concerning flowering and ripening periods of commercially available cultivars. Cultivars with late flowering or extended bloom period could be useful to growers for avoiding crop losses to late spring frosts. The objectives of this study were to determine if mature trees of commercially available pawpaw cultivars display: 1) concentrated bloom periods, 2) late flowering characteristics, 3) high fruit set, and 4) concentrated fruit ripening characteristics that were related to concentrated bloom periods. An orchard was planted in the spring of 1998 in a randomized block experimental design with 8 replicates. In 2004 to 2006, the cultivars ‘Middletown’, ‘Overleese’, ‘PA-Golden’, ‘Sunflower’,’Wells’, ‘Wilson’, ‘NC-1’ and the advanced selection 2-54 were evaluated for flower number per tree, density, peak, and duration, as well as trunk cross-sectional area, fruit set, days between flower and harvest peak, duration of harvest, fruit weight, yield, and number of fruit per cluster. An extended flowering period or larger flower number did not improve fruit set. Mature trees of commercially available pawpaw cultivars did not display concentrated bloom periods or ripening periods; however, ‘Wells’ and ‘Middletown’ did have late flowering peaks (maximum number of flowers) that could allow a partial crop if early spring frosts destroy flowers around or at the flowering peak. However, the average fruit size of ‘Wells’ and ‘Middletown’ is small and undesirable for commercial production. The North American pawpaw [Asimina triloba (L.) The pawpaw fruit has both fresh market and processing appeal, with an intense flavor that resembles a combination of banana, mango, and pineapple (1). This information would be valuable to growers for selection of cultivars for regional suitability and microclimates. Pawpaw flowers are strongly protogynous and are likely self-incompatible (8), although some cultivars, such as ‘Sunflower’, may be self-fruitful. Pollination is by flies (Diptera) and beetles (Nitidulidae), and possibly other nocturnal insects (2, 3). Each fruit cluster develops from an individual flower. Seedlings normally flower when trees reach a height of about 1.8 m; cropping is achieved at five to eight years after planting. Grafted trees usually set fruit five to six years after planting, although some cultivars such as ‘PA-Golden (#1)’ may crop in the fourth year (7). The bloom period for a pawpaw tree usually occurs over 3 to 4 weeks; however, bloom periods for specific cultivars have not been evaluated. Late flowering or extended bloom period could be useful traits to growers for avoiding crop losses due to late spring frosts and microclimates that are frost prone. Metal pollution investigation of Goldman Park, Middletown Ohio: Evidence for steel and coal pollution in a high child use setting

KrekelerAbstract:Abstract A geochemical investigation of both ballfield sediment and street sediment in a park adjacent to a major steel manufacturing site in Middletown, Ohio revealed Pb, Cu, Cr and Zn exceeded background levels, but in heterogeneous ways and in varying levels of health concern. Pb, Sn, and Zn had geoaccumulation values > 2 (moderate to heavy pollutants) in street sediment samples. Cr had a geoaccumulation value > 1, while Ni, W, Fe and Mn had geoaccumulation values between 1 and 0 in street sediment. Street sediment contamination factors for respective elements are Zn (10.41), Sn (5.45), Pb (4.70), Sb (3.45), Cr (3.19), W (2.59), and Mn (2.43). The notable elements with the highest factors for ball fields are Zn (1.72), Pb (1.36), Cr (0.99), V (0.95), and Mn (1.00). High correlation coefficients of known constituents of steel, such as Fe and Mo, Ni and Cr, W and Co, W and V, as well as particulate steel and coal spherule fragments found by SEM suggest probable sourcing of some of the metals from the AK Steel facility directly adjacent to the park. However, overall extensive heterogeneity of metal pollutants in the area points to the difficulties in sourcing pollutant metals, with many outside sources likely contributing as well. This study demonstrates that different sediment media can be impacted by significantly different metal pollutants even when in very close proximity to a single source and points to unrecognized complexity in urban pollution processes in the region. This study pertains to large-scale regional importance, as Middletown, Ohio is indicative of a typical post-industrial Midwestern U.S. city where limited investigation has been conducted regarding urban pollution and sourcing of materials.

Bahr, Colter Mitchell, Alison Walker, Kristen SucherAbstract:This article treats aspects of family life for which there are comparable data from students at three or more points over the 75-year period 1924–1999, beginning with the 1924 Middletown high school surveys and drawing on the replications of 1977, 1989, and 1999. We reassess the Lynds' positioning of families in a trajectory of space and time that emphasized family decentering or dis-integration, and that assumed that technological changes extending a family's circulation in time and space reduced family solidarity. Although national data suggest that some family decline has indeed occurred since the 1970s, among Middletown students last surveyed in 1999 there is quite remarkable stability in several of the Lynds' indicators. Trends in topics of parent-child disagreement and students' perceptions of ideal parental traits suggest that family change does not necessarily mean family decline, and trends in emotional solidarity with parents, beginning in 1977, yield no evidence of decline. The Lynds assumed a linear, additive relation between family decline and nonfamily space/time utilization. We argue that their space/time indicators are problematic as correlates of family solidarity and suggest alternative measures. Students of 1999 reported spending less time with parents than did their predecessors, but their identification with and perceived closeness to parents was not lower than in earlier decades. At century's end, Middletown students seemed insulated from the widely reported national trend toward “rapidly loosening family bonds,” and continuity rather than family decline seemed the dominant trend. As parental time with children is significantly related to, but accounts for little of the variance in, children's emotional solidarity with parents, further work is needed on predictors of emotional solidarity in families.
