Als neu werden beschrieben: Opius citripes, O. citronipus, O. imperator, O. servus, O. signipes, O. tulcanensis, O. virtuosus und O. vocatus. Optus chilensis de Santis wird redeskribiert. Wichtige morphologische Einzelheiten der neubeschriebenen oder wiederbeschriebenen Arten sind abgebildet. Summary Taxonomy of Neotropic Species of Opius pendulus group (Hym., Bracon.) The pendulus-group of the genus Opius Wesmael is defined by the combination of following characters: dorsal fovea of mesonotum absent, precoxal furrow smooth or completely absent, mouth open, propodeum smooth, abdominal tergites beginning from 2nd without sculpture. A key for identification of 20 species of the neotropical region is proposed. Opius citripes, O. citronipus, O. imperator, O. servus, O. signipes, O. tulcanensis, O. virtuosus and O. vocatus are described as new. Opius chilensis de Santis is redescribed. Important morphological details of the newly described or redescribed species are figured.

Gezüchtete Opiinae aus dem Zoologischen Museum der Humboldt‐Universität zu Berlin (Hymenoptera, Braconidae)

Opius clidogastrae, Opius compressiventris, Opius periclymenii und Opius veratri werden als neue Arten beschrieben. 30 weitere Arten werden mit ihren hier festgestellten Wirten, deren Wirtspflanzen, Fundorten, Sammeldaten und bereits bekannten Wirten listenmasig festgehalten. Das bisher unbekannte ♀ von Opius curtifemur Fi. und das bis jetzt noch nicht festgestellte von Opius striatus (Forst.) werden nachgewiesen.

Die Literatur uber die bereits fruher neu- oder wiederbeschriebenen Arten wird zitiert. Summary The present paper deals with a new taxonomic revision of the neotropic species of the pallipes-group of the genus Opius Wesmael. 38 species are summarized in the key for identification, and their distribution is indicated. Entomologia Experimentalis Et Applicata, 2002Co-Authors: Maurizio Calvitti, Riccardo Moretti, Marco Antonelli, Renato C BautistaAbstract:To date, information is wanting with regard to the use of new exotic parasitoids against olive fruit fly, Bactrocera (=Dacus) oleae (Gmelin) (Diptera: Tephritidae), a serious pest of olives Olea europaea L., in the Mediterranean basin. We investigated the oviposition response and developmental biology on B. oleae of FOpius (=Biosteres) arisanus (Sonan) (=Opius oophilus Fullaway) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), an egg-pupal parasitoid of tephritid fruit flies, never tested before as a potential parasitoid of this host. Our results showed that olive fruits infested with B. oleae eggs exerted a relevant attraction to gravid F. arisanus and represented a stimulus for oviposition. Nevertheless they were not as attractive to female parasitoids as the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann (Diptera: Tephritidae), eggs infested papaya fruits (Carica papaya L.). In our experimental conditions, F. arisanus completed development in B. oleae within 33 ± 1.7 days (males) and 35 ± 1.6 (females). Increases in host egg to female parasitoid ratios of 1:1, 5:1, 10:1 and 20:1 corresponded with decreases in the percentage of B. oleae parasitisation and host killing but corresponded also with increases in absolute parasitisation. Our findings are discussed in light of possibilities of utilising F. arisanus for biological control of olive fruit fly.

The fruit fly parasitoid FOpius arisanus: reproductive attributes of pre-released females and the use of added sugar as a potential food supplement in the field

VargasAbstract:FOpius (= Biosteres) arisanus (Sonan) (= Opius oophilus Fullaway) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is an egg-pupal parasitoid of tephritid fruit flies. Small scale releases of F. arisanus were undertaken in coffee, Coffea arabica L., on the island of Kauai, to evaluate its potential for suppression of fruit fly populations. In conjunction with field releases, assays were conducted to determine the quality of pre-released parasitoids. In addition, the suitability of various sugars as potential food supplements in the field was evaluated. Spermathecal dissection showed that >70% of a total 1.7 million females released in 1998 and 1999 were successfully mated. Moreover, a sperm rating of 2.5–2.6 indicated that the spermathecae of inseminated females were 50% full. There were 85-137 matured eggs (mean =101.7±11.5) in the ovaries of mated or virgin females. When honey was replaced with ripe coffee and water, ripe coffee, or water alone, 10 days after emergence, females remained alive for another 5.5, 5.4, and 4.9 days, respectively. Implications of host mortality on the economics of FOpius arisanus (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) mass rearing
BioControl, 2001Co-Authors: Ernest J. Harris, Renato C BautistaAbstract:FOpius (= Biosteres ) arisanus (Sonan) (= Opius oophilus Fullaway) is an egg-pupal parasitoid of tephritid fruit flies. Our breakthrough in the development of a laboratory-adapted strain of F. arisanus facilitated insectary rearing of parasitoids in large numbers. First colonized in captivity in 1989, F. arisanus has been reared routinely on the oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera (= Dacus ) dorsalis (Hendel), its natural host. Parasitization by F. arisanus results in the latent death of developing hosts. Host mortality data are presented in a life table to estimate cost of parasitization on the economics of F. arisanus mass rearing. Percent kills of 10, 32, and 76% exerted by F. arisanus on the egg, larval, and pupal stages of the rearing hosts, respectively, resulted in a mean parasitoid recovery of 23.6%. The production cost was estimated by integrating life table data with the costs of rearing supplies and materials and personnel-hours requirements. Production of 1 million parasitoid adults requires the exposure of 4.2 million B. dorsalis eggs (= propagation hosts). We estimated the cost of producing 1 million parasitoids to be $2,363.30 and identified the most expensive aspects of F. arisanus rearing. Recommendations for streamlining the rearing process to reduce costs are provided.

New species and host records of New World, mostly Neotropical, opiine Braconidae (Hymenoptera) reared from flower-infesting, stem-galling, and stem-mining Tephritidae (Diptera).

NorrbomAbstract:New host records (all members of the family Tephritidae) are presented for 14 newly described species of opiine Braconidae from the neotropics and two previously described species, one from the neotropics and one from the Nearctic Region. Doryctobracon anneae Wharton, Opius baderae Wharton, O. baeblus Wharton, O. cablus Wharton, O. dablus Wharton, O. danielsae Wharton, O. gabriellae Wharton, O. godfrayi Wharton, O. marshi Wharton, O. nablus Wharton, O. pipitae Wharton, O. stecki Wharton, O. taramegillae Wharton, and O. yoderi Wharton are newly described. Hosts are newly recorded for the previously described species Opius nympha Fischer and O. peleus Fischer. A key is presented to Opiinae that have been reared from flower, stem, and leaf feeding tephritids in the New World. Host and host plant associations are discussed; a few of the tephritid host plant records are also new. Opius cosa (Fischer), is a comb. n.

The description is based in part on two individuals reared from Sepsisoma erythrocephalum infesting shoots of the grass Paspalum fasciculatum. This is the first record of members of the Opiinae attacking species in the dipteran family Richardiidae. The Opius ingenticornis species group is proposed and delineated to accommodate this and several putatively related species formerly included in Opius (Merotrachys), Opius (PendOpius), and Opius (IlicOpius). A key to the species of this group is provided. Descriptions and diagnoses are referenced to the Hymenoptera Anatomy Ontology.

These are Diachasmimorpha martinalujai Wharton reared from Rhagoletis infesting fruits of Crataegus spp., Diachasmimorpha norrbomi Wharton reared from Euphranta mexicana infesting fruits of Ribes pringlei, Eurytenes (Stigmatopoea) norrbomi Wharton reared from Trypeta concolor mining leaves of Barkleyanthus salicifolia and Eurytenes (Stigmatopoea) maya Wharton reared from Rhagoletis pomonella infesting apples and fruits of Crataegus spp. Morphological features of the first metasomal segment and occipital carina, useful for placement of these species, are discussed relative to the genera Diachasmimorpha, Eurytenes, LorenzOpius, TubiformOpius, and Opius s.l. Descriptions and diagnoses are referenced to the Hymenoptera Anatomy Ontology. The following represent new combinations: Diachasmimorpha hildagensis, LorenzOpius euryteniformis, and TubiformOpius tubibasis. Revised diagnoses are provided for Diachasmimorpha hildagensis, Diachasmimorpha mexicana, Diachasmimorpha sanguinea, Eurytenes (Stigmatopoea), LorenzOpius, LorenzOpius euryteniformis, TubiformOpius, TubiformOpius tubigaster, TubiformOpius tubibasis, Opius incoligma, and Opius rugicoxis. Two species groups are delineated within LorenzOpius and a key to species of Diachasmimorpha occurring in the New World is provided.
