  • four modulus swiss cheese chiral models
Journal of High Energy Physics, 2009
Co-Authors: Andres Collinucci, Maximilian Kreuzer, Christoph Mayrhofer, Nilsole Walliser
    Abstract:

We study the `Large Volume Scenario' on explicit, new, compact, four-modulus Calabi-Yau manifolds. We Pay Special Attention to the chirality problem pointed out by Blumenhagen, Moster and Plauschinn. Namely, we thoroughly analyze the possibility of generating neutral, non-perturbative superpotentials from Euclidean D3-branes in the presence of chirally intersecting D7-branes. We find that taking proper account of the Freed-Witten anomaly on non-spin cycles and of the K?hler cone conditions imposes severe constraints on the models. Nevertheless, we are able to create setups where the constraints are solved, and up to three moduli are stabilized.

  • core inflation a review of some conceptual issues
    Social Science Research Network, 1999
    Co-Authors: Mark A Wynne
    Abstract:

This paper reviews various approaches to the measurement of core inflation that have been proposed in recent years. The objective is to determine whether the ECB should Pay Special Attention to one or other of these measures in assessing inflation developments in the euro area. I put particular emphasis on the conceptual and practical problems that arise in the measurement of core inflation, and propose some criteria that could be used by the ECB to choose a core inflation measure.

  • evacuation effect on excess mortality among institutionalized elderly after the fukushima daiichi nuclear power plant accident
Fukushima journal of medical science, 2014
    Co-Authors: Seiji Yasumura
    Abstract:

The Great East Japan Earthquake hit Fukushima Prefecture on March 11, 2011, just over 3 years ago and it continues to affect our lives. In Fukushima, many people are confirmed dead or still missing due to the earthquake and/or tsunami. Additional "disaster-related deaths" have been attributed to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) accident. Mortality among the institutionalized elderly rates after the NPP accident were exceptionally high during the first 3 months, and persisted at a lower level for 9 months, in comparison with similar periods before the accident. This study demonstrates the great impact of evacuation on mortality of institutionalized elderly, excluding inpatients. We need to Pay Special Attention to evacuation of the elderly, regardless of whether voluntary or forced. Language: en

  • Green Analytical Chemistry
TrAC Trends in Analytical Chemistry, 2008
Co-Authors: Sergio Armenta, Salvador Garrigues, M. De La Guardia
    Abstract:

We discuss the origins and the fundamentals of Green Analytical Chemistry (GAC), based on the literature published about clean, environmentally-friendly or GAC methods. We Pay Special Attention to the strategies and the tools available to make sample-pretreatment and analytical methods greener. We consider that the main principles are to replace toxic reagents, to miniaturize and to automate methods, making it possible to reduce dramatically the amounts of reagents consumed and wastes generated, so reducing or avoiding side effects of analytical methods. We also consider on-line decontamination or passivation of wastes to be of Special interest in making analytical chemistry sustainable.
