  • ¿Cómo la concepción del falo afecta nuestra manera de pensar y entender la feminidad?: ¿qué papel tiene la envidia del pene en esta concepción?
    2018
    Co-Authors: Martínez Conte Facundo
    Abstract:

This paper analyses some concepts from the classical psychoanalytic theory, in order to think the concept of femininity out. By gender mainstreaming, it can be easily seen how the concepts of phallus, phallic stage; and fundamentally the Penis Envy, affect negatively the way people conceive femininity. I will try to unmask the patriarchal assumptions that distort the Freudian concepts of Penis Envy and phallus; trying to debate the practical implications that still derive from those theoretical concepts that assume male supremacy over women. In the first place, “phallus” is a term that refers to the male genital organ. Freud puts the phallus at the core of the theory and by doing so he is also leaving relegated the female sexual organ. This shows us that he was influenced by sexist ideas. As regards the idea of “Penis Envy”, according to Sigmund Freud, it emerges from the discovery of the anatomical sex differences between both sexes. In this stage, young girls feel incomplete at comparing themselves with boys. This process occurs during the Oedipus Complex, being this the explanation why women are more unfair than men (according to the father of Psychoanalysis). Claiming this is a way of denying the oppression that women have experienced for centuries; that is why this is one of the theoretical constructs that needs more revision. To end with, in this paper I will also outline some theories that may complete Freud’s femininity concept, which contains a sexist bias. It is necessary to advocate for a revision of the previously explained concepts in the light of feminist conceptualizations. It is a mistake to keep on basing a clinical practice on assumptions that contains male chauvinism bias, even if it is unconsciously. Persisting on doing so, would give us a restricted conception of what happens with women’s penisme/topic-sexuality/">sexuality.Mesa de trabajos libres: Estudios de Género y SubjetividadFacultad de Psicologí

  • The Impact of Opposite-Sex Younger Siblings: A Hypothesis Concerning Gender Differences
Journal of Infant Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy, 2010
    Co-Authors: Leon Hoffman
    Abstract:

The first year of two psychoanalyses (a prelatency boy and a prelatency girl, both with opposite-sex younger siblings) is examined and compared using an approach to the psychoanalytic data similar to grounded theory. For the girl, her Envy of her brother's Penis seemed to be a response to her sense of abandonment by the mother. For the boy, the birth of his sister seemed to have triggered concern about the integrity of his body, although separation concerns were also present. The findings in these two cases are consistent with Phyllis Tyson's (1989, 1994) conjecture about the difference between boys and girls. Because of boys' body difference from mother, the threat to their body integrity (expressed as castration anxiety) is more common than in girls and begins with separation–individuation. In contrast, girls do not usually experience such concerns with their body integrity because their bodies are like mother. Intense Penis Envy that may be observed in girls is more reflective of the loss of the mother...

  • Penis Envy and the Female Oedipus Complex: A Plea to Reawaken an Ineffectual Debate.
    Psychoanalytic review, 2016
    Co-Authors: Siegfried Zepf, Dietmar Seel
    Abstract:

Going along with Laplanche's assumption that there is no endogenous penisme/topic-sexuality/">sexuality, the authors discuss Freud's concepts of the female Oedipus complex and Penis Envy and some of its proposed alternatives. The female oedipal conflict turns out to be the outcome of a projective identification with the Oedipus complexes of the mother and father. In the context of the rivalry with the mother, Penis Envy refers to the maternal power over the father's Penis that the daughter wants to have in herself, while, in the context of the rivalry with the father, Penis Envy arises from the jealousy of the father's Penis that the daughter believes is necessary to have on herself in order to satisfy her mother. The authors conclude that in Freud's day such insights were already available, which might have culminated in the conceptualization they present in this paper.

  • Failure to Support a Test for Penis Envy
    Psychological Reports, 1997
    Co-Authors: Nicholas F. Skinner
    Abstract:

Sutnm-ary.-Johnson (1966) reported that significantly more women than men did not comply with the request to return their special machine-scoring pencils after completing a Final examinauon in inrroductory psychology. In the present replication, Johnson's conclusion that keeping the pencils may be manifestauon OF Penis Envy was not supported. Johnson (1966) reported that significantly more females than males did not return their pencils after a final examination in General Psychology for which special machine-scoring pencils had been lstributed to all testees. Although he did not report any data, Johnson nevertheless concluded not only that "women are more dishonest than men" but also that "the concept of Penis Envy is valid" (p. 758). The present replication involved 395 students in introductory psychology (242 women and 1.53 men; M= 19.4 yr.; range 18-44 yr.) in five classes taught by the author during the period 1988-92. As in Johnson's research, "the hypothesis to test was that of Penis Envy: women wdl keep more pencils than men" (p. 758). Two observers blind to the purpose of the study unobtrusively tabulated the number of students who left the classroom without returning the special pencil after handing in the examination paper. The proportions of women and men keeping their pencils were not only almost identical but extremely low (4.1 % and 4.4 %, respectively), allowing the conclusion that keeping pencils is (and undoubtedly was in 1966) far too simplistic a vehicle for vahdating a concept as complex as Penis Envy.
