  • TBT-gehalten en effecten bij de Geowne Alikruik, de Gevlochten Fuikhoorn en de Purperslak langs de Nederlansdse kust in 2013
    IMARES, 2013
    Co-Authors: Hoek-van Nieuwenhuizen, Van M., Jol J.g., Kaag N.h.b.m.
    Abstract:

  • dynamic response of a mud snail Nassarius sinusigerus to changes in sediment biogeochemistry
    Marine Ecology Progress Series, 2003
Co-Authors: N Eden, Timor Katz, Dror L Angel
    Abstract:

It has been widely documented that point sources of organic enrichment elicit abun- dance peaks in the distribution of benthic opportunistic species. However, the temporal dimension of such phenomena has not been examined. In this study, we explored the dynamic relationship between the seasonal distribution pattern of the mud snail Nassarius sinusigerus and the geochemi- cal conditions of the sediment along an organic enrichment gradient adjacent to a commercial fish farm. Cluster analysis of total dissolved sulfides (TDS), dissolved oxygen (DO) and organic matter (OM) revealed 3 distinct groups: 'highly', 'moderately' and 'slightly' impacted sediments. The sea- sonal distribution of N. sinusigerus along a transect away from the fish farm indicated that a peak in snail abundance was associated with the moderately impacted sediments, occurred between 20 and 80 m from the center of the farm, and corresponded to (DO) > 0.3 ppm and (hydrogen sulfide) < 1 µM. When the sediment conditions near the farm deteriorated during summer, the peak in snail abun- dance shifted away from the farm. An improvement in sediment conditions during the following winter enabled the migration of N. sinusigerus toward the farm. The factor drawing N. sinusigerus toward the farm was probably food availability, as suggested by the strong attraction of the snails to the sediments and to annelids below the fish cages. This study suggests that the distribution of N. sinusigerus around fish farms is determined by the balance between the attraction of the gastropod to the organically enriched sediments below the fish cages and deterrence due to deleterious sediment geochemistry (mainly anoxia and sulfides). As such, the distribution of N. sinusigerus may serve as an indicator of sediment conditions.

  • inshore offshore gradients of imposex and organotin contamination in Nassarius reticulatus l along the portuguese coast
    Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2008
Co-Authors: Milene Rato, Miguel B Gaspar, Shin Takahashi, Shinichi Yano, Shinsuke Tanabe, Carlos M Barroso
    Abstract:

Imposex and organotin (OT) tissue contamination of the netted whelk Nassarius reticulatus (L.) were assessed in the continental shelves around the main estuaries of the central coast of Portugal (Lisbon: Tagus estuary; Setubal: Sado estuary) and the main coastal lagoon in the Southern of Portugal (Faro: Ria Formosa). Pollution levels were higher in areas of more intense boat traffic and shipyard activities and imposex showed a clear decreasing gradient from the estuaries to the offshore, in relation to a similar gradient of tissue contamination by tributyltin. Remarkably, imposex was extensively spread over the adjacent continental shelves of Tagus and Sado estuaries. The current work shows that TBT pollution is undoubtedly a matter of concern not only for the above estuaries where harbours are implanted but also for the adjacent continental shelves, regardless the massive dilution of contaminants that may occur in these deeper areas.

  • imposex and organotin contamination in Nassarius reticulatus l along the portuguese coast
    Applied Organometallic Chemistry, 2005
Co-Authors: Ana C A Sousa, Sonia Mendo, Carlos M Barroso
    Abstract:

Nassarius reticulatus (whelk) imposex levels and organotin body burden (b.b.) were surveyed along the Portuguese coast, from Vila Praia de Âncora (northern limit) to Lagos (southern limit), between May and August 2003. The percentage of females affected with imposex (%I), the relative penis length index (RPLI), the vas deferens sequence index (VDSI) and the degree of female oviduct convolution index (AOS) were used to assess the level of imposex at each site. These imposex indices were determined for 23 sampling stations throughout the coast and were in the range 0.0–100%, 0.0–90%, 0.0–5.0 and 0.0–1.3 respectively. Sterile females (i.e. females carrying aborted egg capsules inside the capsule gland) were found inside the harbours of Viana do Castelo (8.5%) and Aveiro (3.7%). Organotin compounds were assessed at 10 sampling sites spread along the coast. Tributyltin (TBT) b.b. in females varied between 39 and 1679 ng g−1 (as tin) dry weight, and dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT) varied in the ranges 23–1084 ng g−1 (as tin) d and 18–939 ng g−1 dry wt respectively. Among the butyltins, the major fraction corresponded to TBT (47.4%), followed by DBT (27.6%) and MBT (25.0%), which indicates recent TBT inputs. Triphenyltin (TPT) levels ranged from <5 to 21 ng g−1 (as tin), and, when quantifiable, represented on average 10% of that of TBT. TPT was the dominant phenyltin and was detected in 60% of the sampling stations. The imposex was significantly correlated to ln (TBT) (Spearman r = 0.918, p < 0.001 for RPLI; r = 0.864, p < 0.001 for VDSI; r = 0.828, p < 0.01 for AOS). The higher levels of imposex and TBT contamination occurred inside or close to harbours, which we identified as ‘hotspots’ of pollution along the coast. Comparing the results obtained in the current work with those reported in a similar survey in 2000, imposex and TBT b.b. varied locally but did not reveal any global trend in the variation of TBT pollution along the Portuguese coast over the 3 year period. • the effectiveness of some compounds derived from antifouling paints in promoting imposex in Nassarius reticulatus
Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, 2002
    Co-Authors: Carlos M Barroso, M A Reishenriques, Marta Ferreira, M H Moreira
    Abstract:

Adult Nassarius reticulatus were exposed for two to three months to dissolved tributyltin (TBT), dibutyltin (DBT), triphenyltin (TPT) and diphenyltin (DPT) chlorides and to copper sulphate (CuSO 4 ) in order to study the effectiveness of these compounds to induce imposex (penis and vas deferens development). The dialkyltins and copper did not promote imposex under exposure to 500 ng Sn l -1 and 500 ng Gu l -1 . However, dissolved nominal concentrations varying between 100 and 500 ng Sn l -1 of TBT or TPT induced imposex in, respectively, 22 to 43% and 24 to 44% of the females. The testosterone titres of females increased significantly after two months' exposure to 250 ng Sn l -1 of TPT and TBT and the same happened to males exposed to 100 and 250 ng TPT-Sn l -1 and to 250 ng TBT-Sn l -1 ..
