Learning Disability Quarterly, 2011Co-Authors: Scot DanforthAbstract:In the mid-1970s, Donald Hammill and his colleagues authored three scathing critiques of the two most trusted scientific traditions of learning disability treatment - Movement Education and psycholinguistic training (Hammill, 1972; Hammill & Larsen, 1974; Hammill, Goodman, & Wiederholt, 1974), These critical reviews of research rejected the older model of clinical science that had served as the foundation of the field of learning disabilities and celebrated an actuarial form of research. Was Hammill actually proclaiming a change in the orientation toward scientific research, a paradigm shift involving philosophi- cal commitments and methodological practices? This article explores the history of both the foundational clinical science and the new actuarial science that rose to prominence in the field of learning disabilities in the 1970s.

Feeding that political achievement, behind the very idea of a learning disability, was the development of a science that blended neurology, psychology, and Education. This book tracks the historical creation of the science of learning disabilities, beginning with the clinical research with brain-injured World War I soldiers conducted by German physician Kurt Goldstein. It traces the growth of the two primary research traditions, the psycholinguistic theory of Samuel Kirk and the Movement Education of Newell Kephart, exploring how specific scientific orientations, theories, and practices led to the birth of the learning disability in the United States.

Although this technique gained popularity in different parts of the world, it is still regarded as a non-conventional science. Aim Absence of in-depth review and high quality scientific studies in this technique necessitates the need for generation of knowledge and scientific review on this efficient method. Discussion This current review paper made an effort to provide conventional scientific explanation about this method that suits the medical paradigm. In this paper, a brief introduction followed by description of the technique is given with a clinical example toward its application. Furthermore, the neurophysiologic explanation and mechanical concepts are provided in the conventional scientific manner. Indications, contra indications and clinical implications were also discussed to accommodate the clinical practice in musculoskeletal rehabilitation. Conclusions Feldenkrais exercises can be used as an alternative therapy in musculoskeletal rehabilitation for Movement Education.

The aim of this study was to understand the benefits perceived by older people from participation in an “awareness through Movement” (ATM) class, as described in the Feldenkrais Method of Movement Education. This study aimed to be a foundation for future quantitative research and guide the selection of appropriate outcome measures. Methods: Semi-structured interviews with eight participants explored the perceived benefits of older people taking part in a community-based organization Feldenkrais class. The class was conducted by an occupational therapist who was also a Feldenkrais Practitioner. Results: Key themes were varied benefits, the attraction of gentle exercise, body and Movement awareness, and mindfulness.
