disorder and democratic development the political instrumentalization of patronage and violence in nigeria
African Journal of Political Science and International Relations, 2011Co-Authors: Ayokunle Olumuyiwa OmobowaleAbstract:Nigeria’s fourth transition to civil rule on May 29, 1999, no doubt gave the hope of democratic, economic and social development for the nation. It was with joyous mood that it was received with seemingly overall and overwhelming conviction of ‘a final stop to military rule’. As Nigeria’s democracy gradually grows, it seems to strive within the precincts of disorder as patronage and violence becomes its hallmark. Whereas these are vices that democracy is supposed to check, this paper examines the instrumentalization of patronage and violence in Nigeria’s democratic structure and its possible implication for development. Data for the study were collected through oral interviews with political actors that cut across the 3 main political parties including Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), All Nigeria Peoples’ Party (ANPP) and Action Congress (AC). Key words: Disorder, democratic development, political instrumentalization, patronage, violence, Nigeria.

pakistan military guided transitions to elected government and the failure of civilian control
2013Co-Authors: Aurel Croissant, David Kuehn, Philip Lorenz, Paul ChambersAbstract:On 17 August 1988, Pakistan’s military dictator, General Zia-ul-Haq, was killed in a plane crash. After Zia’s death, the military formulated the conditions for a handover of power to a civilian government and eventually initiated a political transition. Following parliamentary elections in November 1988, Benazir Bhutto of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was named Pakistan’s first female prime minister. However, the military’s disengagement from direct rule and the rise of electoral politics under Prime Ministers Bhutto (1988–1990, 1993–1996) and Nawaz Sharif (1990–1993, 1997–1999) did not result in the complete civilianization of the political system. Rather, the military continued to operate behind the scenes, acting as ‘arbiter of the last resort with overriding authority in all political and institutional conflicts of significance in the country’ (Sattar, 2001: 392; Haqqani, 2005: 199–201).

Comparison of Key Economic Indicators of Pakistani Economy: Democratic Governments (FY89-FY99) with Military Regime (FY00-FY05)
2014Co-Authors: Ahmed Rizwan Raheem, Parmar Vishnu, Meenai Yaseen AhmedAbstract:The objective of this research was to analyze the two different regimes of government in Pakistan. The Military government of General Pervaiz Mushrraf from FY-00-FY-05 and the democratic form of governments i.e. Pakistan Peoples Party and the Pakistan Muslim League’s democratic governments from FY-89-FY-99. The economic data was taken from State bank of Pakistan and analyzed through T-test, Z-test and F-test. The major findings of the research stated that there is no significant improvement in the military government, as they have always claimed for shining economy or the improvement in macroeconomic indicators in military governments. Rather it is concluded that many macro economic indicators are significantly better in democratic governments as compared to the military regime. So, it is finally concluded that there is a false claim that military regimes are better than the democratic governments in terms of overall economic growth of the Country. The overall analysis are shown and proved that military regimes are not beneficial for any Country in terms of economic and social growth. It is further concluded from the study that military from any Country should not even think to topple the democratic governments because they do not have any moral and legal legitimacy to rule. The major responsibility of Military is to safeguard the geographic boundaries of the country not the political sphere of the Country.

To exclude or not to exclude : A comparative analysis of Sweden Democrats' success and Danish Peoples Party's adversity
Linnéuniversitetet Institutionen för statsvetenskap (ST), 2021Co-Authors: Welin MattiAbstract:The purpose of this essay is to analyze why the Sweden Democrats (SD) continued to grow in the 2018 election, while the Danish Peoples Party (DF) lost over half of their support in the election in 2019. By using a structured, focused comparative method, the essay analyses the similar political systems of Denmark and Sweden, focusing on the traditional established parties’ different strategies to gain back the voters lost to populists. The analysis concludes that the success of SD and failure of DF can be contributed to ineffective strategies by Sweden’s traditional parties and a more effective strategy in the Danish case. Sweden’s established parties used isolating strategies by demonizing SD and their voters as extremists, paving way for SD to use populist political communication. In the danish case, most established parties have legitimized DF by co-opting their stances on immigration. The blue block has cooperated with DF in the Danish government. By anchoring the analysis in theories about favorable conditions for populism, the main conclusion is that SD, because of the established parties’ isolating strategies, have been able to use populist political communication to present themselves as a distinct political alternative which mobilizes voters. DF have not had this opportunity, due to the co-optation, cooperation and broad consensus on their main issue
