A Model Repository Description Language - MRDL

However, there are still gaps in existing modeling languages and/or formalisms dedicated to define model repositories and the way how to reuse them in the automation of software development. Thus, there is a strong requirement for defining a model repository description language not only as a modeling approach, but also as a suitable instrument to support system and software engineers in the activity of search and retrieval of appropriate models beyond keyword-based search. Moreover, modeling approaches allow using tools for the specification and the exploitation of the designed artifacts (e.g. analysis and evaluation). The goal of this paper is to advance the state of the art in model repository description for software and systems engineering. In particular, we have designed a flexible and extensible modeling language, by means of an OMG style metamodel, to specify model repositories for modeling artifacts, and we have defined an Operational Architecture for development tools. In particular, we show the feasibility of our own approach by reporting some preliminary prototype providing a model-based repository of security and dependability (S&D) pattern models.

Architecture for comparing alternative designs of a tactical naval command and control system using discrete event simulation

The system Architecture methodology started with describing an Operational concept, moved to the co-development of the functional Architecture and the physical Architecture, and concluded with the development of a notional Operational Architecture. A portion of the contact prosecution process for a Surface Action Group (SAG) involved in securing local sea control was modeled in the discrete-event simulation software Arena®, and this effort is the focus of this paper. Simulations for both potential alternative designs were conducted. Finally, a comparison of the simulation results demonstrated the feasibility of the developed Architecture framework to compare alternative designs of the C2 system.

IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering, 2012Co-Authors: Mengchu ZhouAbstract:Because of residency time constraints and activity time variation of cluster tools, it is very difficult to operate such integrated semiconductor manufacturing equipment. This paper addresses their real-time Operational issues. To characterize their schedulability and achieve the minimum cycle time at their steady-state operation, Petri net (PN) models are developed to describe them, which are very compact, and independent of wafer flow pattern. It is due to the proposed models that scheduling cluster tools is converted into determining robot wait times. A two-level Operational Architecture is proposed to include an offline periodic schedule and real-time controller. The former determines when a wafer should be placed into a process module for processing, while the latter regulates robot wait times online in order to reduce the effect of activity time variation on wafer sojourn times in process modules. Therefore, the system can adapt to activity time variation. A cluster tool derived as a not-always-schedulable system by the existing methods is shown to be always-schedulable by using the proposed novel method.

These technologies have made a profound impact on the Army's tactical command and control (C/sup 2/) processes, especially at division and below. This paper presents a computer simulation model to support the reengineering of the United States Army's staff organization at division and below for information operations. The simulation model under development will provide force planners with a tool for methodically conducting comparative analyses of specific alternatives for reengineering tactical level Army staffs to improve efficiency and effectiveness of staff work related to information operations.
