The full hybrid cluster Romeo has been used in that purpose since a long time in order to train master students and cluster users. The main issue for trainees is the cost of accessing and exploiting a production facility in a pedagogic context. The use of some specific techniques and software (SSH, workload manager, remote file system, ...) is mandatory without being part of courses prerequisites nor pedagogic objectives. The romeoLAB platform we developed at ROMEO HPC Center is an online interactive pedagogic platform for HPC and GPU technologies courses. Its main purpose is to simplify the process of resources usage in order to focus on the taught subjects. This paper presents the romeoLAB architecture as well as its motivations, usages and future improvements.

Journal of Engineering Design, 2005Co-Authors: W E Eder, Vladimir HubkaAbstract:A workshop on Education for Engineering Design was held in Pilsen, Czech Republic. This report outlines a view of a theoretical foundation for both engineering design and education, and a review of the presented papers and discussions. A first basis is given by six main competencies that engineers should acquire by their initial and continuing education. A curriculum structure is suggested to render design education more rational, with relationships to other engineering disciplines. This is supported by references to a set of educational variables that describe the educational processes, and by various educational theories. The contents of the presented papers is summarized, and several conclusions are presented. Retired

Difficulties of design engineering, and therefore of learning to design in engineering are outlined. Engineering design education aims to bring students to various competencies. The parameters for engineering design education are related to the teaching system. They are outlined with reference to several important questions, which refer to the learners (students) and to the complete teaching situation, including the teachers (and their knowledge and competencies), teaching materials (e.g. books, computers), information on teaching/learning, organization, and environment.

As student numbers increase and academic institutions place pressure on staff to achieve more with less and to improve student retention and heighten the first year experience, appropriate and effective pedagogies become critical. Planning studios in most Australian Universities have been re thought and re structured in recent years and Griffith University is no exception. Our paper will draw upon some of the literature on first year experience and studio teaching and learning in general and look at what is happening in other first year planning programs in Australia. We will draw upon the changes made to the first year planning studio at Griffith’s Gold Coast campus and comment on possibilities for and relevance of planning studios; specifically in relation to the first year experience and as a means to address the institutional call for excellence in teaching and learning.
