  • Second-Harmonic Generation within the P212121 Space Group, in a Series of Chiral (Salicylaldiminato)tin Schiff Base Complexes
    Chemistry of Materials, 2006
Co-Authors: José Maria Rivera, Horacio Reyes, Armando Cortés, Rosa Santillan, Pascal G. Lacroix, Christine Lepetit, Keitaro Nakatani, Norberto Farfan
    Abstract:

A series of 10 (2-11) new chiral (salicylaldiminato)tin Schiff base complexes obtained from the Schiff base condensation of 4-(diethylamino)salicylaldehyde and various amino acids, in the presence of diphenyltin oxide, is reported together with the parent achiral (1) derivative. Compounds 2-7 crystallize in the P212121 orthorhombic space group, and their quadratic nonlinear optical properties are investigated. At the molecular level, the derivatives possess similar electronic spectra (ìmax 395 nm), and hence molecular hyperpolarizabilities (â), in relation to the same ð-conjugated “push-pull” electronic structure. In the solid state, they exhibit efficiencies in second-harmonic generation (SHG) up to 8 times that of urea. The SHG intensities of chromophores 2-6 appear largely correlated with a simple “degree of chirality” (dø) parameter, defined from the molecular geometries. The intriguing issue of a possible quantification of chirality by means of SHG measurement is addressed.

  • crystallization and preliminary x ray analysis of thermoactinomyces vulgaris r 47 maltooligosaccharide metabolizing enzyme homologous to glucoamylase
Acta Crystallographica Section F-structural Biology and Crystallization Communications, 2005
Co-Authors: Kazuhiro Ichikawa, Takashi Tonozuka, Shigehiro Kamitori, Atsushi Nishikawa, Masahiro Mizuno, Yoshihiro Tanabe, Yoshiyuki Sakano
    Abstract:

A maltooligosaccharide-metabolizing enzyme from Thermoactinomyces vulgaris R-47 (TGA) homologous to glucoamylase degrades maltooligosaccharides more efficiently than starch, unlike fungal glucoamylases. TGA was crystallized and the state of the protein in solution was analyzed by gel-filtration chromatography. Diffraction data were collected to 3.31 A resolution. The TGA crystal belongs to the orthorhombic space group P212121 or P21212, with unit-cell parameters a = 110.2, b = 317.6, c = 144.9 A, and is expected to contain five to eight TGA molecules per asymmetric unit. Gel-filtration and native PAGE analyses indicated that TGA exists as a dimer in solution. This is the first report of the crystallization of an oligomeric glucoamylase.

  • synthesis and characterization of magnesium and zinc complexes of 1 4 7 triazacyclononane n acetate potential models for the active site of rubisco
    Inorganica Chimica Acta, 2000
Co-Authors: Duncan T Odom, Christine J Gramer, Victor G Young, Scott A Hilderbrand, Suzanne E Sherman
    Abstract:

Abstract Reaction of the tetradentate pendant-arm macrocycle 1,4,7-triazacyclononane-N-acetate (L) with Zn(O3SCF3)2 or Mg(O3SCF3)2 in alcohol produces the six-coordinate complexes [ZnL(H2O)]O3SCF3·C2H5OH (1) and [MgL(H2O)2]O3SCF3 (2). Compounds 1 and 2 were characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The complex cation of 1 forms a polymeric chain with zinc centers bridged in a syn, anti fashion by acetate pendant arms. The complex cation of 2 is mononuclear, with two adjacent coordination sites on magnesium occupied by water molecules. These labile coordination sites may provide a binding site for activation of substrates in functional modeling of magnesium enzymes such as RuBisCo. 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy demonstrates that L remains bound to magnesium in methanol solution. Crystal data: 1, orthorhombic, space group P212121, a=9.0536(7), b=14.3750(11), c=14.4741(11) A, V=1883.7(2) A3, Z=4, R=0.041; 2, orthorhombic, space group P212121, a=8.5949(3), b=13.9694(4), c=14.0076(5) A, V=1681.83(10) A3, Z=4, R=0.0248.
