  • Occupational stress in the South African police service
SA Journal of Industrial Psychology, 2006
    Co-Authors: Jaco Pienaar, Sebastiaan Rothmann
    Abstract:

Policing has been described as a stressful occupation. The objectives of this study were to develop and validate a measure that could be used by the South African Police Service (SAPS) to identify the frequency and intensity of occupational stressors and to assess the differences between the stressors for race, rank and gender groups. A crosssectional survey design was used. Stratified random samples (N = 2145) were taken of police members of nine provinces in South Africa. The Police Stress Inventory was developed as a measuring instrument. Three internally consistent factors were extracted through principal component analysis with a direct Oblimin Rotation. These factors were labelled Job Demands, Lack of Support and Crime-related Stressors. The most important stressors identified were other officers not doing their job, inadequate or poor quality equipment, inadequate salaries, and seeing criminals go free. Analysis of variance showed differences in stressors for rank, race and gender groups.

  • Expectations of, and satisfaction with, the South African police service in the North West Province
Policing: An International Journal of Police Strategies & Management, 2006
    Co-Authors: Sebastiaan Rothmann
    Abstract:

Purpose – The purpose of this paper was to assess the expectations of policing of citizens and police members in South Africa and to determine citizens' perceptions of the police.Design/methodology/approach – The paper shows a cross‐sectional survey design was used. Stratified random samples of both the police (N=677) and the community (N=2,153) were taken in the North West Province of South Africa. The measuring battery for the community contained two sections, namely a section with biographical questions and items about contact with the police, neighbourhood concerns and confidence in the police, and a section about expectations. The measuring battery for police members also included two sections, namely a section with biographical questions, and a section with questions about their (police members') perceptions of the community's expectations.Findings – The paper finds that regarding community expectations, a principal component analysis with a direct Oblimin Rotation resulted in four internally consis...

  • Psychometric assessment of the "child surgery worries questionnaire" among Portuguese children
    The European health psychologist, 2017
Co-Authors: Sara Fernandes, Patrícia Arriaga, Francisco Esteves, Helena Carvalho
    Abstract:

Worries are common in surgical patients, especially in children. The present study analyzed the factor structure and the psychometric properties of the Child Surgery Worries Questionnaire (CSWQ) in a Portuguese sample (n= 490 children). Exploratory factor analysis, conducted via principal axis factoring with Oblimin Rotation provided evidence for a four-factor structure of the 21 item questionnaire. A confirmatory factor analysis was also conducted, showing the good fit of this solution. The CSWQ Portuguese version had one more subscale compared to the original Spanish version. The analysis of the children's trait anxiety found convergent validity with the CSWQ. Females also scored higher worries than males on all subscales. Psychometric properties of this revised version of the CSWQ provided support for use with young children, showing an important value for healthcare practice in clinical and nonclinical settings

  • Psychometric Assessment of the Child Surgery Worries Questionnaire Among Portuguese Children.
Journal of clinical psychology in medical settings, 2017
Co-Authors: Sara Fernandes, Patrícia Arriaga, Helena Carvalho, Francisco Esteves
    Abstract:

Worries are common in surgical patients, especially in children. The present study analyzed the factor structure and the psychometric properties of a Portuguese version of the Child Surgery Worries Questionnaire (CSWQ-P) in a Portuguese sample of 490 children. Exploratory factor analysis, conducted via principal axis factoring with Oblimin Rotation, provided evidence for a four-factor structure of the 21 item questionnaire. A confirmatory factor analysis was also conducted, showing the good fit of this solution. The CSWQ-P proved to have one more subscale than the original Spanish version CSWQ. Correlations with the children's trait anxiety provided evidence of convergent validity for the CSWQ-P. Females also scored higher on worries than males on all subscales. Psychometric properties of this revised version of the CSWQ provided support for use with young children, and indicate the CSWQ-P has value for use in healthcare practice and in clinical research.

  • Development of population‐based resilience measures in the primary school setting
    Health Education, 2007
Co-Authors: Jing Sun, Donald Edwin Stewart
    Abstract:

Purpose – The purpose of the population‐based study in the paper is to report on progress in formulating instruments to measure children's resilience and associated protective factors in family, primary school and community contexts.Design/methodology/approach – In this paper a total of 2,794 students, 1,558 parents/caregivers, and 465 staff were surveyed in October 2003. A cross‐sectional research method was used for the data collection. Three surveys (student survey, parent/caregiver survey, and staff survey) were developed and modified to measure student resilience and associated protective factors. Exploratory factor analysis with Oblimin Rotation and confirmatory factor analysis were used to analyse the reliability and validity of the scales of the three surveys.Findings – The surveys in this paper find good construct validity and internal consistency for the social support scale of parent/caregiver survey, which had been modified from previous studies. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated a goodne...
