effective Octadecylamine system for nanocrystal synthesis
Inorganic Chemistry, 2011Co-Authors: Dingsheng WangAbstract:New chemical reactions and synthetic systems are of key importance for materials fabrication. In this work, we reported a facile and effective Octadecylamine (ODA) synthetic system for various nanocrystals including metals, mixed metal oxides, metal/metal oxide heterostructured nanocrystals, intermetallics, and alloys. We found that the products were mainly determined by metal ions used in our synthetic system: noble metal ions led to the formation of metals; two kinds of non-noble metal ions led to the formation of mixed metal oxides; silver ions and non-noble metal ions led to the formation of metal/metal oxide heterostructured nanocrystals; non-noble metal ions and noble metal (excluding Ag) ions led to the formation of intermetallics and alloys. The difference was attributed to different ability to attract electrons from ODA solvent among these metal ions. This effective system provides a general strategy for various nanocrystals which would find potential applications in many significant fields.

ultrathin au ag bimetallic nanowires with coulomb blockade effects
Chemical Communications, 2011Co-Authors: Xun Hong, Dingsheng Wang, Rong Yu, Lin He, Qing Peng, Yadong LiAbstract:Ultrathin Au/Ag bimetallic nanowires with remarkable Coulomb blockade effects were synthesized using Octadecylamine as both a solvent and a surfactant. It is believed that the growth mechanism of the Au/Ag bimetallic ultrathin nanowires includes the noble-metal-induced reduction, the oriented attachment and the wire–wire fusion.

direct thermal decomposition of metal nitrates in Octadecylamine to metal oxide nanocrystals
Chemistry: A European Journal, 2008Co-Authors: Dingsheng Wang, Qing Peng, Shaoyan Zhang, Jun Chen, Yadong LiAbstract:We have developed a method for the synthesis of metal oxide nanocrystals with controllable shape and size, which is based on the direct thermal decomposition of metal nitrates in Octadecylamine. Mn3O4 nanoparticles and nanorods with different lengths were synthesized by using manganese nitrate as the decomposition material. Other metal oxide nanocrystals such as NiO, ZnO, CeO2, CoO, and Co3O4 were also prepared by this method. These nanocrystals were then assembled into 3D colloidal spheres by a surfactant-assisted self-assembly process. Subsequently, calcination was carried out to remove the surfactants to obtain mesoporous metal oxides, which show large pores, good crystallization, thermally stable pore mesostructures, and potential applications in various fields, especially in catalysis and lithium-ion batteries.

functionalized gold nanoparticles Octadecylamine hybrid langmuir blodgett film for enzyme sensor
Electroanalysis, 2009Co-Authors: Zimple Matharu, Pratibha Pandey, Madhurima Pandey, Vinay Gupta, B D MalhotraAbstract:Mediator free enzyme sensor has been fabricated by covalently immobilizing cholesterol oxidase (ChOx) onto 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid functionalized gold nanoparticles (MUDA-AuNPs) – Octadecylamine (ODA) hybrid Langmuir–Blodgett film. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies reveal that MUDA-AuNP/ODA LB film has good affinity for ChOx and provides favorable microenvironment for direct electron transfer between enzyme and electrode. Interference free estimation of cholesterol has been realized at 0.3 V with linear range from 25 to 500 mg/dL, detection limit of 23.38 mg/dL, sensitivity of 1.085 μA mM−1 and response time of 20 s at pH 7.0.

functionalization and dissolution of nitric acid treated single walled carbon nanotubes
Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2009Co-Authors: Kimberly Worsley, Irina Kalinina, Elena Bekyarova, Robert C HaddonAbstract:We report an investigation of the nature and chemical functionalization of nitric acid treated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). SWNTs washed with diluted sodium hydroxide solutions were characterized by near-IR, mid-IR, and Raman spectroscopy as well as TEM, and the remaining carboxylic acid content was determined to assess the effect of base washing on the removal of carboxylated carbon fractions, which are generated by the nitric acid treatment. It was found that even after exhaustive washing with aqueous base the purified SWNTs contain carboxylic acid groups in sufficient quantity to prepare high quality soluble SWNT materials by covalent functionalization with Octadecylamine.

solution properties of single walled carbon nanotubes
Science, 1998Co-Authors: Jian Chen, Mark A Hamon, Hui Hu, Yongsheng Chen, Apparao M Rao, P C Eklund, Robert C HaddonAbstract:Naked metallic and semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were dissolved in organic solutions by derivatization with thionychloride and Octadecylamine. Both ionic (charge transfer) and covalent solution-phase chemistry with concomitant modulation of the SWNT band structure were demonstrated. Solution-phase near-infrared spectroscopy was used to study the effects of chemical modifications on the band gaps of the SWNTs. Reaction of soluble SWNTs with dichlorocarbene led to functionalization of the nanotube walls.

synthesis and characterization of multi walled carbon nanotubes modified with Octadecylamine and polyethylene glycol
Arabian Journal of Chemistry, 2017Co-Authors: Mohamed Abdel Salam, Robert BurkAbstract:Abstract Chemical modification of MWCNTs via oxidation followed by side wall functionalization using polyethylene glycol (PEG) and Octadecylamine (ODA); separately, was studied. Different characterization techniques such as FTIR spectrometry, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and solubility in different solvents were performed for the oxidized MWCNTs, MWCNTs–PEG and MWCNTs–ODA. The characterization techniques proved the presence of the functional groups on the MWCNT surface. Thermal gravimetric analysis revealed that nearly 16% (by weight) of the MWCNTs were functionalized with PEG and 39% (by weight) was functionalized with ODA.
