The EEG signature of sensory evidence accumulation during decision formation closely tracks subjective Perceptual Experience

Research on Perceptual decision making has revealed a late event-related EEG potential (the Centro-Parietal Positivity, CPP) to be a correlate of the accumulation of sensory evidence. We tested how this evidence accumulation signal relates to externally presented (physical) and internally Experienced (subjective) sensory evidence. Our results show that the known relationship between the physical strength of the external evidence and the evidence accumulation signal (reflected in the CPP amplitude) is mediated by the level of subjective Experience of stimulus strength. This shows that the CPP closely tracks the subjective Perceptual evidence, over and above the physically presented evidence. We conclude that a remarkably close relationship exists between the evidence accumulation process (i.e. CPP) and subjective Perceptual Experience, suggesting that neural decision processes and components of conscious Experience are tightly linked

Reliability in reporting Perceptual Experience: Behaviour and electrophysiology in hemianopic patients.

Tagliabue, Gaetano Mazzeo, Silvia SavazziAbstract:Abstract Patients with hemianopia can present with the so called blindsight phenomenon: the ability to perform above chance in the absence of acknowledged awareness. Proper awareness reports are, thus, crucial to distinguish pure forms of blindsight from forms of conscious, yet degraded, vision. It has, in fact, been recently shown that 1) dichotomous and graded measures to assess awareness can lead to different behavioural results in patients with hemianopia and that 2) different grades of Perceptual clarity show different electrophysiological correlates in healthy participants. Here, in hemianopic patients, we assessed awareness by means of the four-point Perceptual Awareness Scale (PAS) and investigated its neural correlates with Event Related Potentials (ERPs). Results showed that patients, in most of the cases, can rate the clarity of their Perceptual Experience in a graded manner. Moreover, graded Perceptual Experiences correlated with the amplitude of deflections in ERPs. These results call for the need to assess Perceptual awareness with graded measures and for the importance to use electrophysiological data to correlate behaviour with neural processing.

Independent contribution of Perceptual Experience and social cognition to face recognition.

The contribution of Perceptual and social information to face recognition has been typically examined in separate experiments. Here, we take a comprehensive approach by studying the contributions of both Perceptual Experience and social-conceptual information to face learning within the same experimental design. The effect of Perceptual Experience was examined by systematically varying the similarity between the learned and test face views. Social information was manipulated by asking participants to make social, Perceptual, or no evaluations on faces during learning. Results show better recognition for the learned views, which declines as a function of the dissimilarity between the learned and unlearned views. Additionally, processing faces as social concepts produced a general gain in performance of a similar magnitude for both the learned and unlearned views. We concluded that both social-conceptual and Perceptual information contribute to face recognition but through complementary, independent mechanisms. These findings highlight the importance of considering both cognition and perception to obtain comprehensive understanding of face recognition.
