  • tyre road noise damping characteristics using Nomographs and fundamental vibroacoustical relationships
Transportation Research Part D-transport and Environment, 2016
    Co-Authors: Krishna Prapoorna Biligiri
    Abstract:

Several studies have successfully developed laboratory and field measurement techniques to estimate tyre/road noise damping characteristics. However, laboratory–field noise correlations of pavement types in the form of Nomographs is essential to cognize the pavements’ acoustical properties from a practical perspective. A toolkit that readily provides field tyre/road noise intensity of different pavement materials is needed. Thus, the main objective of this study was to develop Nomographs with relationships for tyre/road noise versus pavement materials’ viscoelastic–vibroacoustical properties. Isothermal and isochronal Nomographs of phase angle–tyre/road noise as toolkits were developed based upon well-established phase angle and noise intensities typical of mixtures, making the nomograph correlations very authentic, realistic, and novel along with benefit to predict tyre/road noise at any desired temperature and traffic speed (or frequency) combination. This study is envisaged to benefit in the discernment of road materials’ damping capabilities from vibroacoustical and field noise–viscoelastic relation aspects.

  • Nomographs for the optimum solar pond driven libr znbr2 ch3oh absorption refrigeration system
International Journal of Energy Research, 1992
    Co-Authors: K A Antonopoulos, E D Rogdakis
    Abstract:

The paper presents a procedure for the calculation of an absorption-refrigeration plant that uses an LiBr/ZnBr2/CH3OH solution and is driven throughout the year by heat received from a solar pond. The calculations for the solar pond are based on a finite-difference solution of the transient heat conduction differential equation during the year, and the operation of the refrigeration unit is simulated by the use of functions describing the thermodynamic behaviour of the working medium. On the basis of the procedure devised, correlations and Nomographs are developed that describe the seasonally optimum operation of the proposed composite system. The Nomographs may be employed for a first estimation in the design of such systems.

  • Teaching Planetary Gear Trains with the Aid of Nomographs
    Advances in Mechanical Engineering, 2013
    Co-Authors: Essam L. Esmail
    Abstract:

Planetary gear trains (PGTs) are introduced to undergraduate mechanical engineering students in the course of Theory of Machines. The complexity of the traditional methods for analyzing PGTs has kept many from becoming familiar with the capability of PGTs in mechanisms and machine design. In this paper a unified general formulation for simultaneously visualizing velocities, torques, and power flow through a train is presented on a single nomograph. Therefore, the increasing complex mechanical systems, such as automotive transmissions, are much easier to understand. Nomographs of Fundamental Gear Entities (FGEs) are constructed based on the Nomographs of their fundamental circuits, without specifying the exact gear dimensions. They are then unified in one system nomograph. Nomographs are promising to provide designers with an efficient tool for the design of geared mechanisms.

  • Nomographs for Kinematics, Statics and Power Flow Analysis of Epicyclic Gear Trains
Volume 13: New Developments in Simulation Methods and Software for Engineering Applications; Safety Engineering Risk Analysis and Reliability Methods;, 2009
    Co-Authors: Essam L. Esmail, Hamed A. Hussen
    Abstract:

A new methodology for constructing multi-axes Nomographs is developed. Using this methodology, a unified general formulation for computing velocities and torques of any epicyclic-type transmission train is presented. To demonstrate and apply the new technique, Ravigneaux automatic transmission is used to show how the velocities, the torques and the power flow through the train can be simultaneously visualized on a single nomograph. The present methodology is judged to be more efficient than other methods and than the three-ax nomograph methodology. Using this methodology an innovative design of two-input transmission with only one electric motor/generator (MG) and without any rotating clutches is presented. The proposed design provides some of the benefits and flexibility of a power-split design by using the conventionally available Ravigneaux gear train in a simpler mechanical layout which makes the design compact, mechanically simple, and operationally flexible.Copyright © 2009 by ASME

  • Nomographs for Enumeration of Clutching Sequences Associated With Epicyclic-Type Automatic Transmission Mechanisms
    Volume 17: Transportation Systems, 2008
    Co-Authors: Essam L. Esmail
    Abstract:

A new methodology for the enumeration of feasible clutching sequences for a given epicyclic gear mechanism (EGM) is presented using the kinematic Nomographs of epicyclic-type transmission mechanisms. From such Nomographs, the kinematic characteristics of an epicyclic gear mechanism can be expressed in terms of the gear ratios of its gear pairs. From a single nomograph, the angular velocities for all of the coaxial links can be estimated and compared directly without specifying the exact size of each gear. In addition, the angular velocities can be arranged in a descending sequence without using complicated artificial intelligence or algorithmic techniques. Then, a procedure for the enumeration of feasible clutching sequences associated with a transmission mechanism composed of two or more fundamental gear entities (FGEs) is developed. The reliability of the methodology is established by applying it to two transmission gear trains for which solutions are either fully or partially available in the literature. In the process, an incomplete in the results reported in previous literature is brought to light. And the root cause of this incompleteness is explored. The present methodology is judged to be more efficient for enumeration of all feasible clutching sequences of an EGM.Copyright © 2008 by ASME
