application of statistical methods for predicting uniaxial compressive strength of limestone rocks using Nondestructive Tests
Acta Geotechnica, 2017Co-Authors: Abdolazim AzimianAbstract:Uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of an intact rock is an important geotechnical parameter for engineering applications. Using standard laboratory Tests to determine UCS is a difficult, expensive and time-consuming task. The main purpose of this study is to develop a general model for predicting UCS of limestone samples and to investigate the relationships among UCS, Schmidt hammer rebound and P-wave velocity (V P). For this reason, some samples of limestone rocks were collected from the southwestern Iran. In order to evaluate a correlation, the measured and predicted values were examined utilizing simple and multivariate regression techniques. In order to check the performance of the proposed equation, coefficient of determination (R 2), root-mean-square error, mean absolute percentage error, variance accounts for (VAF %), Akaike Information Criterion and performance index were determined. The results showed that the proposed equation by multivariate regression could be applied effectively to predict UCS from its combinations, i.e., ultrasonic pulse velocity and Schmidt hammer hardness. The results also showed that considering high prediction performance of the models developed, they can be used to perform preliminary stages of rock engineering assessments. It was evident that such prediction studies not only provide some practical tools but also contribute to better understanding of the main controlling index parameters of UCS of rocks.

Nondestructive Tests for determining compressive soil strength of cement stabilized soils
Transportation Research Record, 1991Co-Authors: P A Okamoto, Brian T Bock, Peter J NussbaumAbstract:Nondestructive impact hammer Tests were made on cement-stabilized noncohesive soils using a Clegg impact soil tester and a Proceq Type PT test hammer. Compressive strength of the stabilized soils varied from about 5 to 1,000 psi. Curves correlating impact hammer values with cement-stabilized soil compressive strength were developed for each of the test hammers. These curves can be used to correlate in situ Nondestructive test values with the compressive strength of cement-stabilized soils.

The relation between firmness testing and the ripening process of fresh tomato cultivars treated with Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) 220 lL/L was analyzed. Determinations of firmness with Nondestructive acoustic impact and destructive puncture Magness–Taylor Tests were compared. It was found that the Magness–Taylor test carried out on whole tomatoes are mainly sensitive to turgor reduction while the acoustic impact test was found to be mostly related to the global firmness variation and to the ripening of tomatoes. The firmness data was correlated with color changes (L * , a * /b * and hue angle) and CO2 and C2H4 emissions. The results indicate that MeJA treatment has minimal effects on the ripening process

alexandria engineering journal, 2012Co-Authors: Ali A Aliabdo, Abd Elmoaty Abd M ElmoatyAbstract:Abstract This study aims to investigate the relationships between Schmidt hardness rebound number (RN) and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) versus compressive strength (fc) of stones and bricks. Four types of rocks (marble, pink lime stone, white lime stone and basalt) and two types of burned bricks and lime-sand bricks were studied. Linear and non-linear models were proposed. High correlations were found between RN and UPV versus compressive strength. Validation of proposed models was assessed using other specimens for each material. Linear models for each material showed good correlations than non-linear models. General model between RN and compressive strength of tested stones and bricks showed a high correlation with regression coefficient R 2 value of 0.94. Estimation of compressive strength for the studied stones and bricks using their rebound number and ultrasonic pulse velocity in a combined method was generally more reliable than using rebound number or ultrasonic pulse velocity only.
