social networks and spatial configuration how office layouts drive social Interaction
Social Networks, 2012Co-Authors: Kerstin Sailer, Ian MccullohAbstract:Abstract This paper analyzes the spatial dimensions of office layouts in diverse knowledge-intensive workplace environments based on the theoretical and methodological propositions of Space Syntax, and brings this together with the analysis of intra-Organizational Interaction networks. Physical distances between agents are modeled in different ways and used as explanatory variables in exponential random graph modeling. The paper shows that spatial configuration in offices can be considered an important but not sole rationale for tie formation. Furthermore, it is shown that spatial distance measures based on detailed configurational analysis outperform simple Euclidean distance metrics in predicting social ties.

Organizational motivation and inter Organizational Interaction in construction innovation in singapore
Construction Management and Economics, 2003Co-Authors: Mohammed Fadhil Dulaimi, Florence Yean Yng Ling, Arun BajracharyaAbstract:This paper examines the individual firm's motivation to adopt innovation in a construction project, and the inter-Organizational Interactions of relevant parties involved in innovation. Based on the theory of Organizational motivation and inter-Organizational relationships, seven hypotheses are set out. These hypotheses are tested using a structured questionnaire, and data were collected via a postal survey. From the results, it is concluded that an innovative proposal may be successfully implemented in the project if effort is put into carrying the innovation through, and there are high expected goals, favourable, results and high commitment. Firms need to be motivated to adopt the innovation, be optimistic about the results and exert additional effort. Incentives for the supporting parties need to be substantial to persuade them to participate in the innovation. In addition, the innovation should be designed such that it could draw all upstream and downstream parties together, and all their interests are looked after in the project.

Dominance, Deference, and Egalitarianism in Organizational Interaction: A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Power and Politeness
Organization Science, 1996Co-Authors: David Alan MorandAbstract:Organizational literature has long presumed that power is communicated and enacted through behaviors exchanged at the level of face-to-face Interaction. Little research, however, has investigated this aspect of power. The author explores how power is embedded in manners of speech exchanged in everyday Interaction among superiors and subordinates. He draws upon the sociolinguistic theory of “politeness.” Politeness, linguistic behaviors used to demonstrate regard and consideration for others, is hypothesized to be sensitive to the social distribution of power. Low power actors are most likely to use linguistic politeness behaviors because such behaviors minimize the possibility of conflict with superiors. Results of a laboratory study confirm that politeness behaviors are sensitive to the distribution of formal authority in organizations. When superiors use politeness, they are more likely than subordinates to employ a subtype of politeness that demonstrates consideration by intimating social familiarity a...
