  • STUDIES ON THE PROTEINS OF SMOOTH Muscle II. THE MYosINs OF THE OcTopus, SNAIL, SEA CUCUMBER AND SEA
    2015
    Co-Authors: John W. Mehl
    Abstract:

Despite great advances in our knowledge of the composition of mus dc, and of the chemical reactions which accompany contraction, it cannot yet be said that we have any real understanding of the process of thus cular contraction. One of the obstacles in the way of such an under standing is our lack of knowledge regarding the position of the Muscle proteins, and their role in contraction. From the standpoint of struc ture, myosin appears to be the most important protein in Muscle. The available evidence indicates that myosin accounts for from 40 to 50 per cent of the total proteins of Muscle (1) (2) (3) (4). Both the optical properties and the X-ray diffraction patterns of Muscle fibres and myosin fibres show a striking correspondence (5) (6) (7) (8) (9). It would therefore appear reasonable to suppose that the Muscle Fibril is essentially a fibre of oriented myosin molecules, and that contraction is associated with a contraction of this fibre. There are, however, a number of un solved problems, such as the significance of the anistropic and isotropic bands (striations) in striated Muscle and the existence or non-existence of certain membranes across the fibre axis. Some aspects of these prob lems have been discussed by Weber (3) (4) and by Bernal (10). Because of its apparently greater structural simplicity, smooth Muscle might seem to be a better system for investigation. Under any circum stances, any general theory of the place of myosin or other proteins in muscular contraction must consider the properties of both smooth and striated Muscle. In particular, it seems desirable to extend our informa tion regarding the properties and distribution of myosin. Previous stud ies have been limited largely to the striated Muscle of the vertebrates, although von Muralt and Edsall (11) have reported the isolation of myosin from the smooth Muscle of the marine snail, Bus ycon. More recently myosin has been prepared from lobster Muscle (12). Bailey also studied the composition of the myosins of skeletal Muscle of severa

  • Effect of dissection and reconstruction of palatal Muscles on histological structure and ultrastructure of soft palate
    Journal of Practical Stomatology, 2010
    Co-Authors: Zheng Qian
    Abstract:

Objective:To observe the effect of dissection and reconstruction on palatal Muscles morphology in cats. Methods:Nine cats were randomly divided into three groups according to the extension of Muscle dissection:small area group(1/3 group),medium area group(1/3-2/3 group)and large-scale area group(2/3 group).Control group was the normal palatal Muscle in any normal side of the palate.Palatal Muscles of all experimental groups were dissected from the posterior border of the hard palate and were reconstructed later. The morphology features and ultrastructure of palatal Muscles were observed respectively by HE staining and transmission electron microcopy 1-3 month after operation. Results:There were no obvious differences in morphologic features and ultrastructure of palatal Muscles between experiment and normal control groups when the range of palatal Muscle dissection was less than 2/3.At early stage(1 month)after operation in large-scale area group, the arrangement of Muscles fiber were in structural disorder with inflammatory cell infiltration and Muscle Fibril formation. The Z line was not distinct,Muscles fiber became narrow and myocomma arrangement was not fully dense under transmission electron microcopy. At later stage(2 or 3 month after operation)in large-scale area group, the arrangement of Muscles fiber were comparatively regular, neonatal Muscles fibers became gradually mature and the amount of inflammatory cell had obviously decreased.Ultrastructure study showed that myocomma arrangement was more orderliness, and Z line became more distinct. Conclusion:It suggests that the extensive dissection of palatal Muscles carried no fibrosis, and injury musculature could be repaired and regenerated.

  • Histological Effects of Detraining on Rat's Skeletal Muscle
Journal of Xi'an Institute of Physical Education, 2002
    Co-Authors: Zhou Si-hong
    Abstract:

After 6 weeks increment training, then executed detraining for 4 weeks, and measured fo histological evaluation respectively using optical and electric microscope on rat's gastrocnemius This study finds, through micro-telescope and electric-telescope,tiny changes can be observed in internal Muscle Fibril and connective tissue, analyzed the mechanism of 4 week's detraining reduced Muscle'sexercise ability, suggested Muscle should maintain suitable intensity to execute detraining so that it can not make performance reduced significantly

  • Efficacy of recombinant human neurotrophin-4 injection on the regeneration of rat sciatic nerve
China Journal of Modern Medicine, 2012
    Co-Authors: Zhang Dong-qing
    Abstract:

【Objective】 To investigate the effect of recombinant human neurotrophin-4(NT-4) injection on the regeneration of rat sciatic nerve.【Methods】 38 adult male Wistar rats were selected and randomly divided into control group(CG) and experiment group(EG).The bilateraI sciatic nerve injury models was established with neurotomy. The injured segments were injected normal saline in the CG and NT-4 in the EG.The action of limbs, nerve function index(NFI) and histological anatomy of gastrocnemius,Muscle fiber density and diameter were observed.【Result】 The locomotion ability of limbs was recovered after 20 months,no amyotrophy was observed on gastrocnemius of EG while CG was opposite. The nerves function index,Muscle fiber density and diameter of EG were larger than CG after 20 months; In the CG,the Muscle Fibril was interstitial edema and collagen fiber was dissolved, while the cell shapes of EG were spherical or polygon, the myoFibril was schillerization.【Conclusion】 Local NT-4 injection could facilitate peripheral nerve regeneration and promote the functional recovery in a dose-dependent manner.

  • A bioinspired soft actuated material.
    Advanced Materials, 2013
Co-Authors: Ellen T. Roche, Robert Wohlfarth, Johannes T. B. Overvelde, Nikolay V. Vasilyev, Frank A. Pigula, David J. Mooney, Katia Bertoldi, Conor J. Walsh
    Abstract:

A class of soft actuated materials that can achieve lifelike motion is presented. By embedding pneumatic actuators in a soft material inspired by a biological Muscle Fibril architecture, and developing a simple finite element simulation of the same, tunable biomimetic motion can be achieved with fully soft structures, exemplified here by an active left ventricle simulator.
