    Abstract:

    We examine the Internet’s impact on the cross-border distribution of cultural goods and assess its implications for cultural policy and cultural diversity. We present a stylized model of a two-country economy where governments are endowed with political preferences over the consumption of domestic content and enact import barriers and subsidies to protect it. We introduce Peer-to-Peer File Sharing as a distinct distribution channel enabled by the Internet that provides access to all media products at a low cost. We report two main findings. First, the Internet renders legacy cultural policy inefficient, and the elimination of import barriers and the reduction of subsidized production can be desirable even when governments exhibit paternalistic preferences favoring the consumption of domestic content. And second, even though the Internet increases cultural diversity within countries, it can also reduce diversity across them.

    Abstract:

    We study competitive interaction between two alternative models of digital content distribution over the Internet: Peer-to-Peer (p2p) File Sharing and centralized client-server distribution. We present microfoundations for a stylized model of p2p File Sharing where all peers are endowed with standard preferences and show that the endogenous structure of the network is conducive to Sharing by a significant number of peers, even if Sharing is costlier than freeriding. We build on this model of p2p to analyze the optimal strategy of a profit-maximizing firm, such as Apple, that offers content available at positive prices. We characterize the size of the p2p network as a function of the firm's pricing strategy, and show that the firm may be better off setting high prices, allowing the network to survive, and that the p2p network may work more efficiently in the presence of the firm than in its absence.

    Abstract:

    Approximately 74% of queries in Peer-to-Peer File Sharing systems return no results, wasting both network bandwidth and computational resources. Considering the popularity of this application, this is a significant problem. We propose to improve the accuracy of query routing by improving how File collections are described and defining how peers organize into groups. Our basic approach is to improve the precision of collection description by having each peer partition its collection and describe each collection independently. Experimental results on real Peer-to-Peer File Sharing data shows that our techniques can reduce routing cost to peer groups by 40% with near-perfect load balance.

    Peer-to-Peer File-Sharing systems suffer from the over-specification of query results due to the fact that query processing is conjunctive and the descriptions of shared Files are sparse. Ultimately, longer queries, which should yield more accurate results, do the opposite. To alleviate this problem, we consider alternative means of query processing. That is, results are sent from the server to the client only if they are deemed relevant based on cosine similarity. Based on our results, these alternatives can increase query accuracy by 40% at virtually no cost.

    Peer-to-Peer (P2P) File Sharing accounts for an astonishing volume of current Internet traffic. This paper probes deeply into modern P2P File Sharing systems and the forces that drive them. By doing so,we seek to increase our understanding of P2P File Sharing workloads and their implications for future multimedia workloads. Our research uses a three-tiered approach. First,we analyze a 200-day trace of over 20 terabytes of Kazaa P2P traffic collected at the University of Washington. Second,we develop a model of multimedia workloads that lets us isolate,vary,and explore the impact of key system parameters. Our model,which we parameterize with statistics from our trace,lets us confirm various hypotheses about File-Sharing behavior observed in the trace. Third, we explore the potential impact of locality-awareness in Kazaa.Our results reveal dramatic differences between P2P File Sharing and Web traffic. For example, we show how the immutability of Kazaa's multimedia objects leads clients to fetch objects at most once; in contrast, a World-Wide Web client may fetch a popular page (e.g., CNN or Google) thousands of times. Moreover, we demonstrate that: (1) this "fetch-at-most-once" behavior causes the Kazaa popularity distribution to deviate substantially from Zipf curves we see for the Web, and (2) this deviation has significant implications for the performance of multimedia File-Sharing systems. Unlike the Web, whose workload is driven by document change, we demonstrate that clients' fetch-at-most-once behavior, the creation of new objects, and the addition of new clients to the system are the primary forces that drive multimedia workloads such as Kazaa. We also show that there is substantial untapped locality in the Kazaa workload. Finally, we quantify the potential bandwidth savings that locality-aware P2P File-Sharing architectures would achieve.
