  • what a difference your e mail makes effects of informal e mail addresses in Online Resume screening
Cyberpsychology Behavior and Social Networking, 2015
Co-Authors: Marlies Van Toorenburg, Janneke K Oostrom, Thomas V Pollet
    Abstract:

Resumes are screened rapidly, with some reports stating that recruiters form their impressions within 10 seconds. Certain Resume characteristics can have a significant impact on the snap judgments these recruiters make. The main goal of the present study was to examine the effect of the e-mail address (formal vs. informal) used in a Resume on the hirability perceptions formed by professional recruiters (N=73). In addition, the effect of the e-mail address on hirability perceptions was compared to the effects of spelling errors and typeface. Participants assessed the cognitive ability, personality, and the hirability of six fictitious applicants for the job of an HR specialist. The hirability ratings for the Resumes with informal e-mail addresses were significantly lower than the hirability ratings for Resumes that featured a formal e-mail address. The effect of e-mail address was as strong as the effect of spelling errors and stronger than that of typeface. The effect of e-mail address on hirability was mediated by perceptions of conscientiousness and honesty-humility. This study among actual recruiters shows for the first time that the choice of the e-mail address used on a Resume might make a real difference.

  • XML Based Online Resume Bank
    2001
    Co-Authors: Woon Ching Yin
    Abstract:

Web-based recruiting site brings employers and employees together in a simple and accessible way, helping make the recruiting process more transparent for all involved. For job hunters, it is as simple as uploading a copy of their Resumes to one of these sites which maintain enormous databases of Resumes for potential employers to search by keyword. With effective interoperability, XML is emerging as an important meta-language in electronic commerce. This project applies the characteristics of XML to construct a meta-language for job application Resume. The meta-language is intended as a common file format for staffing exchange in Malaysia. Apart from the meta-language, an XML based Online Resume Bank prototype has also been developed. It allows users to save, retrieve and query the Resume information stored in the XML file.

    Canadian journal of communication, 2006
Co-Authors: Grace Chung, Sara M Grimes
    Abstract:

Abstract: This paper explores privacy issues in relation to the growing prominence of marketing research and data mining in websites for children. Whereas increasing protection is given to individuals’ personal information, little attention is paid to information that is aggregated, electronically scanned, and sorted — despite the fact that aggregate information is often highly valued by the marketing industry. The authors review current trends in Internet market research, data mining techniques, policy initiatives, and the contents of some of the most highly frequented children’s game sites. The paper demonstrates how common data mining practices constitute a threat to children’s emerging rights Online.
