Functional responses of Pediobius foveolatus to Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata
Chinese Journal of Ecology, 2005Co-Authors: Wang GuohongAbstract:Functional responses of Pediobius foveolatus to Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata were studied in this paper.The results showed that the functional responses of P.foveolatus to host larval density of H.vigintioctopunctata could be described very well by Holling disc equation Ⅱ at all test temperatures.The maximum values of searching rate of Pediobius foveolatus to H.vigintioctopunctata in Solanum melongena groups and Solanum nigrum groups were 1.85 and 1.94,respectively.On the branches of Solanum melongena,Solanum nigrum,Physalis alkekengi var.francletii and Lycopersicon esculentum,the maximum interfering coefficients in the groups of Physalis alkekengi var.francletii and L.esculentum were 0.50 and 0.28,respectively.P.foveolatus did not parasized the 1~(st) lavae,the values of searching rate in the 4~(th) group were the maximum,followed by the 3~(rd) and 2~(nd) groups.The searching rate in the Avermectin group was the maximum,followed by the Bt and Celangulin groups.The searching rates in Dichlorovos and Cypermethrin groups decreased sharply compared with the others,while the handling time increased relatively.

生物防治通报, 1992Co-Authors: Wang GuohongAbstract:In the laboratory rearings at the natural temperature of Nanchang, P. foveolatus could complete 11 generations during late May to early December in a year. Each generation needed 12 to 46 days. The threshold and accumulative effective temperatures for development were determined as 5.28°C and 296.85 degree-days, respectively. Under a laboratory condition of 28°C the average adult longevity of the parasitoid was 5.52 days when fed with 10% honey solution. Removing the honey solution reduced adult longevity for about 3 days. The parasitoid could parasitize all larval stages of Henosepilachna viginiioctopunctata [Col: Coccinellidae], but preferred later instars. When provided with 4th instar larvae in the laboratory, the female wasps parasitized an average of 6.21 larvae in its life span, and produced 74.57 offsprings. The females couid perform thelytoky parthenogenesis. In fields, the peak of natural parasitization of H. vigintioctopunctata by P. foveolatus on potato occurred in June as 28.47%, but in July as 64.5% on black nightshade, Solanum nigrum. The high temperature during July caused high mortalities of both the pest and the parasitoid, resulted in a dramatic decline of the parasitization rate.

For example, disruption of natural pest suppression can be mitigated through habitat manipulation to attract beneficial arthropods and alter colonization by herbivores. We evaluated a push-pull habitat manipulation system for its potential to suppress Mexican bean beetle (Epilachna varivestis Mulsant) and augment natural enemies in lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.). The push-pull treatment consisted of P. lunatus interplanted with French marigold (Tagetes patula L.) and bordered by wax snap beans (P. vulgaris L.), and was compared with a P. lunatus monoculture. Greater numbers of E. varivestis and other herbivores were found in the push-pull border (P. vulgaris) relative to the monoculture border and interior rows of both habitat types. Abundances of chewing and piercing-sucking predators were greatest in the interior rows of the push-pull treatment, and parasitoids were more abundant in the interior compared to the border rows of the push-pull treatment. However, while Pediobius spp. parasitoid wasps [Pediobius foveolatus (Crawford) attacks immature stages of E. varivestis] were also more abundant in the push-pull than monoculture treatment, their abundance was higher in the border relative to interior rows. Phaseolus lunatus plant productivity was lower in push-pull compared to monoculture habitats. Although further refinement is necessary, this push-pull strategy shows promise for manipulating Phaseolus cropping systems to improve natural pest control.

Effects of release ratio and host plants on parasitism by Pediobius foveolatus
Chinese Bulletin of Entomology, 2013Co-Authors: Wang GuoAbstract:The effects of parasite: host release ratio and host plant on rates of parasitism by Pediobius foveolatus Crawford were examined. The parasitism rate was found to have increase with increasing release ratio 10 days after the release. When the release ratio was 1∶1,the parasitism rate was 97. 63%,much higher than the rates achieved from release ratios of 1∶3 and 1∶5,which were 62. 58% and 56. 11%,respectively. Also,different host plants,plant cultivars and leaf structures also affected rates of parasitism by P. foveolatus. P. foveolatus parasitism was higher on eggplant than on tomato after releasing different ratios of P. foveolatus to Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata larvae. This suggests that eggplant is a suitable host plant providing more prey suitable for wasp oviposition,and that parasitism by P. foveolatus is lower on plants with more leaf trichomes than on those with fewer leaf trichomes.

Effects of eggplant varieties on the growth and development of Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata and its parasitoid.
Entomological Knowledge, 2002Co-Authors: Wang GuoAbstract:The effects of eggplant varieties on the growth and development of Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata and its parasitoid Pediobius foveolatus were examined. The mean development duration of H. vigintioctopunctata was much shorter when fed on the variety Shanghaizhiqie, than if fed on other varieties, the development duration of larva and pupa was 5.69 d faster than when feeding on the variety Toutaomo. When the host larvae fed on Shanghaizhiqie the wasps progeny and sex ratio are the highest but the parasitization ratio was a little lower than in hosts fed on other eggplant varieties. P. foveolatus preferred to parasitise later instars of the host larvae with the fourth instar larvae being the most suitable for P. foveolatus.

Seasonal abundance of Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata (Fab.) on Solanum melongena L. and natural occurrence of its two hymenopteran parasitoids

(Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is a poly-phagous pest, commonly infesting solanacious crops including brinjal, Solanum melongena L. Upon its severe infestation on brinjal, it causes considerable damage to the foliage and also to the calyx of fruits. The studies were made to record the seasonal abundance of hadda beetle and identification of its natural enemies present in the region for two consecutive years. The pooled data for two years showed that the maximum number of H. vigintioctopunctata egg clusters on brinjal were recorded in the 27 th (0.40 egg cluster/ plant), followed by grub population in 35 th rd(3.78 grubs/ plant), pupae in 33 and 39 th (0.83 pupae/ plant) and adult beetles in 36 (5.48 adults/ plant) standard meteorological weeks, respectively. It was observed that the key meteorological factors had 35.9%, 87.3%, 66.8% and 81.9% effect on the abundance of egg clusters, grubs, pupae and adults respectively in summer planted brinjal crop. Two natural enemies of hadda beetle viz. Tetrastichus sp. (egg parasitoid) and Pediobius foveolatus (pupal parasitoid) were recorded. Clutch Size Reduction and Host Discrimination in the Superparasitizing Gregarious Endoparasitic Wasp Pediobius foveolatus (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae)

BarrowsAbstract:Pediobius foveolatus (Crawford) that were superparasites of their host, the Mexican bean beetle, Epilachna varivestis Mulsant, discriminated parasitized from unparasitized hosts and reduced their clutch sizes when they parasitized single-parasitized hosts. Prior host experience also affected their clutch size reduction because experienced superparasites (those having oviposited one clutch of eggs into an unparasitized host) reduced their clutch sizes more than inexperienced ones. Host experience, however, did not significantly affect oviposition durations or clutch sizes of wasps when they subsequently acted as primary parasites. Adult female P. foveolatus emerged with a mean of 50.87 ready-to-lay eggs. Their emergent clutch size is correlated with their adult size. Hence, P. foveolatus reduced their clutch sizes in response to their hosts’ parasitized condition, not in response to egg limitation. Superparasites can discriminate parasitized hosts as early as 1 h after initial host parasitization. The duration of the primary parasitization affected the degree of superparasitization curtailment. No statistical difference in the oviposition durations of superparasites was detected when they oviposited into conspecifically versus self-parasitized hosts.
