a Network theory of power
2011Co-Authors: Manuel CastellsAbstract:1. Networking Power: the power of the actors and organizations included in the Networks that constitute the core of the global Network Society over human collectives and individuals who are not included in these global Networks. 2. Network Power: the power resulting from the standards required to coordinate social interaction in the Networks. In this case, power is exercised not by exclusion from the Networks but by the imposition of the rules of inclusion. 3. Networked Power: the power of social actors over other social actors in the Network. The forms and processes of Networked power are specific to each Network. 4. Network-making Power: the power to program specific Networks according to the interests and values of the programmers, and the power to switch different Networks following the strategic alliances between the dominant actors of various Networks. Counterpower is exercised in the Network Society by fighting to change the programs of specific Networks and by the effort to disrupt the switches that reflect dominant interests and replace them with alternative switches between Networks. Actors are humans, but humans are organized in Networks. Human Networks act on Networks via the programming and switching of organizational Networks. In the Network Society, power and counterpower aim fundamentally at influencing the neural Networks in the human mind by using mass communication Networks and mass self-communication Networks.

globalisation Networking urbanisation reflections on the spatial dynamics of the information age
Urban Studies, 2010Co-Authors: Manuel CastellsAbstract:The Network Society is a global Society because Networks have no boundaries. Spatial transformation is a fundamental dimension of this new social structure. The global process of urbanisation that we are experiencing in the early 21st century is characterised by the formation of a new spatial architecture in our planet, made up of global Networks connecting major metropolitan regions and their areas of influence. Since the Networking form of territorial arrangements also extends to the intrametropolitan structure, our understanding of contemporary urbanisation should start with the study of these Networking dynamics in both the territories that are included in the Networks and in the localities excluded from the dominant logic of global spatial integration.

switching power rupert murdoch and the global business of media politics a sociological analysis
International Sociology, 2008Co-Authors: Amelia Arsenault, Manuel CastellsAbstract:This article proposes a hypothesis on the nature of power in the Network Society, the social structure of the Information Age. It argues that the ability to control connection points between different Networks (e.g. business, media and economic Networks) is a critical source of power in contemporary Society. It then tests this hypothesis through a case study of Rupert Murdoch, CEO of NewsCorp. The operational dynamics of Rupert Murdoch and NewsCorp are examined in order to illustrate how corporate media actors negotiate the power dynamics of the Network Society to serve their overarching business goals. It identifies key strategies used by these actors to penetrate new markets and expand audience share including: political brokering, leveraging public opinion, instituting sensationalist news formulas, customizing media content and diversifying and adapting media holdings in the face of technological and regulatory changes.

Apache Hama: An Emerging Bulk Synchronous Parallel Computing Framework for Big Data Applications
IEEE Access, 2016Co-Authors: Kamran Siddique, Zahid Akhtar, Edward J. Yoon, Young-sik Jeong, Dipankar Dasgupta, Yangwoo KimAbstract:In today's highly intertwined Network Society, the demand for big data processing frameworks is continuously growing. The widely adopted model to process big data is parallel and distributed computing. This paper documents the significant progress achieved in the field of distributed computing frameworks, particularly Apache Hama, a top level project under the Apache Software Foundation, based on bulk synchronous parallel processing. The comparative studies and empirical evaluations performed in this paper reveal Hama's potential and efficacy in big data applications. In particular, we present a benchmark evaluation of Hama's graph package and Apache Giraph using PageRank algorithm. The results show that the performance of Hama is better than Giraph in terms of scalability and computational speed. However, despite great progress, a number of challenging issues continue to inhibit the full potential of Hama to be used at large scale. This paper also describes these challenges, analyzes solutions proposed to overcome them, and highlights research opportunities.

the rise of the Network Society the information age economy Society and culture
Contemporary Educational Technology, 2016Co-Authors: Taner Kizilhan, Sevil Bal KizilhanAbstract:Castell’s book is the first part of his milstone “The Information Age: Economy Society, and Culture” work. The author states that, the triology was prepared to be a single book, but then with the contributions of the editor, it was divided into three books by making each part of the study a separate book. In this particular book, Castells presents an easily understandable and comprehensive analysis by examining the economic, social, and cultural changes that caused by the Network Society. He does this by being as realistic as possible and reaching a clear conclusion by supporting all of his claims with various statistics and examples.
