  • Skin lesions due to Okra (Hibiscus esculentus L.): proteolytic activity and allergenicity of Okra.
    Contact dermatitis, 1992
Co-Authors: Fumi Manda, K Tadera, Kohji Aoyama
    Abstract:

The present report describes experimental studies on the proteolytic activity of the secretion on the surface of Okra pods and the allergenicity of Okra components, to clarify the etiology of skin lesions due to Okra. Proteolytic activity was detected on the surface of immature Okra pods and seemed to be sufficient to cause the skin lesions. Further, in vivo, intradermal injection of the enzyme solution prepared from immature Okra pods led to increased capillary permeability in guinea pigs, in contrast to heated preparations. The fraction purified by preparative paper chromatography from an ethyl acetate extract of Okra pods showed moderate allergenicity in the guinea pig maximization test. The present experimental evidence supports our suggestions from previous surveys that the proteolytic enzyme of Okra may be responsible for development of skin lesions, and that allergic contact dermatitis may also play a part in addition to irritant contact dermatitis.

  • Skin lesions due to Okra(Hibiscus esculentus L.). A field survey of skin lesions in workers cultivating Okra.
JOURNAL OF THE JAPANESE ASSOCIATION OF RURAL MEDICINE, 1991
    Co-Authors: Fumi Manda
    Abstract:

The outbreak of skin lesions in workers cultivating Okra (Hibiscus esculentus L.) was studied by a field survey. Questionnaire and physical examinations including patch tests with preparations of Okra pods were carried out.Out of 89 workers, 48 (53.9%) reported to have history of skin lesions. The sites of skin lesions were mainly arms (43.8%), dorsal regions of hands (35.4%), neck (33.3%), fingers and fingertips (each 29.2%). Concerning the symptoms of the skin lesions, itching (85.4%) and flare (45.8%) were dominant on picking work, and vanishing fingerprints and fissures on fingers on packing work. These clinical signs appeared shortly after the workers set to work without protective means.Positive reactions of the patch tests with preparations of Okra pods were found in 11 out of 89 Okra workers (12.4%). The positive rate in non-Okra workers was 3.4%. The results indicated that skin lesions due to Okra were caused by primary irritation and allergic sensitization.

  • APLIKASI BEBERAPA DOSIS TRICHOKOMPOS ECENG GONDOK TERHADAP PERTUMBUHAN DAN HASIL TANAMAN Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus l. Moench)
    2019
    Co-Authors: Afwi Zusicho - Pratama
    Abstract:

'Orissa Journal of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery', 2020
Co-Authors: Monica Silva, Baskara Medha, Herlina Ninuk
