2020Co-Authors: Esteban TorresAbstract:Since 1989, the opposition between the net and the self is the main formula Manuel Castells has proposed to synthesize his views on the structural dynamics of contemporary societies. In this article we analyze the main aspects of this postulate, focusing on the relationship it establishes with the issue of power. Our examination reveals that this connection, meandering and disorienting on the explicit level of his social theory, promotes a reductionist and non-relational conception of power, and one sustained by a certain spatial determinism. We also analyze the logics of articulation involved in the formula, and its connection to his main social metaphors, the information age and the knowledge society. Lastly, we look at the main problem arising from the opposition between the net and the self: the breakdown of patterns of social communication.

Astrolabio: Nueva Época, 2015Co-Authors: Esteban TorresAbstract:In this paper I analyze Manuel Castells´s main formula of power associated with his notion of flow, and one of the centerpieces of his sociological theory of power from 1986: the relationship between flows of power and power of flows. This is a conceptual formula not defined by the author, strikingly cryptic and elusive, while absolutely key to understanding his contemporary vision of power and State. The research help to discover, inter alia, the relationship between economics and politics that finally proposes the Spanish sociologist, from which it follows an extremely radical version of the thesis of irreversible decline of the nation state, still in force in contemporary social theory despite the sociopolitical changes recorded in Latin America in recent years.

Utopía y Praxis Latinoamericana, 2014Co-Authors: Esteban TorresAbstract:En el presente articulo nos ocupamos de investigar el modo en que se presenta el vinculo entre comunicacion y politica en la obra de Manuel Castells, lo cual exige ingresar en la articulacion que dichas nociones establecen con el concepto de espacio publico. El estudio se concentra en el analisis sistematico de las tres operaciones teoricas principales que efectua el sociologo espanol en el marco de dicha relacion, que permanecen en gran medida invisibilizadas: el traspaso de la nocion de espacio publico de las instituciones a la comunicacion, la identificacion entre comunicacion y espacio publico, y finalmente la oposicion entre comunicacion-espacio publico y Estado. Esta ultima abre el paso a una ideologia antiestatal que nuestro autor se encarga de minimizar, y cuyo reconocimiento se constituye en uno de los hallazgos centrales de la investigacion. El trabajo permite desnudar la tactica de apropiacion que despliega Castells en relacion a sus fuentes teoricas principales, entre las que se cuentan las producciones de Jurgen Habermas y de John Thompson.

The central purpose of this piece of work is the decoding of the main theoretical operations the Spanish sociologist carries out within this framework, as well as the general views insinuated through them. For this we will pay special attention to the tactics of appropriation that displays the Catalan sociologist in relation to the theoretical sources present in this space of intersection: Jean Baudrillard, Roland Barthes y Neil Postman. The present research, that only partially addresses the different aspects that constitute the cultural theory of the author, allow us to discover the adoption by Castells of a techno mediatic conception of communication and culture, that tend to subsume his general concept of culture, and largely is recreated in the shadow of an explicit and generalist discourse of the sociocultural communication

Berkeley Planning Journal, 2014Co-Authors: Manuel Castells, Mukul KumarAbstract:On October 25, 2013, the Berkeley Planning Journal hosted Professor Manuel Castells in a round-table discussion with doctoral and master’s students from the Department of City and Regional Planning. Professor Castells is a leading expert worldwide in the social sciences. He is Professor Emeritus of City and Regional Planning and of Sociology at UC Berkeley, where he taught from 1979 to 2003. The Spanish sociologist is a prominent scholar globalization, and information society, and currently holds the Wallis Annenberg Chair in Communication Technology and Society at the University of Southern California. The round-table discussion coincided with Professor Castells’s lecture at the College of Environmental Design entitled “Space of Flows and Space of Places in Networked Social Movements” and follows the publication of his most recent book, Networks of Outrage and Hope (2012). Both the lecture and the discussion focused on Castells’s most recent work on new forms of social movements and protests that are erupting across the world, from the Arab uprisings to the indignadas of Spain and the Occupy Wall Street movement in the United States. Jake Wegmann served as the discussion moderator.

2020Co-Authors: Esteban Torres CastanosAbstract:In this article we propose to initiate an exploratory dialogue with the theoretical production of Manuel Castells, focused on the process of collective consumption, assuming that this perspective offers updated clues to think the media as public or collective services, and to explore their relationship with the processes of appropriation and social change in South America, in the context of the global financial crisis and of the state intervention in the economy. The reflections presented here are related to the program of study of the theory of social change by Manuel Castells, in relation to information technology and new media, and the current efforts of modern renewal of critical social theory of the media.

Me ocupo de exponer y analizar las distintas modalidades que adquiere tal vinculo, las transformaciones principales que experimenta, asi como la apropiacion que efectua el autor de las obras de Max Weber y de Michel Foucault. Tal ejercicio analitico se va articulando con los debates contemporaneos de referencia en la materia. El trabajo permite descubrir, entre otros aspectos, el modo en que los trazos normativos centrales de la vision sociologica del Estado de Castells, edificados en gran medida a partir del rechazo al Estado-nacion, inspiran la formulacion del vinculo estudiado.

En la presente investigacion me ocupo de analizar dicha formula haciendo hincapie en los problemas que acarrea la diferenciacion entre ambos elementos, asi como el reduccionismo que conlleva la restriccion de los mecanismos de formacion de poder a las variables mencionadas. El estudio permite poner en cuestion la tesis de la complementariedad de las fuentes de poder, tal como la entiende Castells. la perdida del control de la informacion y la comunicacion apuntes sobre una tesis de Manuel Castells
Acta Sociologica, 2013Co-Authors: Esteban Torres CastanosAbstract:Since 1983 Manuel Castells frequently holds that information and communication control was and is the foundation or the source of power, and particularly state power. In this article we refer to that formula in general terms, and then we focus on a central thesis the spanish sociologist proposes since 1997, which indicates that in the current situation there is an irrepressible tendency towards the loss of information and communication control. The principle of the end of the mentioned control is for our author most probably the main support of his thesis about the definitive decline of nation states power. Among other aspects, the research allows us to discover some features of the anti-state view Castells displays in his social theory. This product is inscribed on the research about the development of Manuel Castells’ concept of power during the period 1967-2009, and in more general terms in current efforts to revalue modern social theory and to recover the question of power as a general interpretation key.
