    Abstract:

    Multimedia Documents have to be played on multiple device types. Hence, usage and platform diversity requires Document adaptation according to execution contexts, not generally predictable at design time. In an earlier work, a semantic framework for Multimedia Document adaptation was proposed. In this framework, a Multimedia Document is interpreted as a set of potential executions corresponding to the author specification. To each target device corresponds a set of possible executions complying with the device constraints. In this context, adapting requires to select an execution that satisfies the target device constraints and which is as close as possible from the initial composition. This theoretical adaptation framework does not specifically consider the main Multimedia Document dimensions, i.e., temporal, spatial and hypermedia. In this paper, we propose a concrete application of this framework on standard Multimedia Documents. For that purpose, we first define an abstract structure that captures the spatio-temporal and hypermedia dimensions of Multimedia Documents, and we develop an adaptation algorithm which transforms in a minimal way such a structure according to device constraints. Then, we show how this can be used for adapting concrete Multimedia Documents in SMIL through converting the Documents in the abstract structure, using the adaptation algorithm, and converting it back in SMIL. This can be used for other Document formats without modifying the adaptation algorithm.

    Abstract:

    The diversity of presentation contexts for Multimedia Documents requires the adaptation of Document specifications. In an earlier work, we have proposed a semantic adaptation framework for Multimedia Documents. This framework captures the semantics of the Document composition and transforms the relations between Multimedia objects according to adaptation constraints. In this paper,we show that relying on Document composition alone for adaptation restricts the set of relevant candidate solutions and may even divert the adaptation from the authors intent.Hence, we propose to introduce functional annotations to guide the adaptation process. Theses annotations allow to refine the role of Multimedia objects in the Document. We show that SMIL Documents could embed functional annotations encoded in RDF. These Multimedia Documents are then adapted thanks to an interactive adaptation tool.

In this paper, we extend the proposed adaptation with this capability. Thanks to this extension, we present a method for summarizing Multimedia Documents. Moreover, when Multimedia objects are removed, the resulted Document satisfies some properties such as presentation contiguity. To validate our framework, we adapt standard Multimedia Documents such as SMIL Documents.

    Abstract:

    The multiplication of execution contexts for Multimedia Documents requires the adaptation of Document specifications. This paper instantiates our previous semantic approach for Multimedia Document adaptation to the spatial dimension of Multimedia Documents. Our goal is to find a qualitative spatial representation that computes, in a reasonable time, a set of adaptation solutions close to the initial Document satisfying a profile. The quality of an adaptation can be regarded in two respects: expressiveness of adaptation solutions and computation speed. In this context, we propose a new spatial representation sufficiently expressive to adapt Multimedia Documents faster.

    Abstract:

    Nowadays, Multimedia Documents are omnipresent at any time from and to any devices. However, mobile devices heterogeneity and the various contexts of the user require their adaptation. In this context, the existing systems transform contents to comply with the target constraints. Nevertheless, the current solutions do not exploit the profile semantic benefits to reason upon the context for assisting the adaptation. Furthermore, there is no work that care of adapting HTML pages containing CSS and changing in time, where time specification is declarative (e.g. by means of timesheets). This paper provides an adaptation approach called “Handicap-based Multimedia Adaptation” (HaMA), in which each context constraint corresponds to handicap types in order to discover adaptation services. Thus, a generic ontology is introduced to reason upon the context and then deduces the corresponding handicap in order to infer the suitable adaptation guideline. Also, we propose a method for selecting appropriate services with respect to quality criteria. To validate HaMA, scenarios were implemented.

    Abstract:

    One of the key aspects of any mobile Multimedia application is the management of Multimedia Documents. Currently, these Documents are accessible on a wide variety of devices, such as laptops, tablets and smartphones. The (hardware and software) heterogeneity of such devices and the diversity of user preferences require adaptation of Multimedia contents. Since the last decade, a fair amount of research has been conducted in order to develop adaptation frameworks. These frameworks generally transform Documents in order to comply with all target device constraints. For that purpose, they generally exploit device and user profiles in order to detect conflicts between the target execution context and the Document characteristics that is going to be played. Furthermore, when conflicts have been detected, they usually search and compose several relevant adaptation components that will perform the Document transformations in order to solve these conflicts. However, we have noticed that current adaptation frameworks do not fully exploit the semantic benefits for describing the profiles, the adaptation components and the quality of services. In this chapter, we propose a model for specifying rich profiles containing explicit constraints expressions with qualitative and quantitative information. Moreover, we propose a generic ontology that handles semantic rules allowing the automatic generation of a dynamic and a quality composition of heterogeneous adaptation components. Our proposal has the great advantage to offer to users a global flexible adaptation infrastructure exploiting semantic information at multiple levels, i.e., from profiles to the computation of adapted Multimedia Documents.

    Currently, Multimedia Documents can be accessed at anytime and anywhere with a wide variety of mobile devices, such as laptops, smartphones, and tablets. Obviously, platform heterogeneity, users' preferences, and context variations require Document adaptation according to execution constraints. For example, audio contents may not be played while a user is participating in a meeting. Current context modeling languages do not handle such real life user constraints. These languages generally list multiple information values that are interpreted by adaptation processes in order to deduce implicitly such high-level constraints. In this chapter, the authors overcome this limitation by proposing a novel context modeling approach based on services, where context information is linked according to explicit high-level constraints. In order to validate the proposal, the authors have used semantic Web technologies by specifying RDF profiles and experimenting on their usage on several platforms.

    Currently, Multimedia contents can be accessed at anytime and anywhere with a wide variety of devices, such as laptops, smartphones and tablets. In this paper, we present a service-based Multimedia adaptation architecture where adaptation services can be available locally and remotely on multiple platforms. When conflicts are detected between some Multimedia Document properties and profile constraints, we propose a procedure that selects relevant adaptation services in order to compute an adapted Document. This procedure may be executed locally or remotely, moreover for unsovled conflicts this one indicates which services may have to be installed.

    Abstract:

    Time dependent Multimedia Document (TDMD), a tool that supports human communication under distributed computing environments, is described. TDMD supports various types of communication media, including audio, video, text, graphics, and image. Multimedia presentation is formally defined, and it is shown that, TDMD can be represented uniquely as a tree structure. In the structure, hyperlink information can be included by introducing graphical interface buttons, which are treated the same way as other media. The content information included in a button is its visual appearance as a metaphor and the name of a destination node from which successive presentation begins when the button is selected. By using such link information, several browsing paths can be included in TDMD. Buttons also give viewers control over the speed of a presentation. >

    A time-dependent Multimedia Document (TDMD) system is being developed. A method for formally specifying the structure of time-dependent Documents is proposed. A time-dependent Document consists of temporal information, spatial information and content information. The proposed structure can include various types of objects which can specify those three types of information. It is shown that a tree structure is suitable for representing a TDMD system. By using the proposed structure, intelligent processing such as retrieving of content information by name, by time, and by location, independent editing of content information, location editing, and time editing can be realized. To interchange a Document between computers, the structure of the Document is described by ASN.1. A prototype system was implemented in which a time-dependent Document can be interchanged between SUN workstations. >

    Existing Multimedia Document models like HTML, MHEG, SMIL, and HyTime lack appropriate modeling primitives that meet speci�c requirements given by advanced Multimedia information system applications. In traditional Multimedia applications, Multimedia Document models just had to cope with the modeling of the temporal, spatial, and interactive course of a Multimedia presentation. However, we seriously question whether existing models fit the needs of next generation Multimedia applications that bring up requirements like reusability of Multimedia content in different presentations and contexts, and adaptation to user preferences. In this paper, we motivate and present new requirements stemming from advanced Multimedia applications and the resulting consequences for Multimedia Document models. Along these requirements, we discuss HTML, HyTime, MHEG, SMIL, and ZYX, a new model that has been developed with special focus on reusability and adaptation. The analysis and comparison of the models show the limitations of existing models, point the way to the need for new exible Multimedia Document models, and throw light on the many implications on authoring systems, Multimedia content management, and presentation.

    Advanced Multimedia applications require adequate support for the modeling of Multimedia content by Multimedia Document models. This support more and more calls not only for the adequate modeling of the temporal and spatial course of a Multimedia presentation and its interactions, but also for the partial reuse of Multimedia Documents and adaptation to a given user context. Our thorough investigation of existing standards for Multimedia Document models such as HTML, MHEG, SMIL, and HyTime, (see also [BKW99]), however, leads to us the conclusion, that these standard models do not provide sufficient modeling support for reuse and adaptation. Therefore, we propose a new approach for the modeling of adaptable and reusable Multimedia content, the ZYX model. The model offers primitives that provide - beyond the more or less common primitives for temporal, spatial, and interaction modeling - a variform support for reuse of structure and layout of Document fragments and for the adaptation of the content and its presentation to the user context. We present the model in detail and illustrate the application and effectiveness of these concepts by samples taken from our Cardio-OP application in the domain of cardiac surgery. With the ZYX model, we developed a comprehensive means for advanced Multimedia content creation: support for template-driven authoring of Multimedia content; support for flexible, dynamic composition of Multimedia Documents customized to the user's local context and needs. The approach significantly impacts and supports the authoring process in terms of methodology and economic aspects.
