Investigating a homogeneous culture for Operating Personnel working in domestic nuclear power plants
Reliability Engineering & System Safety, 2016Co-Authors: Jinkyun ParkAbstract:Abstract It is evident that a cultural difference (or variability) is one of the determinants affecting the performance of human operators. This means that, from the point of human reliability analysis (HRA), the effect of the cultural variability on the performance of human operators should be carefully scrutinized. In this regard, the cultural profile of Operating Personnel working in two domestic nuclear power plants (NPPs) were collected and compared based on the Hofstede's 11 cultural dimensions. However, as the coverage of this comparison is not sufficient to manifest the existence of a homogenous culture, cultural data were additionally collected from 52 Operating Personnel working in domestic NPPs, of which the working environments were distinctive from those of previous NPPs. As a result, it was observed that the cultural profiles of Operating Personnel working in different NPPs closely resemble each other except in a few cultural dimensions. This result suggests that, Operating Personnel at least working in domestic NPPs, largely share a homogeneous culture. Accordingly, although more extensive analyses are required to validate the results of this study, it is promising that the cultural variability of Operating Personnel could be soundly characterized if they share a homogeneous culture.

Survey on the hearing loss of Operating Personnel in noisy working environment in an oil company
Modern Preventive Medicine, 2014Co-Authors: Qian Xue-quaAbstract:Objective This research was designed to investigate and analyze the hearing loss status of Operating Personnel in noisy working environment in an oil company. Methods One thousand two hundred and eleven workers working in a highly noisy environment in an oil company were surveyed(exposed group) in comparison with 557 staffs working under environment without noise exposure(control group) in the same company. The two groups of workers were given pure tone hearing test. And the pure tone hearing test results was analyzed in combination with the noise monitoring data. Results Hearing loss was detected in 31.2% of the workers in the noise exposure group, and the percentage was significantly higher(P0.01) than that in the control group. In the exposure group, the detection rate of high-frequency hearing loss was also significantly higher than the speech frequency hearing loss(P0.01); hearing loss detection rate between male and female workers was not significantly different(P0.05); hearing damage detection rate increased with longer noise exposure, and higher noise intensity, with a positive correlation(rs=0.261-0.416, P0.01).Conclusion The Operating Personnel in noisy working environment in oil companies suffered higher rate of hearing damage. Longer noise exposure and greater noise intensity will lead to higher detection rate of hearing loss.
