These challenges include among other things, operating in contested environments, low bandwidth Communications links, unpredictable topological changes, and the need for special priority and security level considerations. In the face of these challenges, there is a need to leverage and build upon the explosive information technology advances being made in the commercial markets. This Feature Topic explores an interesting and important cross-section of topics along these lines, spanning Communications layers from physical, through networking and higher layer IT services.

This is done to achieve more centralized control and standardized interfaces. This is useful for Military networks and is addressed in two articles in this Feature Topic on Military Communications The article by Wrona et al. gives an introduction to a variation of attribute-based access control, developed by the NATO Communications and Information Agency, referred to as content-based protection and release (CPR). The majority of the article then goes on to consider cross-layer enforcement of CPR policies in SDN, including a proof-ofconcept implementation. The topic of content-based security is highly relevant and likely of interest to many readers.

IEEE Communications Magazine, 1992Co-Authors: J.a. BrendlerAbstract:The evolution of Army tactical Communications systems, starting with the formation of the Signal Corps in 1856, is outlined. The use of mobile subscriber equipment (MSE), the single channel ground and airborne radio system (SINCGARS), and the maneuver control system (MCS), among others, to support American troops in Operation Desert Storm is described, and a representative sample of signal unit employment is presented. The fundamental goals of near-term efforts at the Army Signal Center to complete the planned Army tactical command and control (ATCCS) architecture, to enhance the integration of the systems composing that architecture, to prepare for and maintain compatibility with developments in the strategic environment, sustaining base, and tactical user community are discussed.
