    Abstract:

    Background: Regular Milk Consumption during childhood and adolescence is recommended for bone health. However, Milk Consumption increases circulating insulin-like growth factor I concentrations, and may also accelerate puberty. Objective: We prospectively investigated the association between Milk Consumption and age at menarche in the Growing Up Today Study. Methods: Study participants were 5583 US girls who were premenarcheal and ages 9–14 y in 1996. Girls were followed through 2001, at which time 97% of noncensored participants had reported menarche. Frequency of Milk and meat Consumption was calculated with the use of annual youth/adolescent food frequency questionnaires from 1996–1998. Intake of related nutrients was also measured. Age at menarche was self-reported annually through 2001. Results: During follow-up, 5227 girls attained menarche over 10,555 accrued person-years. In models adjusted for dietary and sociodemographic predictors of menarche, frequency of Milk Consumption did not predict age at onset of menarche (for >3 glasses of Milk/d vs. 1.1–4 glasses/wk, HR: 0.93; 95% CI: 0.83, 1.04). After additional adjustment for body size, premenarcheal girls consuming >3 glasses of Milk daily were 13% less likely (95% CI: 23%, 223%; P-trend: <0.01) to attain menarche in the next month relative to those consuming 1.1–4 glasses/wk. Neither total meat nor red meat Consumption was associated with age at menarche. Conclusions: Ourfindings suggest that regularConsumption of Milk in girls aged$9 y is unlikelyto substantially affect age at onset of menarche.     Abstract:

    Importance Milk Consumption during adolescence is recommended to promote peak bone mass and thereby reduce fracture risk in later life. However, its role in hip fracture prevention is not established and high Consumption may adversely influence risk by increasing height. Objectives To determine whether Milk Consumption during teenage years influences risk of hip fracture in older adults and to investigate the role of attained height in this association. Design, Setting, and Participants Prospective cohort study over 22 years of follow-up in more than 96 000 white postmenopausal women from the Nurses’ Health Study and men aged 50 years and older from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study in the United States. Exposures Frequency of Consumption of Milk and other foods during ages 13 to 18 years and attained height were reported at baseline. Current diet, weight, smoking, physical activity, medication use, and other risk factors for hip fractures were reported on biennial questionnaires. Main Outcomes and Measures Cox proportional hazards models were used to calculate relative risks (RRs) of first incidence of hip fracture from low-trauma events per glass (8 fl oz or 240 mL) of Milk consumed per day during teenage years. Results During follow-up, 1226 hip fractures were identified in women and 490 in men. After controlling for known risk factors and current Milk Consumption, each additional glass of Milk per day during teenage years was associated with a significant 9% higher risk of hip fracture in men (RR = 1.09; 95% CI, 1.01-1.17). The association was attenuated when height was added to the model (RR = 1.06; 95% CI, 0.98-1.14). Teenage Milk Consumption was not associated with hip fractures in women (RR = 1.00 per glass per day; 95% CI, 0.95-1.05). Conclusions and Relevance Greater Milk Consumption during teenage years was not associated with a lower risk of hip fracture in older adults. The positive association observed in men was partially mediated through attained height.

    Abstract:

    Raw Milk has frequently been identified as the source of foodborne illness outbreaks; however, the number of illnesses ascertained as part of documented outbreaks likely represents a small proportion of the actual number of illnesses associated with this food product. Analysis of routine surveillance data involving illnesses caused by enteric pathogens that were reportable in Minnesota during 2001–2010 revealed that 3.7% of patients with sporadic, domestically acquired enteric infections had reported raw Milk Consumption during their exposure period. Children were disproportionately affected, and 76% of those <5 years of age were served raw Milk from their own or a relative’s farm. Severe illness was noted, including hemolytic uremic syndrome among 21% of Escherichia coli O157–infected patients reporting raw Milk Consumption, and 1 death was reported. Raw Milk consumers, potential consumers, and policy makers who might consider relaxing regulations regarding raw Milk sales should be educated regarding illnesses associated with raw Milk Consumption.

    Abstract:

    Results from epidemiological studies of Milk Consumption and mortality are inconsistent. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies assessing the association of non-fermented and fermented Milk Consumption with mortality from all causes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. PubMed was searched until August 2015. A two-stage, random-effects, dose-response meta-analysis was used to combine study-specific results. Heterogeneity among studies was assessed with the I2 statistic. During follow-up periods ranging from 4.1 to 25 years, 70,743 deaths occurred among 367,505 participants. The range of non-fermented and fermented Milk Consumption and the shape of the associations between Milk Consumption and mortality differed considerably between studies. There was substantial heterogeneity among studies of non-fermented Milk Consumption in relation to mortality from all causes (12 studies; I2 = 94%), cardiovascular disease (five studies; I2 = 93%), and cancer (four studies; I2 = 75%) as well as among studies of fermented Milk Consumption and all-cause mortality (seven studies; I2 = 88%). Thus, estimating pooled hazard ratios was not appropriate. Heterogeneity among studies was observed in most subgroups defined by sex, country, and study quality. In conclusion, we observed no consistent association between Milk Consumption and all-cause or cause-specific mortality.

    Abstract:

    Prostate cancer has become the most common cancer among men in the United States. Although Milk Consumption is considered to be a risk factor in some epidemiological studies, the results are inconsistent. A meta-analysis method was conducted to estimate the combined odds ratio (OR) between Milk Consumption and prostate cancer from case-control studies published between 1984 and 2003 using commercial software (comprehensive meta-analysis). The combined OR was 1.68 (95% confidence interval = 1.34-2.12) in the 11 published case-control studies. The combined OR varied little by study stratification. Additionally, we evaluated the possible risk factors in Milk for prostate cancer. In conclusion, we found a positive association between Milk Consumption and prostate cancer. The underlying mechanisms, including fat, calcium, hormones, and other factors, should be investigated further.

    In surveys conducted by Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS), such as SUSENAS, many households do not allocate expenditures for certain types of consumer goods. This causes a lot of censored data. An example of such expenditure is spending on Milk Consumption. Previous studies that analyzed household expenditure for Milk Consumption were conducted using the Bayesian Tobit Quantile (BTQ) model. However, the research has not been able to include household income variable that is not linear. This raises the assumption that the variable is endogenous. If the endogenous variable is used in BTQ model, the result of parameter estimation will be biased. Thus, an alternative model that can accommodate the endogenous variables is required. Based on the descriptions, this research used Endogenous Bayesian Tobit Quantile (BTQ) model. The variables used are household expenditures for Milk Consumption as the censored response variable, household income as the endogenous variable, household head education, percentage of household expenditure for food, numbers of household member, percentage of household member aged ≤ 12 years, average of per capita expenditure, and percentage of working household member as the exogenous variables, and working hours of household head as the instrumantal variable. Furthermore, Endogenous BTQ models for household expenditure data for Milk Consumption are compared with both Tobit Quantile (TQ) and BTQ models using RMSE and the result is Endogenous BTQ models perform better when endogenous problems arise. In addition, it was found that from the data, significant endogeneity was found on the left side of 0.55-th quantile and on the right side of 0.80-th quantile. It's also found that in the lower quantiles, the percentage of household expenditure on food does not significantly affect household expenditure for Milk Consumption.
