    This chapter deals with enterprise Netscreen management. As Netscreen and the enterprise deployment grow, NSM will become a component that should definitely be considered. It is one of the key strengths of a Juniper Netscreen solution. Syslog and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) fit into management systems already in place. Issues like tracking logs, configurations changes, virtual private networks (VPNs), and whether a device is properly functioning can be an overwhelming task for an administrator. There are options available to simplify this task. Netscreen devices provide support for tools like Syslog and SNMP. In addition, Juniper has developed a product called Netscreen Security Manager that provides a centralized method to manage and administer firewalls across the distributed enterprise. Netscreen Security Manager (NSM) provides the ability to manage up to 1,000 devices from a single location. This includes the hardware configuration, policies, VPNs, logging, and troubleshooting.

The chapter describes the core technologies that make up the Netscreen firewall product line. Zones are a core part of the Netscreen firewall. They allow the administrator to divide networks into logical separations. This allows the simplification of the policy creation process by clearly allowing or denying access to different network segments based upon their applied zones. Netscreen bends the idea of a firewall with the use of virtual routers. Virtual routers allow the separation of all of the routing domains into separate logical entities. This enables a firewall to employ the firewall as a true router without compromising Security. The Netscreen firewall product again bends the traditional look of a firewall by acting as a transparent device in the network, providing full firewalling features. Thus, the Netscreen firewall product line provides a complete selection of firewalling products that can cover any company's needs. It is important to understand how to manage it before one begins using the firewall. The chapter begins by explaining the various methods of managing the Netscreen firewall. Each option and best-known procedure is discussed. There are two core types of remote management, the WebUI and the CLI. If one is using the serial console, Telnet, or secure shell, one is using the CLI. It is important to be proficient in both management tools. The WebUI is initially easier to use. The chapter also mentions a third type of management called the Netscreen-Security Manager. This chapter also discusses configuring the Netscreen firewall to run on the network. Zones are a core part of the Netscreen Security infrastructure. The Security zone is the most commonly used zone. It is used on every interface and in every policy. Each interface must be bound to a zone. The chapter also explores the various types of interfaces that the firewall supports. The physical interface is used on each type of Netscreen device to interact with the network. The firewall can operate in two modes, layer three and layer two.
