    Abstract:

    In this study an attempt was made to look into intravenous blood transfusion. In this part of the country it is rarely performed, neither in the few veterinary teaching hospitals, nor in our local veterinary clinics. However, several clinical cases are regularly lost due to problems of anaemia, and several other situations of blood insufficiencies. Eighteen (18) adult stray Cats were used. Six as donors, six as recipients, and six as control receiving normal saline. Blood was collected from the jugular vein of Cats under sedation, and transferred to sedated recipients. Vital parameters (temperature, pulse, heart beat rate and respiratory rate.), packed cell volume (PCV) and clinical reactions to the infusions were observed. The PCV of the recipients increased between 5-10% while the temperature was seen to be increasing as the transfusion was taking place. There was an average increase of 6-10c. In the body temperature .clinical signs observed during the initial blood transfusion includes, salivation, urination, muscular tremors, vomiting, lacrimation, and bloat. While the signs were more severe after the repeat transfusion two weeks afterwards, indiCating serious transfusion reactions such as severe salivation, urination, muscular tremors, vomiting, lacrimation, mydriasis, lethargy, convulsions, facial oedema, opisthotonus and death. These experiments showed that blood transfusion in the local Mongrel Cats in northwest Nigeria can be performed to save the live of a Cat with problems of blood insufficiency. However, with some adverse reactions, a repeat blood transfusion is not recommended because it can come with attendant severe transfusion reactions, including death. The findings were discussed in the paper.

    Abstract:

    A biometrical study was conducted on some aspects of the reproductive system of 16 local breed Tom Cats ( Felis Catus domestica ) collected within Sokoto metropolis at different ages. The age of the Cats was estimated from teeth eruption and wearing and grouped into groups A to E as A (3­­- 6 months), B(6 months - 1 year), C(1- 1 1 / 2 year), D(1 1 / 2 -2 years) and E(2-4 years) respectively. Age difference was the major consideration factor during this study. The mean live weight of the tom Cats were 0.78 ± 0.02kg, 1.25  ± 0.0 7kg, 1.63 ±  0.06, 2.1±  0.06kg and 2.3 ±  0.08kg respectively. The percentage of the mean genitalia weight compared to the mean body weight in relation to their age showed a range of 0.5-1%. The mean weight, length and width of the testes were recorded with no significant difference between the right and left testis. The mean weight of the genitalia at an age of 3-6 months was 8.4±0.02g. The age at puberty of tom Cats was about 6months and the weight of the genitalia drastically increased with advancement in age from 8.88±0.07g at 6months-1year to 11.71±0.05g at above 4 years of age. The mean length and width of the penis were also recorded; the weights of the prostate gland were recorded with special consideration of their ages. The bulbourethral glands were present but hardly distinguishable grossly from the urethra both in length, width and in weight. It was concluded that the age of puberty of our domestic tom Cat in this area is 6months of age. It was recommended that a thorough investigation on the age related factor governing the development of anatomical features of the male reproductive tract of our domestic Cat. The findings were discussed in the paper.

    Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) is the term used to generalize a variety of conditions that cause inherited retinal dystrophy or retinal degeneration in animals. In Cats, hereditary eye diseases such as PRA are uncommon compared to their frequencies in dogs. The case to be reported is a Mongrel Cat, 11, who showed clinical signs very similar to Progressive Retinal Atrophy. The patient had also past history of intense treatment with antibiotics in the first year of life. The Toxic retinopathy induced by the use indiscriminate of enrofloxacin in Cats is one differential diagnoses for PRA. The reported case becomes atypical because the Retina Atrophy Progressive is a disease that, when it affects Cats, a fact rarer than in dogs, usually affects the Abssinio breed, Somali, Siamese and Persian. In this case, the patient is a Mongrel Cat. Although the patient's history isn't compatible with toxic retinopathy, this possibility isn't ruled out completely, even if the drug was given 10 years ago, because the final stages of the PRA the retinal changes are similar to intoxiCation for enrofloxacin . So, for the final confirmation of the diagnosis would be necessary to carry out a genetic test for identifiCation of the allele responsible for the disease.

    Pectus excavatum is a congenital deformity, characterized by a collapse in the caudal portion of the sternum which compromises organs from the thoracic cavity. A case is reported in a three months old Mongrel Cat diagnosed at Hospital Veterinario de la Universidad de Caldas in Manizales, Colombia. The animal lost sensibility in its hind legs and had muscular atrophy among other signs of neurological malfunction. Externally, it had an acute collapse of the sternum and the costal arch. The radiographic study of the thorax confirmed the sternum’s deformity and the thoracolumbar vertebrae damage. It was also useful to measure the frontal sagital and vertebral indexes. The results showed pectus excavatum and lordosis in vertebral bodies that caused neurological signs because of a medullar injury between the T 2 and L 4 segments. Given the severity of the disease, euthanasia was made to the Cat and the necropsy revealed a displacement of internal organs towards the caudal, irregular ribs and two big collapses in the sternum. The costal arch was deviated to the outside describing a bell form. The lungs had emphysema and hepatic type hemorrhages. This case is described because of its rare occurrence and, with the revision made, a contribution to itPectus excavatum es una deformidad congénita caracterizada por hundimiento en la porción caudal del esternón que compromete órganos de la cavidad torácica. Se reporta aquí un caso ocurrido en un gato mestizo de tres meses de edad diagnosticado en el Hospital Veterinario de la Universidad de Caldas en Manizales, Colombia. El animal presentó disminución de la sensibilidad en miembros posteriores, atrofia muscular y otros signos de disfunción neurológica. Externamente mostró marcada depresión del esternón y del arco costal. El estudio radiográfico del tórax confirmó la deformidad esternal, el daño de vértebras toracolumbares y permitió medir los índices frontosagital y vertebral. Los resultados indicaron Pectus excavatum y lordosis en cuerpos vertebrales que causaron signos neurológicos por lesión medular entre los segmentos T 2 y L 4 . Por la severidad de la enfermedad, se practicó la eutanasia, y la necropsia reveló desplazamiento de órganos torácicos hacia caudal, costillas irregulares y dos grandes depresiones en el esternón.     Background: Pemphigus foliaceus is an autoimmune skin disease whose the occurrence in feline clinic is uncommom. The etiology is unknown in most cases. Althought it is a rare condition in Cats, pemphigus foliaceus can be induced by drugs. It may affect both adult and old Cats with no sexual or racial predilection and diagnosis is based on animal historical, clinical examination and skin histopathology. Moreover, the treatment consists in immunosuppressive-based drugs. This paper describes a pemphigus foliaceus case in an eight-month-old kitten, probably due a cutaneous adverse drug reaction.Case: A 8-month-old, neutered male Mongrel Cat with crusted lesions loCated on face was examinated at the Veterinary Hospital. The owners reported that they had adopted the patient two months before the clinical presentation suggesting that this background was unknown. The Cat was treated in a local veterinary clinic with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory for rhinotracheitis and herpetic dermatitis on face due to the occurrence of sneezing and crusted pruriginous dermatitis. The kitten presented erosions, purulent exudation and crusts on pinnae, nasal and supra ocular areas, paronychia with purulent exudate and alopecia at distal portion of the tail. Supplementary exams such as skin scraping, cytology and fungal culture were performed to rule out other agents and confirm the diagnosis. The parasitological and fungal examination resulted negative despite the fact that cytological exam showed coccoid bacteria. Complete blood count and biochemical profile showed no alteration and the test for feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) resulted negative. Histological changes were consistent with intra-epidermal pustular subcorneal with acantholysis dermatitis. An immunosuppressive dose of prednisolona was prescribed for 15 days. After this time, the crusted lesions were substituted by alopecia areas. Every 20 days the corticosteroid dose was reduced by half and after 90 days, the patient showed repilation in all regions previously affected during 545 days whithout treatment.Discussion: Pemphigus foliaceus is usually an idiopathic disease but in some cases it may be induced by drugs and infectious or parasitic agents. Previous reports described that animals younger than 1 year-old and older than 17 year-old can be affected. However, the disease occurrence is rare in young Cats. The age of onset of symptoms was early considering that the literature describes 5 years of age as an average for the starting of the disease. Pemphigus foliaceus is considered a pustular disease. However, pustule is rarely reported in Cats in contrast with crusted lesions which are the most common clinical sign. The body regions affected were the same as reported in the literature with the addition of systemic signs as anorexia and lethargy. Fungal culture and parasitological examination should always be performed in Cats with clinical evidence to discharge other agents. Diagnosis is made by skin histopathology in which acantholytic cells are the main characteristic. The importance of the differential diagnosis and skin biopsy regardless of age enabled the diagnosis and therapeutic success. It is suggested that Pemphigus foliaceus was of pharmacodermic etiology because of the age of the patient, a history of administration of unknown antimicrobial mediCation and the lack of recurrence of clinical manifestations after 545 days of the end of glucocorticoid treatmen
