Six new species are proposed (M. tayrona Silveira sp. nov.; M. anchicaya Silveira sp. nov.; M. caxiuana Silveira sp. nov.; M. verissimoi Silveira sp. nov.; M. rodriguesi Silveira sp. nov.; M. ryani Silveira sp. nov.), raising to nine the number of species in the M. punctatus group. The highest diversity of the group concentrates in northern South America, in Andean areas and Amazonia. New information concerning the very peculiar nests of these wasps is also given.

They build nests without envelopes, making it easier to take notes and follow the growth of the nest, allowing the observation of oviposition, development of the eggs, larvae and pupae, as well as the addition of new cells to the nest and hierarchical conflicts among adults. Mischocyttarus cerberus styx Richards and Mischocyttarus cassununga Von Ihering are representatives of a genus and tribe that occur only in the Americas and these species happen to occur in the municipality of Rio Claro (SP). The present work aimed to follow the development of colonies in order to develop a comparative approach of factors that interact with the colony cycle, to verify if the species show similar or diverse profiles from each other. Four locations were chosen to represent the sampling at the Universidade Estadual Paulista campus of Rio Claro, SP. Data collection ranged from April 2014 to April 2015. M. cerberus styx showed a more irregular profile of productivity along the four seasons, presenting in general the greatest values on summer and the lowest values on winter. M. cassununga , on the other hand, seemed to have a more stable rhythm of productivity, with less discrepancy between seasons, demonstrating a better performance concerning cold seasons, with the greatest productivity values on spring and the lowest values on fall. Both species showed a similar pattern of immature development with the shortest period corresponding to summer and the longest period corresponding to winter. Mischocyttarus e um genero de vespas eussociais pertencentes a subfamilia Polistinae. Elas constroem ninhos sem envelopes, tornando-os mais facilmente observaveis e favorecendo o acompanhamento do crescimento do ninho, permitindo a observacao de oviposicao, desenvolvimento dos ovos, larvas e pupas, assim como a adicao de novas celulas ao ninho e interacoes entre adultos. Mischocyttarus cerberus styx Richards (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Mischocyttarini) e Mischocyttarus cassununga Von Ihering (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Mischocyttarini) sao representantes do genero e tribo que ocorrem apenas nas americas, ocorrendo concomitantemente no municipio de Rio Claro (SP). O presente trabalho objetivou o acompanhamento do desenvolvimento colonial para elaborar uma abordagem comparativa de fatores que interagem com o ciclo colonial, a fim de verificar se as especies apresentam perfil similar ou diverso entre si. Quatro locais foram escolhidos para representar a amostragem no campus da Universidade Estadual Paulista de Rio Claro, SP. O periodo de coleta de dados abrangeu abril de 2014 ate abril de 2015, com os mapeamentos das colonias selecionadas na frequencia de tres vezes por semana, atraves do auxilio de escadas de diferentes alturas. M. cerberus apresentou um perfil mais irregular de produtividade conforme as estacoes, apresentando geralmente valores maiores no verao e os menores no inverno. M. cassununga por outro lado, apresentou um ritmo de produtividade mais estavel, com menor discrepância entre as estacoes e melhor desempenho em periodos frios. Ambas as especies demonstraram padrao similar no desenvolvimento de imaturos, sendo mais rapido no verao e mais longo no inverno.

In basal (primitively) eusocial wasps, the role of cuticular hydrocarbons in the colonial recognition has been extensively studied in genus Polistes (Polistinae) and Stenogastrinae. Although the genus Mischocyttarus (Polistinae) is a large group of neotropical eusocial wasps, the cuticular hydrocarbons were only investigated in a few species. This study aimed to verify whether the cuticular hydrocarbons can discriminate the intercolonial identity in Mischocyttarus cassununga . Our results showed that the cuticular hydrocarbons can play a role in intercolony recognition.

The present study aimed at describing how tasks are assigned among the members of colonies of Mischocyttarus cassununga (Von Ihering) during the post-emergence phase. For this, we daily tape recorded the behavioral repertoire of thirteen colonies in the field, later analyzing the results of each colonial subphase with Statistic analysis (Principal Component Analysis, Clustering Analysis and ANOVA - Tukey-Kramer t-test p<0.05). Our results showed that the assignment of tasks in M. cassununga generally reflects the dominance hierarchy. Despite of the behavioral flexibility of basal eusocial wasps, it was possible to identify different groups of subordinate females (workers) in the colony. The division of labor during the pre-male subphase was delineated with four defined groups whereas the post-male subphase with three groups. Pre-male: G1 - a dominant group of reproductive females, G2 - a group of higher hierarchically subordinate females (these can sometimes perform tasks very similar to the queens), G3 - a subordinate group of forager females, and G4 - a subordinate group of inactive and principally young wasps. Post-male: G1, G2 and G3 (similar groups during pre-male subphase, but without G4. We think these analyses suggest a novel view of the importance of the behavioral repertoire of higher hierarchically subordinate females in wasp nests, at least in the genus Mischocyttarus .

The present work aimed at the factors involved in the social organization of colonies of Mischocyttarus (Monocyttarus) cassununga, during the post-emergence phase. Our results show that females at the top hierarchical positions are the most aggressive individuals in the colonies, sitting at the front of the comb, and that this stabilizes the social hierarchy. Actual violent competition for hierarchical positions was not observed, and the position of the queen was never challenged, the queen being relatively long-lived and active in socially controlling all the observed colonies. Therefore, we conclude that there are three main factors regulating social organization in this species: queen longevity, a stable linear hierarchy, and the constant control of the queen over the social organization of the colony.

The present study was conducted to investigate how the process of replacement of the queen during the colonial cycle of Mischocyttarus cassununga takes place, and which are the determinant factors for its success. Our results showed that there are no disputes (fights) for hierarchical positions among other females after the disappearance of the queen. However, there is an increase on the overall frequency of aggressions, because of the efforts of the new queen (ex-2 nd ranked female) in assuming control of the colony and affirming its reproductive dominance. Moreover, we recorded no alterations on the occupants of the hierarchical positions under the queen after its replacement, even in consecutive replacements in the same colony. We think that the climatic conditions, longevity of the queen, and the duration of the colonial cycle may be determinant during this process.

The distribution pattern of comb cells presented by Mischocyttarus mirificus (Zikan, 1935) is vertical with a single cell of width, resulting in a filiform shape that camouflages in the middle of the substrate. There are few studies regarding this architectural pattern for social wasps and their role in camouflage, and this study aims to detail the nesting habits of this species. In total, 40 colonies were analyzed in their natural habitat and six were dissected in the laboratory. Aspects about the construction of the nests and nesting environment have been described. A test was carried out with nest photographs, to quantify their camouflage percentage within the nesting substrate. The colonies were found mainly in riparian forests where there were elements in the environment that favored their camouflage. According to the nest photograph analysis, their camouflage levels can vary according to the position from which the photograph is taken. It is evident that M. mirificus founders select sites where they can camouflage their colonies, and this gives them advantages in exploring a new environment.

This study describes the occurrence of honey storage in colonies of the neotropical independently-founding wasp Mischocyttarus socialis. During August 2016, in the dry season, 15 colonies in the post-emergence phase were recorded at the botanical garden of Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora in southwestern of Brazil. Five of the colonies showed honey stored inside empty and immature (eggs) cells. The presence of these two patterns for this species suggests that the storage behavior can be a short-term strategy to feed larvae as soon as they emerge and also a long-term storage to complement population diet during food shortages.

New Records of Social Wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) in the Brazilian Tropical Savanna by

Here we report the first records for eight species of social wasps in Minas Gerais state: Mischocyttarus araujoi Zikán, M. funerulus Zikán, M. tricolor Richards, M. confusus Zikán, M. cerberus styx Richards, M. artifex (Ducke), Polistes pacificus flavopictus Ducke and Polybia striata (Fabricius). These species occurred in tropical savanna and semi deciduous forest. Key words: Mischocyttarus spp., Polistes sp., Polybia sp., inventory, diver-sity. In a recent perspective, biodiversity should be viewed and evaluated not only in terms of numbers of species, but also in aspects of interactions and species distribution, to facilitate a better preservation of natural ecosystems (Del-Claro 2004). Among the compounds involved in this process, cuticular hydrocarbons are considered the main signals for nestmate recognition, caste differentiation, and fertility communication. The aims of this study were to describe the cuticular chemical compounds of the species Mischocyttarus consimilis, Mischocyttarus bertonii, and Mischocyttarus latior, and to test whether these chemical compounds could be used to evaluate differences and similarities between Mischocyttarus species, using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Workers from these three species presented a variety of hydrocarbons ranging from C17 to C37, and among the compounds identified, the most representative were branched alkanes, linear alkanes and alkenes. The results revealed quantitative and qualitative differences among the hydrocarbon profiles, as confirmed by discriminant analysis. This study supports the hypothesis that cuticular chemical profiles can be used as parameters to identify interspecific and intercolony differences in Mischocyttarus, highlighting the importance of these compounds for differentiation of species and populations.

Sociobiology, 2016Co-Authors: Thiago S Montagna, William Fernando AntoniallijuniorAbstract:Phenotypic divergence plays an important role in establishment of the reproductive division of labor among castes in social insects; however, little is known about this subject in independent-founding polistine wasps. In this study, we investigated morphological differences among foundresses from associative and solitary foundations, as well as among females produced in different phases of the colony cycle in Mischocyttarus consimilis Zikan. Our results showed that the alpha foundress had significantly greater body size than auxiliary foundresses, although it did not differ in size from solitary foundresses. In addition, the alpha foundress had greater ovarian development than their auxiliary and solitary foundresses. We also demonstrated that gynes were significantly larger than workers. These results therefore suggest that the phenotype of females emerging in colonies M. consimilis can vary with the progress of the colony cycle, and that body size and ovarian condition are closely linked to the function performed by the foundress.

However, little is known about the mechanisms controlling caste determination in eusocial wasps. Evidence suggests that the phenotype of queens in independent-founding (IF) eusocial wasps of the subfamily Polistinae can be partly fixed in the larval stage; however, this hypothesis has not yet been investigated. In this study we evaluate whether juvenile hormone (JH) affects pre-imaginal caste determination in the IF eusocial wasp Mischocyttarus consimilis (Hymenoptera: Vespidae). Analyzing morphometric and behavioral data, we demonstrated experimentally that females emerging from larvae that were treated with JH in the third instar had a significantly larger body size, spent more time in the nest, and were subject to less physical aggression from nestmates compared with females emerging from untreated control larvae. These results indicate that phenotype differences among castes in IF eusocial wasps can be partly fixed in the pre-adult stage and influenced by variations in the JH titer.

The capacity for individual recognition in social insects is mediated by chemical signals that are acquired soon after the adult emerges, and vary according to the tasks performed by individuals in their colonies. We determined the time when adults of the wasp Mischocyttarus consimilis acquire the chemical signature of their colonies, as well as the variation in the cuticular hydrocarbon profiles of the exoskeleton of individuals, according to their functions in the colony. The method used was Fourier transform infrared photoacoustic spectroscopy directly on the gaster of each individual. Young wasps take three to four days to acquire the colony's chemical signature, with a small change on the fifth day, when the cuticular hydrocarbon profile of the workers is more similar to that of the queens than that of the males, probably because they are of the same sex, but primarily because of the similarity of tasks executed by these two groups of females in the colonies.

Parasitismo de colonias da vespa social Mischocyttarus cerberus Ducke, 1918 por femeas de Mischocyttarus consimilis Zikan, 1949 foram registrados em uma area rural no municipio de Dourados estado de Mato Grosso do Sul no Brasil. Em todos os casos monitorados a invasao ocorreu na fase colonial de pre-emergencia, e em geral foi executado por uma unica femea de M. consimilis. O periodo de estabelecimento da femea estrangeira na colonia hospedeira foi marcado por comportamentos antagonicos entre as femeas interespecificas. Em geral, a arquitetura do ninho parasitado foi modificada em relacao a arquitetura tipica do ninho da especie hospedeira.

There were 23 behavioral acts registered divided into five categories. Both dominant females as the workers showed a behavioral repertoire of 23 items, while males only 15. Dominants remain longer on the nest than subordinates and exercise exclusively the behavior of oviposition and rubbing gaster on the nest and share 21 behaviors with the workers. Males foraged nectar, preys and water, and exercise other behaviors, mostly related to social activity. All behaviors can be performed by any potentially worker at any age.

The objectives of the present study were to describe the immature stages of M. latior , determine the development time of the immature stages and determine which factors affect its duration. Daily mappings were performed from March 1994 to August 1995 in 22 nests . Two nests were also collected and dissected to characterize immatures. Larvae presented five instars and unlike most Mischocyttarus , M. latior has only a single lobe on the abdominal sternite, which is vestigial in third instar, emergent in fourth instar and fully developed in the fifth instar larvae. The mean duration of the immature stages (from egg laying to adult emergence), was 67.38 ± 9.41 days, a longer period than the total duration of the immature stages of other previously studied species. The development time of the immatures was variable, depending on the colony development stage, with development times being quicker in pre-emergence colonies.

This behavior is one of the first actions exhibited by the foragers when they arrive in the colonies. Regarding nectar and prey collection, 95.90% of the collected nectar was given to larvae, whereas 3.57% to dominant individuals and 95.94% of the collected prey were given to the larvae, 2.54% to the dominant members, while the remainder of both was given to the workers. Despite not being significant, it was possible to observe a difference in food distribution among larvae, with larger larvae receiving more food than others. When the forager returns to the nest with pulp, it adds this material to cells in 64.29% of the times. Males showed agitated behavior with the arrival of the foragers, and sometimes took the foraged material from them.

Colony Defense Behavior of the Primitively Eusocial Wasp, Mischocyttarus cerberus is Related to Age
Journal of insect science (Online), 2010Co-Authors: Olga Coutinho Togni, Edilberto GiannottiAbstract:The colony defense behavior of the wasp Mischocyttarus cerberus Richards (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) was studied to verify whether there were different reactions of wasps of different ages and hierarchical positions during attacks of ants. Detailed nest mapping was first performed, then the wasps were marked and were divided in four distinct categories: queens, older workers, younger workers and males. Tests were made simulating attacks of ants in the nests. The main results showed that the M. cerberus behaviors against ant attacks is more related to the age of the wasps than to their hierarchical position. The oldest wasps (queens and older workers) defend the nest more than the younger workers and males, representing a form of temporal polyethism.
