Reflexive Mimesis in contemporary visual culture
Emotion Space and Society, 2011Co-Authors: Elizabeth WaldenAbstract:Abstract A significant strand of new work in visual culture shows figures expressing extreme emotion. Such produces an experience of what I call “reflexive Mimesis.” Modernism eschewed Mimesis in favor of reflexivity; mass culture largely took over the role of producing mimetic experience for its audience. “Reflexive Mimesis” represents an alternative that does not seek to deny or interrupt our mimetic capacity; indeed I argue that such work explores Mimesis as a technique for experiencing ourselves as “mimetic animals.” However, this work is reflexive, not ideological. Among the artists considered in this chapter are Bill Viola, Chloe Piene, Paul Pfeiffer, Sam Taylor-Wood and Andy Warhol.

Mimesis embodiment and proto-symbol acquisition for humanoids
2001 IEEE ASME International Conference on Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics. Proceedings (Cat. No.01TH8556), 2001Co-Authors: Tetsunari Inamura, Yoshihiko Nakamura, Iwaki Toshima, Hideaki EzakiAbstract:Mimesis is the primitive skill of imitative learning, one of the methods for recognition of others' behavior and construction of self behavior. Mimesis is thought an origin of human intelligence because this function is observed not only at humans but also at animals. When the Mimesis is adopted as learning method for humanoids, designing full body behavior becomes easier because bottom-up learning approaches from robot side are combined with top-down teaching approaches from user side involved each other. Therefore, we have developed a behavior acquisition and understanding system for humanoid robots based on Mimesis. This system is able to abstract observed others' behaviors into conceptual symbols, to recognize others' behavior using proto-symbols, and to generate self motion patterns using the proto-symbols. In this paper, we mention the integration of Mimesis loop, and confirmation of the feasibility on virtual humanoids.

La calidad de la Educación Superior en Colombia: algunas prácticas estratégicas de evasión / The quality of higher education in Colombia: some strategic evasion practices
'Universidad Nacional de La Pampa', 2020Co-Authors: Toscano López, Daniel GihovaniAbstract:In Colombia, some universities, under the hard and bloody struggle not to disappear, and which I have called "pseudo emerging", for their "no-power-more power", have incorporated strategic practices into their repertoire of evasion to look at, not only to obtaining quality certification, but also to the acquisition of income and profit: camouflage, yeast effect, Mimesis and hyperactivity. These four evasion practices are not given continuously or established in a hierarchical order. Rather, they juxtapose each other until they form a crammed network of information and data where utility becomes an educational measure.

Mimesis: Where play and narrative meet
Cognitive Development, 2005Co-Authors: Carol Fleisher FeldmanAbstract:Abstract There is a great deal of narrative in play and also of play in narrative, especially in the narrative and play of young children. Part of the reason for this may be that they share an important pattern or structure in the way they work as mental instruments, Mimesis . Mimesis is a mode of representation in which the relation between the symbol that represents and the thing in the world that is represented is in some sense imitative; that is, the representation resembles the thing represented. The concept of Mimesis is not precise, but it has two important, though not entirely distinct, strands which are based on two kinds of imitation: the imitation found in the indexical symbol, or sign, and the imitation that is found in literary representation. The general notion of imitation that these two strands share is somewhat elusive, but it seems clear that both play and narrative would share equally in it. Further consequences are discussed.
