    Abstract:

    Abstract We present a detailed discussion of the fundamental mechanisms for recently observed nonlinear electro-Optical Wave mixing effects in nematic liquid crystal films. Experimental results on photoconductivity, photorefractive-like two beam coupling, beam amplification, self-diffraction, and storage holographic grating formation in dye- and Fullerene C60 and C61 doped nematic films are presented along with a review of two- and four- Wave mixing theories. Nematic liquid crystal films are shown to be potentially useful for adaptive and Optical storage applications.

    Abstract:

    We study the effects of an intensity dependence in the nonlinear index change coefficient on transient and steady-state Optical Wave mixing and self-diffractions, using the temperature-dependent thermal index change of a nematic liquid crystal as a model material. We show that the nonsinusoidal index grating created by a sinusoidal Optical intensity grating has significant influence on the phases and amplitudes of the multiWave mixing processes. Experimental results on the intensity distribution of the multiorder diffractions in a nematic liquid-crystal film near the phase transition temperature are also presented to illustrate the basic effects.

    Abstract:

    We present a detailed theoretical discussion of the fundamental mechanisms for the recently observed nonlinear electro-Optical effects in nematic liquid crystal films. Detailed expressions for the three principal mechanisms for space charge fields formation and various dielectric, conductivity and flow induced torques that are responsible for the liquid crystal director axis reorientation process are derived. We have observed strong Optical Wave mixing effects such as two-beam energy coupling and self-diffraction; the observed effects, their magnitude and dynamics, and dependencies on various physical parameters are found to be in good agreement with theories.
