  • The Pollination Of Stenorrhynchos Lanceolatus (aublet) L. C. Rich. (Orchidaceae: Spiranthinae) By Hummingbirds In Southeastern Brazil
    2015
    Co-Authors: Singer R.b., Sazima M.
    Abstract:

Hummingbird pollination is documented for a natural population of Stenorrhynchos lanceolatus Aublet. L. C. Rich. occurring in Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil. At the study site the plants are pollinated by Phaethornis eurynome (Phaethorninae), Thalurania glaucopis (females only) and Leucochloris albicollis (Trochilinae). The plants offer nectar as a reward and the pollinaria become stuck to the surface of the hummingbird's bill while it is probing the flowers. The orchid population received a few (0-4) hummingbird visits per day, with about 83% of the flowers being pollinated. In spite of the low frequency of visits, the granular structure of the pollinarium plus the behaviour of the most frequent pollinators, which tend to visit all the fresh-looking flowers of each inflorescence, a very high fruiting success was promoted. Experimental evidence suggests that the pollinaria may remain up to 6.30 hours on the hummingbird's bill, enhancing the chances of cross-pollination and long-distance pollen flow.22303/04/15221227Ackermann, J.D., (1995), An orchid flora of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. • Osmophore Structure And Phylogeny Of Cirrhaea (Orchidaceae, Stanhopeinae)
    Blackwell Publishing Ltd, 2015
    Co-Authors: Pansarin L.m., Pansarin E.r., Sazima M.
    Abstract:

Phylogenetic relationships and osmophore evolution of six Cirrhaea spp. were studied. Floral morphology was analysed using fresh flowers, and osmophore anatomy was determined on the basis of fixed flowers. Phylogenetic relationships of Cirrhaea were inferred on the basis of internal transcribed spacer (ITS), matK and trnL-F regions using maximum parsimony and Bayesian analyses. Floral morphology and osmophore structure vary among species. All Cirrhaea osmophores have a secretory epidermis without papillae. Cirrhaea is monophyletic and includes three subclades: (1) C.dependens/C.nasuta, with a secretory cylindrical protuberance at the base of the labellar midlobe; (2) C.fuscolutea/C.longiracemosa, with a secretory tissue at the base of the shell-shaped midlobe; and (3) C.loddigesii/C.seidelii with secretory tissue on the inner surface of the lateral lobes. The features of the flowers and osmophores in Cirrhaea spp. extend our knowledge of the diversity of secretory structures in Stanhopeinae, and demonstrate that floral morphology reflects phylogenetic relationships in Cirrhaea.1763369383Antón, S., Kamińska, M., Stpiczyńska, M., Comparative osmophore structure in the flower of Stanhopea graveolens Lindley and Cycnoches chlorochilon Klotzsch (Orchidaceae) (2012) Acta Agrobotanica, 65, pp. 11-22Ascensão, L., Francisco, A., Cotrim, H., Pais, M.S., Comparative structure of the labellum in Ophrys fusca and O.lutea (Orchidaceae) (2005) American Journal of Botany, 92, pp. 1059-1067Barros, F., Vinhos, F., Rodrigues, V.T., Barberena, F.F.V.A., Fraga, C.N., Pessoa, E.M., Forster, W., Menini Neto, L., Orchidaceae (2014) Lista de Espécies da Flora do Brasil, , http://floradobrasil.jbrj.gov.br/jabot/floradobrasil, Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro. Abstract:

The phenology, floral morphology, pollination mechanisms and reproductive biology of Grobya amherstiae Lindl. were studied in two populations located in altitudinal forests at Serra do Japi, Jundiaí, São Paulo State, Brazil. The flowering occurs in summer and lasts about one month (part of February and March). The flowers of an inflorescence open almost simultaneously, in the morning, and each lasts about seven to eight days. The flowers release a honey-like fragrance. At both populations G. amherstiae was pollinated by Paratetrapedia fervida Smith (Anthophoridae) bees, which collect floral oils produced by trichomatic elaiophores at the apex of the lip and the column basis. At one of the populations, besides bees individuals of a Curculionid beetle of the genus Montella were recorded, which perform selfpollination on the majority of the flowers. Grobya amherstiae is self-compatible but pollinator dependent. The females of Montella sp. oviposit in the ovary and their larvae consume the seeds. However, the number of fruits parasitized by the larvae is low when compared with the amount of fruits produced. Since natural fruit set is low, the beetles contribute positively for the reproductive success of G. amherstiae at least in one of the populations.292251258ACKERMAN, J.D., Mechanisms and evolution of food-deceptive pollination systems in orchids (1986) Lindleyana, 1, pp. 108-113ACKERMAN, J.D., MONTALVO, A.M., Short-and long-term limitations to fruit production in a tropical orchid (1990) Ecology, 71, pp. 263-272ACKERMAN, J.D., OLIVER, J.C., Reproductive biology of Oncidium variegatum: Moon phases, pollination, and fruit set (1985) American Orchid Society Bulletin, 54, pp. 326-329ARNOLD, R.M., Pollination, predation and seed set in Linaria vulgaris (Scrophulariaceae) (1982) American Midland Naturalist, 107, pp. 360-369BARROS, F., LOURENÇO, R.A., Synopsis of the Brazilian orchid genus Grobya, with the description of two new species (2004) Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 145, pp. 119-127BONDAR, G., Notas entomológicas da Bahia.
