  • aair a leading Open Access Journal in allergy asthma and immunology research
Allergy Asthma and Immunology Research, 2009
    Co-Authors: Choonsik Park
    Abstract:

This is the inaugural issue of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Research (AAIR), published under the auspices of the Korean Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Clinical Immunology and the Korean Academy of Pediatric Allergy and Respiratory Disease. This issue contains three reviews by world-famous professors, three original articles, and two case reports. First, I would like to briefly outline the histories of the Academies sponsoring the publication. The Korean Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Clinical Immunology was founded in 1972 and has published its official Journal, the Korean Journal of Asthma, Allergy and Clinical Immunology, quarterly since 1981. As of 2008, its membership comprised about 1000 physicians, including pediatricians, rhinologists, and dermatologists. It holds two main congresses each year, in spring and autumn, at which more than 200 abstracts are presented. Annually, the Academy has published eight editorials, 20 original articles, eight reviews, and 10 case reports in its official Journal. The Korean Academy of Pediatric Allergy and Respiratory Disease was founded in 1987 and has published its official Journal, the Pediatric Allergy and Respiratory Disease(Korea), since that time. The Academy consisted of 1400 pediatricians in 2008. Like its partner Academy, this Academy also holds congresses each spring and autumn, with more than 200 abstracts being presented every year, and has published eight editorials, 20 original articles, eight reviews, and 10 case reports in its official Journal. Since their founding, the two Academies have sponsored several international congresses and symposia on allergy, immunology, and pediatric respiratory diseases. The Korean-Japan Joint Allergy symposium has been held biannually since the founding of the Korean Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Many of international meetings have been successfully hosted in Korea. At international and domestic symposia, members of both Academies have presented many excellent abstracts, which have been published in program booklets. Major contributions by Academy members have been published in the Korean Journal of Asthma, Allergy and Clinical Immunology and the Pediatric Allergy and Respiratory Disease(Korea). However, as the official Journals of both Academies are written in Korean and distributed domestically, the study results of our members reach few readers outside Korea. To promote international communication by their members, the two Academies have decided to publish an official Journal in English, and I was appointed Editor-in-Chief. Last December, to prepare for the publication of AAIR, the Academies established a committee composed of Drs. Choon Shil Lee, Hae-Sim Park, Jae Won Oh, Soo-Jong Hong, You Sook Cho, Jung Won Park, and Woo Kyung Kim. AAIR will be published four times annually and will contain timely clinical, basic science, and experimental research papers; instructive case reports; and detailed examinations of state-of-the-art equipment and techniques useful for allergists, immunologists, and other physicians who deal with the clinical manifestations of allergies and pediatric respiratory disease. Original articles will cover topics such as allergy, immunology, respirology, and occupational allergy, and will include studies on allergens, the environment, and the latest therapies and treatment programs. AAIR will also publish solicited review articles on subjects of topical interest to researchers and physicians in the fields of allergy and immunology. We are keen to develop AAIR as a leading Journal in asthma, allergy, and clinical immunology. To enhance its academic quality, we have invited world-class professors and researchers to join the AAIR Advisory and Editorial Boards. We have also introduced internal enhancements involving board structure, office processing, manuscript centralization, impact factor registration, internal auditing, outcome review, and public relations, including more dynamic interactions with our publisher. Preparing the first issue of AAIR has been an enjoyable and rewarding experience, which was greatly enhanced by the contributions of an outstanding team that included the preparatory committee for publication, Advisory Board members, Associate Editors, Editorial Board members, and a loyal and hard-working Editorial Office staff. It will be a privilege for me to serve as Editor-in-Chief of AAIR, and I am proud of what we have achieved collectively to date. On behalf of all the Editors, I look forward to excellent support and assistance from members of the Korean Academies as well as international allergy and clinical immunology societies.

  • biopsychosocial medicine a new Open Access Journal
    Biopsychosocial Medicine, 2007
    Co-Authors: Yoshihide Nakai
    Abstract:

We are pleased to announce the launch of BioPsychoSocial Medicine [1], an Open Access, online, peer reviewed Journal that considers articles on all aspects of the inter-relationships between the biological, psychological, social, and behavioral factors of health and illness. BioPsychoSocial Medicine is the official Journal of The Japanese Society of Psychosomatic Medicine [2], which was established on November 30, 1959, and now has over three thousand seven hundred members. The Japanese Society of Psychosomatic Medicine is an interdisciplinary academic society consisting mainly of physicians, gynecologists, psychiatrists, pediatricians, dermatologists, dentists, researchers of basic medical science, and psychologists. The society publishes a monthly Japanese language academic Journal, the Japanese Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine [3], the latest issue being Vol. 46 No. 12. With the support of psychiatrists, Japanese psychosomatic medicine specialists have aspired to promote the development of clinical medicine, education, and research into biopsychosocial medical science targeting the physical disorders of each branch. Our members' wishes to transmit their results to the world have been realized through the publication of an English language Journal, BioPsychoSocial Medicine. We welcome the contributions of psychosomatic medicine scientists from around the world, as well as from those in Japan, and have high expectations that by publishing high-quality research papers on biopsychosocial medical science and by providing opportunities for communication among the psychosomatic medicine scientists of the world, BioPsychoSocial Medicine will become an important Journal in its field. We look forward to receiving your submissions.

  • Open Access Journal publishing: the views of some of the world's senior authors
    J DOC, 2005
    Co-Authors: Ian Rowlands
    Abstract:

Purpose - The main aims of the survey were to determine: the volume of Open Access (OA) publishing; what the attitudes of authors to publishing in OA Journals were; and what authors felt were the implications of OA publishing.Design/methodology/approach - The questionnaire survey was administered on behalf of Ciber by NOP and the sample derived from mailing lists supplied by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI (R)). Nearly, 4,000 authors responded.Findings - The detailed results of a major survey of the views and experiences of nearly 4,000 senior authors in regard to OA publishing. A number of statistical analyses were employed to drill down into the data to obtain an understanding of the figures. Views were divided sharply along subject and geographical lines, demonstrating the need to survey large and robust samples of authors.Research limitations/implications - A snapshot study which while providing robust data requires a follow-up study to monitor opinion shifts in this fast-changing area.Practical implications - Highlights the knowledge gap that exists between authors and publishers.Originality/value - One of the biggest, if not the biggest, author survey conducted into scholarly publishing and OA publishing.

  • Open Access Journal policies a systematic analysis of radiology Journals
Journal of The American College of Radiology, 2017
Co-Authors: Anand K Narayan, Katie Lobner, Jan Fritz
    Abstract:

Abstract Objective The Open Access movement has pushed for greater Access to scientific knowledge by expanding Access to scientific Journal articles. There is limited information about the extent to which Open Access policies have been adopted by radiology Journals. We performed a systematic analysis to ascertain the proportion of radiology Journals with Open Access options. Materials and Methods A search was performed with the assistance of a clinical informationist. Full and mixed English-language diagnostic and interventional radiology Web of Science Journals (impact factors > 1.0) were included. Nuclear medicine, radiation oncology, physics, and solicitation-only Journals were excluded. Primary outcome was Open Access option (yes or no) with additional outcomes including presence or absence of embargo, complete or partial copyright transfer, publication fees, and self-archiving policies. Secondary outcomes included Journal citations, Journal impact factors, immediacy, Eigenfactor, and article influence scores. Independent double readings were performed with differences resolved by consensus, supplemented by contacting editorial staff at each Journal. Results In all, 125 Journals were identified; review yielded 49 Journals (39%, mean impact factor of 2.61). Thirty-six of the Journals had Open Access options (73.4%), and four Journals were exclusively Open Access (8.2%). Twelve-month embargoes were most commonly cited (90.6%) with 28.6% of Journals stating that they did not require a complete transfer of copyright. Prices for Open Access options ranged from $750 to $4,000 (median $3,000). No statistically significant differences were found in Journal impact measures comparing Journals with Open Access options to Journals without Open Access options. Conclusions Diagnostic and interventional radiology Journals have widely adopted Open Access options with a few radiology Journals being exclusively Open Access.
