Model Tests on an Integration Method of Collision Avoidance and Radio Communication Systems with Helmet-Mounted Imaging Systems in Order to Increase Safety of Air Transport Systems
Development of Transport by Telematics, 2019Co-Authors: Andrzej Szelmanowski, Andrzej Pazur, Krzysztof SajdaAbstract:Modern integrated avionic systems include, among others, helmet-mounted data presentation systems, the main objective of which is to improve situational and tactical awareness of a pilot on the modern battlefield. A completely new issue related to the helmet-mounted data imaging is the use of imaging the information obtained from collision avoidance and radio communication systems. The electronic (computer) integration of individual devices forming an integrated avionic system uses digital data buses, in which information (including alarm signals, radio operating parameters, voice commands) can be provided directly “in front of the pilot’s eyes” in the helmet-mounted imaging systems. The paper presents the results of the model tests, within the framework of the reliability of information obtained from the selected collision avoidance and radio communication systems, carried out in the Air Force Institute of Technology. It also discusses the selected methods and systems applied in order to support the pilot in terms of warning of a collision risk situation (monitor imaging) and the selected analysis results of the probability of the aircraft collision in the controlled airspace. The SWPL-1 Cyklop helmet-mounted flight parameter display system (constructed in the Avionics Division of Air Force Institute of Technology) and proposals of imaging the selected parameters from the collision avoidance and radio communication systems on Military Helicopters of the Polish Armed Forces were presented.

Particular attention has been paid to the so-called integration station (built under the Mi-8, Mi-17, Mi-24 upgrade project), i.e. the laboratory equipment to optimise and unify communication systems integrated on the basis of digital data buses (following the MIL-1553B standard, among other ones). Such equipment has allowed AFIT to integrate new communication devices/systems while upgrading the W-3PL helicopter. Some selected tasks performed with this equipment engaged have been discussed. Also, problems arising while actuating and testing the developed software to integrate communication devices/systems (including digitally controlled radio stations of the RRC, HARRIS, and MR6000 types, communication control panels of the PSŁ-1 type and multifunction displays of the MW-1 type) have been given consideration in the scope of the software functionality and reliability. Presented are also additional monitoring and measuring systems used to test this software, just to mention the M230 rugged laptop computer used to diagnose the system and prepare plans of the radio communication.

Mechanism for Adjustment of the Companies Innovative Activity Control Indicators to Their Strategic Development Goals

During the research, a hypothesis was put forward stating that the current company management mechanisms do not fully realize innovation development potential to achieve strategic outcomes. On the basis of the activity analysis of the largest Russian companies, it was estimated that innovation development indicators are not always aimed at achieving strategic outcomes. The identified problem hinders development of companies in the current context. For this reason, in order to solve it, the mechanism for the adjustment of innovative development indicators to the company strategic guidelines has been worked out. Its design was based on the groundwork of the demand to necessarily provide increasing payoff from innovative activity. To implement it, a certain procedure was suggested for maintaining the ratio between individual indicators of the company innovative activity efficiency and its strategic development indicators, reflected in the devised dynamical model. The proposals we suggested on forming the mechanism for control indicators adjustment were brought to the level of methodological support of investigated process. Experimental approbation of the devised approach was done from the perspective of functionality of the leading companies in the world market of civilian and Military Helicopters, including Textron (Bell Helicopters), Airbus (Helicopters), Leonardo, Sikorsky, Boeing, and Russian Helicopters. The possibility of practical application of the devised mechanism for indicators adjustment was demonstrated with regard to handling of applied problems of developing the helicopter manufacturing company Russian Helicopters, aimed at improving its competitiveness in the world market. Results of the conducted research, first, broaden scientific perceptions of the innovation impact on the achievement of strategic outcomes of the companies activity; second, contain methodological support for devising and further functioning of the mechanism for adjustment of innovative activity indicators to achieve the company strategic development benchmarks at the account of secured increasing payoff from innovative activity; third, represent practical interest from the point of handling applied problems of national companies development in various branches and fields, first of all those from developing countries, and so can be used by them when working out strategic and program documents for improving competitiveness in the global economic space.

A methodology for analyzing vibration data from planetary gear systems using complex Morlet wavelets

VachtsevanosAbstract:Planetary gear trains are complex flight critical components of Helicopters and other aircraft. Failure modes on such components may lead to loss of life and/or aircraft. It is essential, therefore, that incipient failures or faults be detected and isolated as early as possible and corrective action be taken in order to avoid catastrophic events. Research thus far has focused on gear teeth faults and available methods could not detect a crack in the planetary gear plate under all operating conditions. A wavelet domain methodology is suggested for the analysis and feature extraction of the vibration data from the planetary gear system of Military Helicopters. Complex Morlet wavelets are employed and the time domain knowledge, preserved by the wavelet decomposition, is used to extract useful features that distinguish between faulted and healthy gear plates from experimental data made available from both on-aircraft and test cell experiments. A statistical method based on the z-test is also suggested to evaluate the relative performance of these features.
