selective broadcasting of digital video signals over a wdm passive Optical Network
IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2005Co-Authors: M. Khanal, Chang-joon Chae, R S TuckerAbstract:Using a common Optical modulator for baseband modulation and subcarrier multiplexing, and by controlling the individual transmitter laser bias at the central office, selective broadcasting of a 155-Mb/s digital video signal over a WDM passive Optical Network is demonstrated with a 1-Gb/s downstream data signal being simultaneously transmitted. A power penalty <0.5dB is observed for both signals at 10/sup -9/ bit-error rate.

editorial passive Optical Network pon supported Networking
Optical Switching and Networking, 2014Co-Authors: Marilet De Andrade, Martin Maier, Michael P Mcgarry, Martin ReissleinAbstract:In this editorial, we first set the context for the subject matter of this special issue on passive Optical Network (PON) supported Networking. This context includes a discussion of Optical Networking in all segments of a global communication Network and the emphasis of the importance of PONs in the access Network as well as their role supporting other communication Network technologies. We follow this broader context with an introduction to the articles appearing in this special issue. Lastly, we conclude this editorial with a broad outlook to the future of PONs in communication Networks.

ethernet passive Optical Network architectures and dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithms
IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials, 2008Co-Authors: Michael P Mcgarry, Martin Reisslein, Martin MaierAbstract:We compile and classify the research work conducted for Ethernet passive Optical Networks. We examine PON architectures and dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithms. Our classifications provide meaningful and insightful presentations of the prior work on EPONs. The main branches of our classification of DBA are: grant sizing, grant scheduling, and Optical Network unit queue scheduling. We further examine the topics of QoS support, as well as fair bandwidth allocation. The presentation allows those interested in advancing EPON research to quickly understand what already was investigated and what requires further investigation. We summarize results where possible and explicitly point to future avenues of research.

a pon system suitable for interNetworking Optical Network units using a fiber bragg grating on the feeder fiber
IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 1999Co-Authors: Chang-joon Chae, Seungtak Lee, Geunyoung Kim, Heesang ParkAbstract:We propose a simple method for interconnecting a group of Optical Network units (ONUs) dispersed throughout the customer premises, yet retaining the features of the conventional passive Optical Network (PON) system. A fiber Bragg grating on the feeder fiber near the star coupler reflects the light from an ONU and broadcasts it to all ONUs through the coupler. We experimentally demonstrated its feasibility using two wavelengths: one for the conventional PON and the other for interNetworking ONUs.

role of Optical Network virtualization in cloud computing invited
IEEE\ OSA Journal of Optical Communications and Networking, 2013Co-Authors: Shuping Peng, Reza Nejabati, Dimitra SimeonidouAbstract:New and emerging Internet applications are increasingly becoming high-performance and Network-based, relying on Optical Network and cloud computing services. Due to the accelerated evolution of these applications, the flexibility and efficiency of the underlying Optical Network infrastructure as well as the cloud computing infrastructure [i.e., data centers (DCs)] become more and more crucial. In order to achieve the required flexibility and efficiency, coordinated provisioning of DCs and Optical Network interconnecting DCs is essential. In this paper, we address the role of high-performance dynamic Optical Networks in cloud computing environments. A DC as a service architecture for future cloud computing is proposed. Central to the proposed architecture is the coordinated virtualization of Optical Network and IT resources of distributed DCs, enabling the composition of virtual infrastructures (VIs). During the composition process of the multiple coexisting but isolated VIs, the unique characteristics of Optical Networks (e.g., Optical layer constraints and impairments) are addressed and taken into account. The proposed VI composition algorithms are evaluated over various Network topologies and scenarios. The results provide a set of guidelines for the Optical Network and DC infrastructure providers to be able to effectively and optimally provision VI services to users and satisfy their requirements.

Scalable Passive Optical Network Architecture for Reliable Service Delivery
Journal of Optical Communications and Networking, 2011Co-Authors: Jing Chen, Mohsan Niaz Chughtai, Lena Wosinska, Marco ForzatiAbstract:A scalable and reliable architecture for both a wavelength division multiplexing passive Optical Network and a hybrid wavelength and time division multiplexing passive Optical Network with self-healing capability is presented and evaluated. Our protection scheme is compatible with a cascaded arrayed waveguide grating that can accommodate an ultra-large number of end users. A simple interconnection pattern between two adjacent Optical Network units (ONUs) is applied in order to provide protection for distributed fibers between a remote node and the ONUs. Therefore, the investment cost on a per-user basis can be significantly reduced. Meanwhile, the performance evaluation shows that our approach can achieve high connection availability while maintaining the support of long reach and high splitting ratio.
