    Abstract:

    An objective 4D algorithm developed to track extratropical relative vorticity anomaly 3D structure over time is introduced and validated. The STACKER algorithm, structured with the TRACKER single level tracking algorithm as source of the single-level raw tracks, objectively combines tracks from various levels to determine the 3D structure of the cyclone (or anticyclone) events throughout their life cycle. Stacker works progressively, beginning with two initial levels and then adding additional levels to the stack in a bottom-up and/or top-down approach. This allows an iterative stacking approach, adding one level at a time, resulting in an optimized 4D determination of relative vorticity anomaly events. A two-stage validation process is carried out with the ERA-Interim dataset for the 2015 austral winter. First the overall tracking capability during an austral winter, taking into account a set of climate indicators and their impacts on Southern Hemisphere circulation, was compared to previous climatologies, in order to verify the density and distribution of the cyclone events detected by STACKER. Results show the cyclone density distribution is in very good agreement with previous climatologies, after taking into account potential differences due to climate variability and different tracking methodologies. The second stage focuses on three different long-lived events over the Southern Hemisphere, during the winter of 2015 spanning seven different pressure levels. Both GOES satellite imagery, infrared and water vapour channels, and ERAInterim cloud cover products are used in order to validate the tracks obtained as well as the algorithm’s capability and reliability. The observed 3D cyclone structures and their time evolution are consistent with current understanding of cyclone system development. Thus, the two-stage validation confirms that the algorithm is suitable to track multilevel events, and can follow and analyse their 3-D life cycle and develop full 3D climatologies and climate variability studies

    A growing body of research Views industrial and academic science as characterized by conflicting institutional logics. However, other scholars have long claimed that stark differences between the two sectors exist in theory but not in practice. Drawing on both Views and the broader organizational literature, we develop a conceptual framework to compare and contrast industrial and academic science along four interdependent dimensions: 1 the nature of work, 2 characteristics of the workplace, 3 characteristics of workers, and 4 the disclosure of research results. We then employ detailed survey data on a sample of more than 5,000 research-active life scientists and physical scientists to examine key aspects of the framework empirically. Our results suggest that the conflicting logics View tends to overstate differences across sectors while ignoring important heterogeneity within sectors. We further advance the understanding of institutional logics by examining the relationships among dimensions of science, including the degree to which differences in the nature of work explain differences in how work is organized and results are disclosed. We discuss directions for future research on the institution of science as well as implications for managers and policy makers concerned with scientific activity within and across sectors.

    BACKGROUND Racial disparities in prostate cancer treatment and outcomes are widespread and poorly understood. In the current study, the authors sought to determine whether access to care, measured across multiple dimensions, contributed to racial differences in prostate cancer. METHODS The Philadelphia Area Prostate Cancer Access Study (P2 Access) included 2374 men diagnosed with localized prostate cancer between 2012 and 2014. Men were surveyed to assess their experiences accessing care (response rate of 51.1%). The authors determined appointment availability at 151 urology practices using simulated patient telephone calls and calculated travel distances using geospatial techniques. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to determine the association between 5 different domains of access (availability, accessibility, accommodation, affordability, and acceptability) and receipt of treatment, perceived quality of care, and physician-patient communication. RESULTS There were 1907 non-Hispanic white and 394 black men in the study cohort. Overall, approximately 85% of the men received definitive treatment with no differences noted by race. Black men were less likely to report a high quality of care (69% vs 81%; P<.001) and good physician-patient communication (60% vs 71%; P<.001) compared with white men. In adjusted models, none of the 5 domains of access were found to be associated with definitive treatment overall or with radical prostatectomy. All access domains were associated with perceived quality of care and communication, although these domains did not mediate racial disparities. CONCLUSIONS To the authors' knowledge, the current study presents the first comprehensive assessment of prostate cancer care access, treatment, and patient experience, demonstrating that although access was related to overall perceived quality of care and better physician-patient communication, it did not appear to explain observed racial differences.     Abstract This study investigates the complex relationships among strategy, advanced manufacturing technology (AMT) and performance using survey responses from 160 U.S. manufacturing firms. In contrast to previous studies that emphasize only the flexibility dimension of AMT, this study adopts a Multidimensional View of AMT by stressing the information processing capability inherent in AMTs. The study found support for four dimensions of AMT: information exchange and planning technology (IEPT), product design technology (PDT), low-volume flexible automation technology (LVFAT), and high-volume automation technology (HVAT). The results found also indicate empirical support for the study's major premise that a fit between certain strategy–AMT dimensions will be associated with superior performance. Using the findings, the study discusses the implications of the findings and suggests several avenues for future research.

    Abstract This study examines the relationships among the variables Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AMT) use, Firm Size, and Performance in US manufacturing firms using a Multidimensional definition of AMT. The study's four major findings are based on empirical analyses of survey data collected from 160 manufacturing firms. First, evidence indicates that there are at least four dimensions of AMT including: Information Exchange and Planning Technology (IEPT), Product Design Technology (PDT), High-Volume Automation Technology (HVAT), and Low-Volume Flexible Automation Technology (LVFAT). This brings to light a key difference between the literature and the four empirically determined dimensions of AMT: empirical dimensions include two distinct dimensions for shop floor technology while most conceptual schemes do not. Second, AMT use across three of these dimensions increases linearly as firm size increases logarithmically; however, the use of some dimensions of AMT increase more rapidly with firm size than others. Third, AMT use does not show any direct impact on firm performance. Finally, firm size weakly moderates the AMT-performance relationship; perhaps, due to their superior resource base, larger firms are able to use AMTs more effectively.
