Electrochemical monitoring methods were employed for testing different concentrations of the leaf extract admixed in duplicated specimens of steel-reinforced concrete slabs immersed in the acidic test-system. Statistical analyses as per ASTM G16-95 R04 of the experimental results showed that effectiveness of Morinda lucida at inhibiting concrete steel-rebar corrosion increased with the concentration of the admixture. 0.4167% Morinda lucida, per weight of cement, was identified with optimum inhibition efficiency η = 98.78±0.34% followed in effectiveness by 0.3333% Morinda lucida with η = 93.20±1.76% at inhibiting steel-rebar corrosion in the corrosive test-environment.

Electrochemical monitoring techniques and compressive-strength testing were employed for different concentrations of the leaf- extract admixture in duplicates of steel-reinforced concrete specimens, partially immersed in the corrosive-medium. Analyses of the experimental test-results according to specification ASTM G16-95 R04 showed that Morinda lucida leaf-extract combined highly-efficient corrosion inhibition, 84.82±7.76% ≤ η ≤ 95.64±1.50%, with good compressive-strength improvements in their admixed steel-reinforced concretes. These bear implications for corrosion-protection of wind-energy structures in saline/marine environments.

2015Co-Authors: Joshua Olusegun Okeniyi, Olubanke Olujoke Ogunlana, Taiwo Felicia Owoeye, Elizabeth Toyin OkeniyiAbstract:This paper employs atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and phytochemical screening methods for biochemical characterisation of the inorganic and organic constituents of the leaf of Morinda lucida. AAS results showed that this well-known medicinal-plant is high in iron (Fe = 5143.54 µg/g), low in cadmium (Cd = 2.9506 µg/g) and does not contain chromium (Cr). Also, Euclidean hit-list from the FT-IR instrument suggests Morinda lucida leaf-extract contains S-, N-, Br- and O- containing heteroatoms. The phytochemical analyses indicated presence of tannins, phlobatannins, saponins, flavonoids and terpenoids. These results bare prospects on suitability of leaf-extract from Morinda lucida for environmentally-friendly steel-rebar corrosion-protection in aggressive medium. Preliminary tests based on this showed that use of 0.083 wt% cement of Morinda lucida retarded steel-rebar total-corrosion and eventually reduced corrosion rate as admixture in duplicated 3.5% NaCl-immersed concretes, relative to control samples in the same medium.

Methods: Two groups of rats were treated with 400 mg/(kg·d) of Morinda lucida leaf extract for 4 and 13 weeks, respectively. The control rats received the vehicle. All the treated rats had corresponding recovery groups. At the end of each experimental period, animals were killed and organ weights, sperm characteristics, serum testosterone levels, histology of the testes and fertility were assessed. Results: Morinda lucida leaf extract did not cause any changes in body and somatic organ weights, but significantly increased the testis weight (P < 0.05). The sperm motility and viability, and the epididymal sperm counts of rats treated for 13 weeks were significantly reduced (P < 0.05). Sperm morphological abnormalities and serum testosterone levels were significantly increased (P < 0.05). There were various degrees of damage to the seminiferous tubules. The extract reduced the fertility of the treated rats by reducing the litter size. Reversal of these changes, however, occurred after a period of time. Conclusion: The extract of Morinda lucida has reversible antispermatogenic properties. (Asian J Androl 2005 Dec; 7: 405–410)

isolation and quantitative determination of inulin type oligosaccharides in roots of Morinda officinalis
Carbohydrate Polymers, 2011Co-Authors: Zhenmin Yang, Mingyue ZhaoAbstract:Inulin-type oligosaccharides with different degree of polymerization (DP) were isolated from the traditional Chinese medicine: Morina officinalis by size-exclusion chromatography, and their purities were determined by HPLC–ELSD equipped with cyclodextrin-bond column. Through analysis, the purities of obtained inulin-type oligosaccharides were higher more than 98% by one-step process. The structures of inulin-type oligosaccharides were confirmed by a combination of NMR, MS as well as comparison with already existing NMR data. Using d-fructose and the isolated inulin-type oligosaccharides as standards, a determination method of monosaccharide and inulin-type oligosaccharides in Morinda officinalis was first developed and validated. The validated method was successfully applied to analyze monosaccharide and oligosaccharides in three types of roots of M. officinalis and provided a new basis of assessment on quality of M. officinalis.
