    Abstract:

    The family Moinidae (Crustacea: Cladocera) is intensively studied recently. Last genetic investigations revealed a huge diversity of species in the genus Moina Baird, 1850, comparable with the number of species in the genus Daphnia O.F. Muller, 1776. However, unlike daphniids, the taxonomy of moinids is understudied. Along with new still undescribed species, there are many inadequately described and illegitimately forgotten taxa within Moinidae. Moinids of tropical and subtropical regions remain especially poorly studied, and their features are ignored in recent intergeneric systems. Here we redescribe the morphology of M. wierzejskii Richard, 1895, a peculiar Moina from the New World, and discuss its position within the genus Moina s.l. In the taxonomic scheme, designed for European moinids, M. wierzejskii takes an intermediate position between subgenera Exomoina Hudec, 2010 and Moina s.str. Similarly to European species belonging to M. (Exomoina), females of M. wierzejskii have a modified Ilyocryptus-like labrum and an ephippium with two resting eggs. However, the males have no exopod on the thoracic limb I which suggests that this species is closer to the subgenus Moina s.str. The lack of exopod on male thoracic limb I was also marked in another species of the genus from the New World, M. hutchinsoni Brehm, 1937. To date such unusual combination of morphological features is unknown for any moinids from the Old World and Australia. We hope that our observations will stimulate deep phylogenetic studies of peculiar moinids inhabiting the New World.

    Abstract:

    A new species of Moina Baird, 1850 (Cladocera: Moinidae) is described based on material collected from Thailand (South-East Asia). In tropical Asia, Moina siamensis sp. nov. could be confused easily with M. weismanni Ishikawa, 1896, because of morphological similarities in parthenogenetic females and males of both species. The outstanding difference between these two taxa concerns the structure of the ephippium in gamogenetic females, which is highly visible under light and scanning electron microscopes. The mature ephippium of M. weismanni is strongly tuberous, with distinct borders between cells, whereas the ephippium of M. siamensis sp. nov. is significantly less tuberous, with prominent longitudinal lines in its central region. Since gamogenetic females only appear sporadically in moinid populations, distribution ranges of M. siamensis sp. nov., M. weismanni and sibling taxa must be clarified precisely using genetic markers in the future. Preliminary investigations of the ephippium structure may be useful for estimating the differences between populations, thus revealing much diversity within Moinidae.

  • Studies of the cladocera (Crustacea: branchiopoda) of Ethiopia: current state and further perspectives

    Abstract:

    The cladoceran fauna of Ethiopia (East Africa) was analyzed based on original sampling data, obtained during activity of the Joint Ethio-Russian Biological Expedition. In total, we found 63 species of Cladocera in Ethiopian water bodies: 26 species of Chydoridae, 18 species of Daphniidae, 6 of Moinidae, 5 of Macrothricidae, 5 of Sididae, 2 of Ilyocryptidae and 1 of Bosminidae. The highest cladoceran diversity (39 taxa) was marked in the mountainous Lake Tana; some of them are typical only for this lake. Diverse lakes, rivers and temporary pools have lower species diversity (24 taxa in total). Water bodies of Bale Mountains are characterized by significantly low cladoceran diversity and high proportion of endemic taxa which are still waiting for detailed description. In general, Ethiopia is inhabited by typical tropical cladocerans with broad distribution ranges, cosmopolitan, circumtropical and Afrotropical-Palearctic species, as well as endemic taxa for Africa and Ethiopian high mountains regions. A cladoceran collection created as a result of our work will be a base for future taxonomic and ecological studies in Ethiopia.     Abstract:

    : Species of the genus Moina Baird (Cladocera: Moinidae) often dominate freshwater crustacean communities in temporary water bodies. Several species of Moina are used as food for fish larvae in aquaculture, as bioindicators in toxicological studies, and as common subjects for physiological studies. The aim of this paper is to estimate biodiversity of Moina in northern Eurasia using the standard DNA barcoding approach based on the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. We analysed 160 newly obtained and 157 existing COI sequences, and found evidence for 21 phylogroups of Moina, some of which were detected here for the first time. Our study confirmed the opinion that the actual species diversity of cladocerans is several times higher than is presently accepted. Our results also indicated that Moina has the second richest species diversity among the cladoceran genera (with only Daphnia O. F. Mueller having a greater diversity of species). Our study strongly supports division of Moina into two faunistic groups: European-Western Siberian and Eastern Siberian-Far Eastern, with a transitional zone at the Yenisey River basin (Eastern Siberia). Here, we refrain from taxonomic descriptions of new species, as this requires a thorough morphological and taxonomic study for each putative taxon.

En condiciones de microcosmos, se mantuvieron experimentos pareados de dinámica poblacional de los cladóceros Moina micrura (Moinidae) y Ceriodaphnia dubia (Daphnidae), especializados en los recursos Chlorella sp. y Oocystis sp. (Chlorococcales) respectivamente y del generalista Daphnia ambigua (Daphnidae), durante 35 - 45 días. (Chlorococcales) respectively, and for the generalist species Daphnia ambigua (Daphnidae), during 35 - 45 days. While, the specialists M. micrura and C. dubia did not show evidences of competition, their presence lead to a significant decrease in the density of the generalist D. ambigua and in some cases even led to extinction.     There is some doubt concerning the lobes homology of the first trunk limb among cladoceran families. Notwithstanding, we believe that male claspers found in Cyclestherida and Cladocera are homologous and therefore derived from the endopodite. The present study employed the male claspers as markers to investigate homology among lobes of the trunk limb I. The comparison among members of different cladoceran taxa supported the traditional view that the inner (IDL) and outer distal (ODL) lobes found in Radopoda are homologous to, respectively, the fourth endite and exopodite present in Daphniidae, Moinidae, and Ctenopoda. For Bosminidae, whose endites are not individualized, it has been confirmed that their exopodite and the radopod ODL are homologous. The absence of claspers in Ilyocryptidae males does not permit any conclusion about them.     A rapid assessment survey identified 39 phytophilous cladocerans species from littoral zones of rivers, permanent and temporary lagoons, and swamps of the Parana River Valley, Goias, Brazil, 22 are registered for the first time in Central Brazil. Aspects of the taxonomy of some of these species are discussed. Cluster analysis (UPGMA) revealed two phytophilous cladoceran assemblages, characterized by higher or lower richness and relative abundance of species of the families Daphniidae and Moinidae (filter feeders), in comparison with the dominant families Chydoridae and Macrothricidae (scraper feeders).

    Australia harbors numerous peculiar organisms, but microscopic aquatic invertebrates remain scarcely studied here. Cladocera (Crustacea: Branchiopoda) is considered as one of the most important models for freshwater biogeography, but the lack of adequate species identifications devalues large-scale biogeographical conclusions. In this paper we redescribe morphology of rare and poorly known Moina australiensis Sars, 1896 based on material from its terra typica . Among Australian moinids, M. australiensis is similar to M. tenuicornis Sars, 1896. These two taxa reliably differ from each other in (1) proportions of the antenna I and (2) armature of the inner margin of valve. M. australiensis has a relatively short antenna I and setulae near ventral setae on inner side of the valve grouped into bunches. M. tenuicornis has an elongated antenna I and setulae on described region forming a uniform, continuous row. Presumably, distribution ranges of both species are restricted to Australia. Also, according to literature data, M. baylyi Forro, 1985, M. flexuosa Sars, 1896 and M. propinqua Sars, 1885 may be considered as peculiar Australian taxa. At the same time, M. micrura Kurz, 1875, M. aff. weismanni Ishikawa, 1896 and Moinodaphnia macleayi (King, 1853) have significantly broader distribution ranges. In fact, distribution ranges of all these taxa should be re-evaluated in the future based on careful identification of species in the original samples. In this sense, newly conducted morphological redescriptions of some rare and poorly known taxa are only first steps to evaluation of moinid biodiversity in Australia and in the global scale.

    Moina micrura is a kind of small-bodied water flea within the family Moinidae. Similar to Daphnia, M. micrura could also switch its reproduction mode from parthenogenetic female (PF) to sexual female (SF) to adapt to the external environment. To uncover the mechanisms of reproductive switching in M. micrura, we used both RNA-Seq and iTRAQ analyses to investigate the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and their protein products between SF and PF in M. micrura. A total of 1665 DEGs (702 up-regulated, 963 down-regulated) and 600 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) (102 up-regulated, 498 down-regulated) were detected in SF. Correlation analyses indicated that 31 genes were expressed significantly differentially at both transcriptomic and proteomic levels, including 15 up-regulated genes and 16 down-regulated genes in SF. Meanwhile, our data also showed that 528 DEPs have discordant expression at transcript level, implying post-transcriptional (including translational) regulation. These top up-regulated genes and their protein products in SF were mainly grouped into the globin-related family, vitellogenin-related family, cuticle-related family, Hsp-related family and methyltransferases-related family, which were all involved in the reproductive switching in Daphnia. In contrast, a cluster of orthologous groups revealed that up-regulated genes and their protein products in PF were strongly associated with the metabolic process, which may be responsible for rapid population proliferation in M. micrura.
