low cost touchscreen driven programmable dual syringe pump for life science applications
HardwareX, 2018Co-Authors: Valentina E Garcia, Joseph L DerisiAbstract:Abstract Syringe pumps are powerful tools able to automate routine laboratory practices that otherwise consume large amounts of manual labor time. Commercially available syringe pumps are expensive, difficult to customize, and often preset for a narrow range of operations. Here, we show how to build a programmable dual syringe pump (PDSP) that overcomes these limitations. The PDSP is driven by a Raspberry Pi paired with a stepper Motor Controller to allow maximal customization via Python scripting. The entire setup can be controlled by a touchscreen for use without a keyboard or mouse. Furthermore, the PDSP is structured around 3D printed parts, enabling users to change any component for their specific application. We demonstrate one application of the PDSP by using it to generate whole cell lysates using a cell homogenizer in an automated fashion.

high speed drive using a slotless pm Motor
IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, 2006Co-Authors: Nicola Bianchi, Silverio Bolognani, F LuiseAbstract:In high speed applications, slotless permanent magnet (PM) Motors appear an attractive solution, being almost insensitive to magneto-motive force harmonics and to pulsewidth modulation (PWM) current ripple and exhibiting lower stator iron losses and rotor losses (significant with squarewave current control). This paper illustrates advantages and drawbacks of a high speed drive using a slotlessPMMotor. The difficulties found during the realization of a 30-krpm 1-kW PM Motor prototype are also highlighted. A low-cost commercial sensorless brushless dc Motor Controller has been used to force squarewave currents without a significant PWM ripple. In order to recognize a possible unexpected rotor arrest, that is not detected by the integrated circuit, an additional control circuit has been designed to detect that anomalous condition and to restart the Motor when it occurs.

novel stepper Motor Controller based on fpga hardware implementation
IEEE-ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, 2003Co-Authors: Daniel Carrica, Marcos Funes, Sergio GonzalezAbstract:This paper proposes a novel stepper Motor Controller based on field programable gate arrays, showing a remarkable performance. The system provides a combination between a novel algorithm and programmable logic to achieve both high speed and high precision on a compact hardware.
