    Abstract:

    Abstract Objective Effectiveness of a behavioral modification program on physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior in diabetes patients. Methods Ninety-two patients were randomly assigned to an intervention or control group. The 24-weeks intervention consisted of a face-to-face session, Pedometer and seven telephone follow-ups. Mean selection criteria were 35–75 years; 25–35 kg/m 2 ; ≤12% HbA1c, treated for type 2 diabetes; no PA limitations. PA and sedentary behavior were measured by Pedometer, accelerometer and questionnaire over the short- (24 weeks) and intermediate- (1 year) term. Results The intervention group increased their steps/day by 2744, their total PA by 23 min/day ( p p p Conclusion This Pedometer-based behavioral modification program with telephone support showed lasting positive effects on steps/day, PA and sedentary behavior. Practice implications This study tested a convenient way to increase PA among type 2 diabetes patients.

    Abstract:

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the benefits of a Pedometer and a cognitive-behavioural group intervention for promoting physical activity (PA) in type 2 diabetes patients. We recruited 41 participants and randomized them into an intervention group (IG) (n=20) and a control group (CG) (n = 21). The intervention consisted of five sessions within 12 weeks, a booster session after 22 weeks and a Pedometer. Primary outcome was PA assessed by accelerometer (minutes per day) and Pedometer (steps per day). Secondary outcomes were weight, body mass index, blood pressure, haemoglobin A1c and total cholesterol. After 12 weeks, the IG increased with more than 2000 steps day(-1) compared with the CG, whereas sedentary behaviour decreased more than 1 hour day(-1) in the IG and showed no change in the CG. There was no intervention effect on the accelerometer-based PA nor on health measurements. After 1 year, the increase in steps per day remained significant in the IG, but sedentary activity increased again to baseline levels. This pilot study showed that the combination of a 12-week cognitive-behavioural intervention and a Pedometer has a significant short-term impact on daily steps and sedentary behaviour but that the effects on total PA and long-term effects were limited.

    Abstract:

    Purpose: Objective measurement with body worn instrumentation is a preferred and increasingly common way to gather information about young people's physical activity. Measured samples have been typically small and recruited through schools. The purpose of this article was to present the descriptive epidemiology of children and youth Pedometer-determined physical activity on the basis of a large national sample. Methods: Children and youth (19,789) were recruited through random digit dialing. Participants were asked to wear the Pedometer for seven consecutive days and to log daily steps. Of the 58% of participants who returned Pedometer data, 95% wore the Pedometer for at least 5 d. Daily step counts below 1000 or above 30,000 steps were truncated accordingly, and all values were included in the descriptive analysis. Results: Boys and girls aged 5-19 yr took 12,259 and 10,906 steps per day, respectively. Daily steps were higher among boys than girls and declined by age group in a pattern consistent with that predicted by other smaller samples internationally. Weekday steps per day were generally higher than weekend day steps per day and varied by season. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the viability of using relatively inexpensive Pedometers and methods for the surveillance of young people's physical activity. The resulting descriptive data provide key information regarding the population distribution of Pedometer-determined physical activity that may be useful for identifying target groups for population strategies and other interventions

    Background: Pedometry methods for collecting data in young populations are advancing, but it is unclear how many days of data are enough for population monitoring. Methods: Using random-digit dialing, 11,669 5- to 19-yr-olds were recruited into the Canadian Physical Activity Levels among Youth study and mailed a data collection package. Pedometers were worn for 7 d, and steps counts were logged daily. Reactivity was assessed by examining estimates from the pattern of Pedometer data across days (arranged from first day of collection to last) using a repeated-measures ANOVA. Intraclass correlations (ICC) were computed for the first day and consecutive additional days (compared with the criterion estimate based on the whole week) to determine the minimal number of days required to achieve a reliability ICC of 0.70, 0.80, and 0.90. Results: Most children (>90%) wore the Pedometer for 7 d. Mean steps per day differed across consecutive days (F = 52.7, P = 0.000); however, no difference occurred between the first and the second day of monitoring. Furthermore, no difference was observed between the first and either the third or the fourth day when monitoring commenced on a Monday or a Tuesday. Therefore, there was no clear evidence of reactivity. The first day provided a good representation of steps per day relative to the whole week in terms of both reliability (ICC = 0.79) and validity (relative absolute percent error [APE] = 2.5%), and these improved with additional days (2 d, ICC >0.85; >=3 d, ICC >0.90; and >=3 d, APE <1%). Conclusions: The Canadian Physical Activity Levels among Youth demonstrates the feasibility of national surveillance of physical activity using Pedometers. Two days are sufficient to determine steps per day, and a single day appears defensible in terms of population monitoring if minimal standards for reliability are acceptable

    Abstract:

    The purpose of this review is to update expected values for Pedometer-determined physical activity in free-living healthy older populations. A search of the literature published since 2001 began with a keyword (Pedometer, "step counter," "step activity monitor" or "accelerometer AND steps/day") search of PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), SportDiscus, and PsychInfo. An iterative process was then undertaken to abstract and verify studies of Pedometer-determined physical activity (captured in terms of steps taken; distance only was not accepted) in free-living adult populations described as ≥ 50 years of age (studies that included samples which spanned this threshold were not included unless they provided at least some appropriately age-stratified data) and not specifically recruited based on any chronic disease or disability. We identified 28 studies representing at least 1,343 males and 3,098 females ranging in age from 50–94 years. Eighteen (or 64%) of the studies clearly identified using a Yamax Pedometer model. Monitoring frames ranged from 3 days to 1 year; the modal length of time was 7 days (17 studies, or 61%). Mean Pedometer-determined physical activity ranged from 2,015 steps/day to 8,938 steps/day. In those studies reporting such data, consistent patterns emerged: males generally took more steps/day than similarly aged females, steps/day decreased across study-specific age groupings, and BMI-defined normal weight individuals took more steps/day than overweight/obese older adults. The range of 2,000–9,000 steps/day likely reflects the true variability of physical activity behaviors in older populations. More explicit patterns, for example sex- and age-specific relationships, remain to be informed by future research endeavors.
