The researchers used qualitative methods to understand the motivations of motorcycle users that might contribute to this growth in six cities: Barranquilla, Bogota (Colombia), Sao Paulo, Recife (Brazil), Caracas (Venezuela), and Buenos Aires (Argentina). Researchers used semi-structured interviews and focus groups to gather data from six categories of motorcycle users: motorcycle taxi drivers, motorcycle taxi users, motorcyclists for delivery, motorcyclists for private use, owners in the process of selling their Motorcycles, and potential motorcyclists (those seeking to buy Motorcycles). Common themes emerged across the six cities, including the time advantage that Motorcycles offered versus deficient public transportation and congested auto traffic, the low cost of Motorcycles versus other transport modes, the vulnerability of motorcyclists to traffic injury and death, and cultural aspects of motorcycle use. Policy implications include the need to make motorcycle travel safer and improve public transportation in Latin American cities.

The developed onboard system was installed on test Motorcycles to collect real-world driving patterns in a mixed traffic and congested urban corridor. The driving cycles of both electric and gasoline Motorcycles were developed, and their driving parameters, energy consumption, CO2 emissions, and energy cost were compared. The results reveal that under the same driving behaviors and traffic conditions, certain driving parameters of the electric motorcycle, including average speed, average running speed, and proportion of time spent idling, were close to those of the gasoline motorcycle. However, the maximum speed and proportion of time spent in acceleration and deceleration were lower for the electric motorcycle than those of the gasoline motorcycle. In contrast, average acceleration, average deceleration, and proportion of time spent cruising were higher for the electric motorcycle than the gasoline motorcycle. The energy consumption, CO2 equivalent emissions, and energy cost of the electric motorcycle was approximately eight, two, and six times lower than those of the gasoline motorcycle, respectively, when driving in a congested urban corridor.

Accident Analysis & Prevention, 2011Co-Authors: Chih Wei PaiAbstract:Abstract The most typical automobile–motorcycle collision take places when an automobile manoeuvres into the path of an approaching motorcycle by violating the motorcycle's right of way (ROW). Aim The present paper provides a comprehensive review of past research that examined motorcycle ROW accidents. Methods Articles and publications were selected for relevance and research strength through a comprehensive search of major databases such as Transportation Research Information Services (TRIS), Compendex, and Medline. Results Two major causes of such a crash scenario are the lack of motorcycle conspicuity and motorist's speed/distance judgment error, respectively. A substantial number of studies have manipulated physical characteristics of Motorcycles and motorcyclists to enhance conspicuity, along with research addressing motorists’ gap-acceptance behaviours and arrival time judgments when confronting Motorcycles. Although various conspicuity aids have proven effective, some researchers reported that motorcyclist's/motorcycle's brightness per se may be less important as a determinant of conspicuity than brightness contrast between the motorcyclists and the surroundings. Larger vehicles tended to be judged to arrive sooner than Motorcycles. Such a speed/distance judgment error is likely attributable to some psychological effects such that larger automobiles appear more threatening than Motorcycles. Older motorists particularly have difficulties in accurately estimating the distance and the speed of an approaching motorcycle. Research examining the effects of conspicuity measures on motorists’ speed/distance judgments when confronting Motorcycles has been rather inconclusive. Conclusions Past research offers valuable insight into the underlying motorcycle ROW crash mechanisms. However, with ageing society and a rapid change in traffic composition (e.g., more larger Motorcycles) in recent years, prior research findings should be updated. The present study finally provides recommendations for future research on motorcycle ROW accidents.

comparison of the regulated air pollutant emission characteristics of real world driving cycle and ece cycle for Motorcycles

However, Motorcycles can emit significant amounts of air pollutants; therefore, the emission characteristics and driving patterns of Motorcycles are necessary baseline information for the implementation of control measures for Motorcycles in urban areas. The selected Motorcycles were equipped with global positioning systems (GPS) to obtain speed–time data for determination of the characteristics of real-world driving parameters, and an on-board exhaust gas analyser with data logger was employed to determine the instantaneous concentration of regulated air pollutants from motorcycle exhaust. Results indicated that the time proportions of acceleration, cruising, and deceleration are different from those of the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) driving cycle, and the time percentages of acceleration and deceleration of the ECE cycle are much less than those in Taichung city. In general, the emission factors of the Taichung motorcycle driving cycle (TMDC) were higher HC and lower NOx emission than those of the ECE cycle. The average fuel consumption of tested Motorcycles on three roads during workdays was 5% higher than that on weekends. The fuel consumption in the real-world motorcycle driving cycle was also about 7% higher than that of the ECE cycle, which again indicates that the ECE cycle is unsuitable for measuring fuel consumption in the Taichung metropolitan area. Therefore, understanding the local driving cycle is necessary for developing accurate emission data for air pollution control measures for urban areas.
