One hundred fifty seven young adults were assessed using the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI) (Parker, 1986). Results indicate that 99.4% of the sample (n=156) received insecure attachment classification and (n=1) received optimal parenting. The study highlights the importance of responsive and supportive care given during childhood.

How Paramilitary Groups Emerge and Challenge Democracy, Julie Mazzei recounts the story of a Colombian woman who moved to a town in a Paramilitary zone and was welcomed by the Paramilitary Group. A committee of paramilitaries gave her the cellular telephone number of the local commander to use in case of an emergency and told her they would react within fifteen minutes. By offering their services the illegal paramilitaries created an informal network through which people like this woman would report anything suspicious. The story illustrates how in large parts of Colombia paramilitaries replaced the state and dominated public life.

Crossing the Rubicon: Deciding to Become a Paramilitary in Northern Ireland
International Journal of Conflict and Violence, 2008Co-Authors: Neil M. Ferguson, Mark Burgess, Ian HollywoodAbstract:Northern Ireland has endured a history of violence since its inception in 1922. The last forty years have been characterised by sustained political conflict and a fledging peace process. We conducted a series of interviews with individuals who had used violence to pursue political goals during the conflict. This article focuses on the processes involved in their joining of Paramilitary Groups and engaging in violent actions. The participants’ accounts resonate with factors that other researchers have identified as being antecedent to Paramilitary membership, such as having the support of the immediate community (e. g., Crawford 2003; Silke 2003). However, the rational decisions that are revealed in these accounts also show that participants engaged in rational decision making as opposed to being mindlessly provoked into membership in response to an environmental stimulus. These results highlight the degree to which individuals bear, and accept, personal responsibility for joining a Paramilitary Group (as opposed to membership simply being stimulated by uncontrollable dispositional or situational forces).

2020Co-Authors: Yeny SerranoAbstract:Given the start of new peace talks between the FARC guerrillas and the Colombian government, it is crucial to understand the role of Colombian journalists in reporting peace and war.This article presents an analysis on the National Press coverage of the demobilizations of a Paramilitary Group (Bloque Cacique Nutibara) and a section of the FARC guerrillas (BloqueCacicaGaitana) within a frame that reflects over the ethical practice of journalism in the context of war. The results are consistent with literature arguing that ethical codes are not documents dictating how journalists should do their job, but rather they represent political acts of communication which allow journalists to reclaim their proffessional independence from sources and defend themselves from threats.
