Most Perfumes contain non-negligible amounts of DEP. Rapid and sensitive detection of DEP in Perfumes is thus of increasing importance. A novel procedure based on extractive electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (EESI-MS) has been developed for fast detection and identification of DEP in Perfumes without the need for any sample pretreatment. The limit of determination for DEP in perfume was less than 100 ppb using tandem mass spectrometry on a commercial quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The dynamic range of this method was about 4 orders of magnitude. A single sample analysis was completed within a few seconds, providing a rapid way to obtain semiquantitative information on the DEP content in Perfumes. Solubilization and Controlled Release of Perfumes in Aqueous Surfactant Solution

Since the molecular structures of Perfumes are intricate, it is difficult to predict solubilization of Perfumes. In the present review, the solubility of Perfumes into micellar phase and their solubilization mechanism were described. The characteristics of solubilization of Perfumes in a variety of systems : solubilization of binary mixed perfume system, solubilization by mixed surfactant system, and solubilization by concentrated surfactant solution system, were also shown in this review. Moreover, mechanism of volatility of Perfumes from aqueous surfactant solutions and controlled release of Perfumes using phase transition of aqueous surfactant solutions were explained.

Langmuir, 1995Co-Authors: Yoshikazu Tokuoka, Hirotaka Uchiyama, Masahiko Abe, Sherril D ChristianAbstract:The solubilization of synthetic Perfumes (eugenol, linalool, benzyl acetate, α-ionone, α-hexylcinnamaldehyde, and d-limonene) by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/hexadecyl poly(oxyethylene) ethers (C 16 POE 20 ) mixed surfactants has been studied by measurement of the maximum additive concentration (MAC) and the distribution coefficient between the micellar and bulk phase (K). The MAC of the perfume at any mole fraction of C 16 POE 20 increases with the hydrophilicity of the perfume. The MAC of the more hydrophilic perfume in the mixed systems is smaller than the calculated MAC (assuming additivity) because of hydrophilic-hydrophilic interactions between the head groups of anionic and nonionic surfactants in the mixed micelle. On the other hand, the radius of the mixed micelle in these systems is large compared to the radii of pure component micelles, causing the MAC values of the less hydrophilic Perfumes in the mixed systems to be larger than the calculated MAC. Moreover, the values ofKfor each perfume in the mixture ofthe surfactants are smaller than the ideal K values ; this effect increases with a decrease in the hydrophilicity of the perfume, except in the case of d-limonene. The magnitude of these changes in K values in the surfactant mixtures depends on the relative importance of surfactant-surfactant and surfactant-perfume interactions.

Phase diagrams of surfactant/water/synthetic perfume ternary systems

The synthetic Perfumes used are, d-limonene, α-hexylcinnamaldehyde, α-ionone, benzyl acetate, linalool, and eugenol. In a series of C16POE10/water/synthetic perfume ternary systems, as the hydrophilicity of synthetic perfume increases, the regions of normal and inverse micellar solution phases were found to be extended, while that of the lamellar liquid crystal phase was reduced. Moreover, every region of normal micellar solutions, inverse micellar solutions, and lamellar liquid crystal phases in SDS/water/synthetic perfume ternary systems was found to be smaller than those in C16POE10/water/synthetic perfume systems.
