  • the sexual objectification of women in advertising a contemporary cultural perspective
    Journal of Advertising Research, 2008
Co-Authors: Amanda Zimmerman, John S Dahlberg
    Abstract:

This study measures attitudes of young women to sexually objectified advertising. A survey combining elements of two previous studies (Ford, LaTour, and Lundstrom, 1991; Mittal and Lassar, 2000) was administered to 94 female undergraduates. Results show significant (p < 0.001) changes in attitudes of young, educated women. Respondents agreed females were portrayed as sex objects in advertisements, but were less offended by these portrayals than female respondents in 1991. Results also show females' attitudes toward the advertisement have little effect on purchase intention, a highly significant change from attitudes of women in 1991. SINCE THE REBIRTH of the women's movement in the 1960s, critics consistently have raged against the way advertising treats women. Scantily clad, suggestively portrayed women sell every different type of product on television, in magazines, and now on personal computer screens, in increasing numbers, since the 1980s. In the past, young, educated women were the strongest critics of advertisements. Many of the changes in the advertising industry occurred because these women raised their voices in protest. This study examines how today's generation of young, educated females feels about the portrayal of women in advertisements and the consequences of those attitudes. For women born in the early 1980s, sex in the media has been a constant companion. Sex is everywhere, on prime time television programs, movies, and music videos. It is rare to view an hour of television and not see a suggestively dressed or undressed female, whether in a program or a commercial. Sexual imagery appears in magazine articles and advertisements. A recent issue of Cosmopolitan might contain hundreds of half-naked women, stories of sexual mishaps, and even instructions for the ancient art of Kama Sutra. The Kaiser Family Foundation, a nonprofit National Health Organization, found that sexual con

  • nutraceuticals in hypercholesterolaemia an overview
    British Journal of Pharmacology, 2017
    Co-Authors: Antonello Santini, Ettore Novellino
    Abstract:

Growing attention is nowadays given to the possible preventive/alternative ways to avoid illness onset. Lifestyle change and proper food habits are taking over the conventional pharmaceutical based approach especially for chronic pathologies. Nutraceuticals propose themselves as a key tool to prevent and cure some pathologic conditions. This is leading the research to develop new formulations based on these pharma-foods addressed in a specific way to prevent and cure Health issues, which, in turn, will have an impact on the therapy-related cost to be sustained by any National Health Organization. According to the existing regulations, nutraceuticals do not fall into both the categories of food and drugs but, as per their definition, often inhabit a grey area in between the two, being assimilated to the food supplements notwithstanding the Health beneficial properties which they can provide towards some pathologic conditions. Nutraceuticals based approach for the Health management, in particular for some pathological conditions, resulted in a worldwide growing “nutraceutical” revolution. An outstanding example is the approach to the “metabolic syndrome”, which includes overweight, obesity, and cardio vascular related diseases, causing a sort of cascade chronic Health conditions which is becoming a norm in modern life. Hypercholesterolemia is one of these. It represents an example of a pathology that can be linked to both non correct lifestyle and dietary habits. The nutraceutical approach to hypercholesterolemia is described in the present review as a possible alternative to the conventional drug-based therapy. This article is protected by copyright. • The figure of the Herbalist-Healer in Uganda.New challenges out of contact with the National Health Organization policies
Kervan. International Journal of Afro-Asiatic Studies, 2016
    Co-Authors: Gilberto Borri
    Abstract:

In this paper I will analyse in which way the traditional healers’ functions in Konzo society have changed when they got in contact with other religions such as Islam and Christianity. Despite a lot of academic works about konzo culture, there are very few informations and researches about therole played by herbalists in their society and the changes occurred since the colonial era to nowadays. It is possible that at first, medium and herbalist, were merged in the same social figure, but they started to separate because of the hostility of Christianity to medianic practices. Also the role of the herbalists changed along with the concept of cure inching closer to that of Western pharmaceutical drugs. This process has been incremented by the approach of the associations born to increment the Health levels in Africa and by the new lines proposed by the WHO (mostly the “Traditional Medicine Strategy 2014-2023”). It aimed to develop interNational standards, to guide and promote researches about the use of medical herbs and encourage the integration with western Health sistems. These are part of the results of a field research I carried out in 2011 and 2015. In this field work I have spent five months with groups of traditional local “healers”. During that period I have had the chance to observe how any group was characterized by its own peculiarity by trying to comprehend the reasons of this new reality.
