  • Moisture barrier properties of plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposited SiCxNy films on polyethylene naphthalate sheets and epoxy molding compound
    Surface and Coatings Technology, 2002
Co-Authors: Gisela Kaltenpoth, Walter Siebert, Frank Stubhan, Xuhong Wang, Le Luo
    Abstract:

Abstract Ternary Si–C–N films were produced in a radiofrequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition reactor applying the precursor gases silane, methane, and nitrogen or ammonia. The properties of the films to function as external Moisture barrier layers were investigated with emphasis on the correlation of deposition parameters and Moisture permeation rate. The Moisture Penetration through the films has been investigated in water vapor permeation experiments and capacitance measurements from humidity sensors in plastic packages. The Moisture resistance is mainly influenced by the stress in the films with best results for those samples exhibiting no or low compressive stress.

  • Acoustic emissions resulting from cyclic wetting of southern yellow pine
European Journal of Wood and Wood Products, 1992
    Co-Authors: R. W. Rice, Evan Peacock
    Abstract:

Acoustic emissions were measured during the swelling of southern yellow pine (Pinus sp.). The acoustic emissions are generated by swelling pressures which cause tissue movement and microfracturing within the samples during hydration. The samples were cycled through five wet/dry cycles and the acoustic emissions were measured during the wetting portion of the cycle. The level of acoustic emissions decreased exponentially with each cycle. Simultaneously, the estimated void volume within the samples increased slightly with each cycle. The results suggest that microfracturing is occurring within wood during swelling and increasing the void volume available for Moisture Penetration. The pattern indicates that the amount of microfracturing decreases with each cycle. The data also indicate that dimensional stability treatments for wood must effectively prevent Moisture Penetration of the microvoid areas within the wood.

  • Acoustic emissions resulting from cyclic wetting of southern yellow pine
Holz als Roh- und Werkstoff, 1992
    Co-Authors: R. W. Rice, Evan Peacock
    Abstract:

• Moisture content Penetration in wood elements under varying boundary conditions
    Wood Science and Technology, 2007
    Co-Authors: Martin Häglund
    Abstract:

Knowledge of effects of Moisture exposure on timber structures is important for serviceability and load bearing capacity of timber elements and systems. Varying climate affects the Moisture content profiles in timber as the relative humidity changes in the ambient air. This paper presents methods for calculation of diffusion based Moisture transport and corresponding results on how timber responds to varying Moisture with regard to Moisture Penetration and distribution. The calculations are based on measured outdoor relative humidity and temperature at different climatic locations in Sweden. No remarkably large deviations between the different climatic locations were found in general, which is positive in a design code perspective.
