    Co-Authors: Л.
    Abstract:

During the current century the recent fauna of Belarus has been increased by 6 species of gall-forming arthropods: 2 species of eriophyoid mites (Acari: Acariformes: Eriophyidae): walnut leaf gall mite – Aceria erinea (Nalepa, 1891) and walnut blister mite – Aceria tristriata (Nalepa, 1890), and 4 insect species, boxwood psyllid – Psylla buxi (Linnaeus, 1758); Insecta: Sternorhyncha: Psyllidae, cherry plum aphid – Brachycaudus divaricatae (Shaposhnikov, 1956); Insecta: Sternorhyncha: Aphidida), black locust gall midge – Obolodiplosis robiniae (Haldeman, 1847); Insecta: Diptera: Cecidomyiidae and honey locust pod gall midge – Dasineura gleditchiae (Osten Sacken, 1866); Insecta: Diptera: Cecidomyiidae. All of them are pests of Ornamental trees and shrubs in green areas and should be considered as invasive. Three species – A. erinea, B. divaricatae and O. robiniae have been already included in published in 2016 «Black book of invasive animals of Belarus». The calculations of physiological and general harmfulness of these pests of Ornamental trees and shrubs under the conditions of Belarus have been made. It turned out that maximum (153 points) harmfulness degree index belongs to O. robiniae, minimum (2.4 points) – to D. gleditchiae, that goes well with distribution their host Plants in green areas of Belarusian regions

  • Complex assessment of injuriousness and harmfulness of terat-forming aphids-pests of Ornamental Woody Plants in green areas in Belarus: current situation and its change since 2007 / D. L. Petrov
    Co-Authors: Л.
    Abstract:

Based on current expert assessments of 7 parameters, the indexes of physiologically conditioned injuriousness (physiological injuriousness), environmentally conditioned and general harmfulness of 55 species of terat-forming aphids – pests of Ornamental Woody Plants in green areas in Belarus are calculated. The maximum values of indexes of physiological injuriousness are for the monoecious aphid species, such as Cinara pinea Mordv. and Cinara pilicornis Hart., inhabiting Woody Plants during the entire growing season. Ecologically conditioned harmfulness is maximal (27 points) for Brachycaudus spiraeae Börn., Colopha compressa Koch, Eriosoma ulmi L., Myzaphis rosarum Kalt., Pemphigus bursarius L. и Pemphigus spyrothecae Pass., while general harmfulness – for black legume aphid (Aphis craccivora Koch) – 229,5 points. For more than a decade, the index values of the physiological injuriousness of non-migratory species of aphids increased due to increasing of the duration of their development on host Plants following the increase of the length of the growing season. The index values of environmentally conditioned harmfulness increased for Myzus ligustri Mosley, Myzus pruniavium Börn., and Phyllaphis fagi L. as a result of increased presence of their host Plants in green areas. The general harmfulness of Dysaphis ranunculi Kalt., Hyadaphis tataricae Aiz. and B. spiraeae decreased due to a large-scale removal of their host Plants from green areas

  • Leaf Gall Mite Aceria erinea (Nalepa, 1891) (Acariformes: Eriophyidae) – a New Invasive Species of Pests of Walnut (Juglans regia L.) in Belarus / D. L. Petrov  , D. G. Zhorov , F. V. Sautkin
    Co-Authors: Петров, Д. В.
    Abstract:

= The erineums of specialized pest of walnut (Juglans regia L.; Juglandaceae) – gall mite Aceria erinea (Nalepa, 1891) were registered during the investigations of complexes of phytophagous pests of Ornamental Woody Plants under condition of green areas. The species biology and ecology features as well as map with the registration points in the territory of Belarus are given. For the first time, in Belarus this species was registered in 2012, among green areas of Grodno. Earlier this species of marked by only in the South, Southeast and Central Europe, Asia Minor, North and South America, Australia and New Zealand. At the present time borders of distribution area of walnut erineum mite is limited in the growing location of walnut in central and southern part of Belarus. The walnut leaf gall mite is the species of economic importance as a pest of Juglans regia trees. Feeding of the mites causes hollows on the leaves underside which are lined with whitish (later pale brown) hairs. Large green (later yellowish) blisters appear in the corresponding locations on the leaves upper surface. It reduces the aesthetic and decorative qualities of walnut trees

  • First Report of Phytophthora megasperma Causing Decline and Death on Celtis australis in Italy
    Plant disease, 2015
Co-Authors: L. Luongo, S. Vitale, Massimo Galli, A. Haegi, S. Berti, Alessandra Belisario
    Abstract:

European hackberry (Celtis australis L.) is a popular shade tree mainly planted in southern Europe and known to be tolerant to dry and poor soils. In early autumn 2013, hackberry Plants grown in soil in a commercial nursery located in the floodplain in Umbria region showed symptoms of wilting, dieback, and death. Up to 100% of the canopy was affected, and over 60% of the Plants were symptomatic or dead. A Phytophthora species was consistently isolated from symptomatic 6-year-old Plants by plating small pieces of collar and root tissues, cut from the margin of dark-brown necrotic lesions, onto P5ARPH selective medium (4). Pure cultures were obtained by single-hyphal transfers on potato dextrose agar (PDA). Sporangia, produced on pepper seeds in soil extract solution (3), were nonpapillate and noncaducous, measuring 34.0 to 85.0 × 22.0 to 50.0 μm. Oospores had an average diameter of 44 μm with mostly paragynous antheridia. On the basis of morphological features, the isolates were identified as P. megasperma Drech. (2). The identity was confirmed by sequencing the cytochrome c oxidase subunit II (Cox II) (5), which gave 100% identity with P. megasperma sequences available in GenBank (GU222070), and by sequencing the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) using the universal primers ITS4 and ITS6, which gave 99% identity with the AF266794 sequence from Cooke et al. (1). The sequences of one isolate (AB239) were deposited in the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA) with accession numbers HG973451 and HG973450 for Cox II and ITS, respectively. Pathogenicity tests were conducted in the greenhouse with isolate AB239 on eight 2-year-old potted European hackberry Plants. Mycelial plugs (5 mm diameter) cut from the margins of actively growing 8-day-old cultures on PDA were inserted through the epidermis to the phloem at the collar level. Two Plants were used as controls and treated as described above except that sterile PDA plugs replaced the inoculum. Inoculated Plants were kept for 4 weeks in a greenhouse at 24 ± 2°C. During that period, inoculated Plants showed wilting symptoms similar to those observed in the field. Lesions were evident at all the inoculation points progressing downward to the roots. Colonies of Phytophthora were isolated from the margins of lesions and identified as P. megasperma, thus fulfilling Koch's postulates. Controls remained symptomless. P. megasperma taxonomy is rather complex since it embraces different subgroups, including host specialized forms (formae speciales), some of which are recognized as biological species. Based on morphological and molecular data presented here, the Phytophthora isolates from hackberry belong to P. megasperma sensu stricto, which is included in the "pathogenic to a broad range of hosts" (BHR) group (1). This pathogen is rather polyphagous, attacking mainly fruit and Ornamental Woody Plants, commonly Prunus spp., Malus spp., and Actinidia deliciosa. Like other homothallic Phytophthora species, it is particularly dangerous due to its abundant production of thick-walled resting oospores that enable long-term survival in the soil. To our knowledge this is the first report of P. megasperma sensu stricto (1) on C. australis and its family Ulmaceae/Cannabaceae. References: (1) D. E. L. Cooke et al. Fungal Genet.
