Both species show a univoltine life cycle. The nymphal development of P. microcephalus occurs mainly in summer and autumn, and adults emerge at the end of spring. The embryonic development period is short, taking only two months. I. nevada develops and grows mainly during the summer, but the embryonic development period is even shorter. Despite both species having a relatively similar nymphal development period, P. microcephalus reaches a considerably larger size than I. nevada. The two taxa behave as predators, but P. microcephalus exhibits a wider prey spectrum. Thus, although I. nevada is more abundant in the studied stream, P. microcephalus appears to play a more important role as top predator.

This stonefly has a very localized distribution in southeastern France and northern Italy. This species is considered threatened. For this reason it is especially relevant to improve knowledge about its natural history, previously unknown. Despite the large size of penisme/topic-nymphs/">nymphs, this species shows a univoltine life cycle. The growth is slow but uniform from October to April or May when the short flight period occurs. The analysis of the gut contents indicates this species is a predator, feeding mainly on Baetidae and Chironomidae. It is notable that the development of this carnivorous species through cold periods coincides with the season with higher richness and density of potential prey in Apennine streams. Further studies are needed to improve knowledge of the distribution of the species and to start planning effective conservation efforts.

Preimaginal feeding habits of Isoperla carbonaria Aubert, 1953 (Plecoptera: Perlodidae)

This species is characterised by relatively small size and rheophilous habits, and inhabits streams above 350 m a.s.l. in the Alps, Apennines and Sicily. In this study, we analysed the gut contents of 72 penisme/topic-larvae/">larvae of this species, with the aim of investigating feeding preferences and to assessing the existence of size-related shifts in the trophic spectrum. penisme/topic-larvae/">Larvae were collected from a single reach, whose benthic coenosis was also determined. We detected evident trophic preferences in the diet: few taxa constituted the greatest part of the ingested items, independently from their availability in the substratum. Moreover, we observed that largest penisme/topic-larvae/">larvae fed on a broader number of taxa. These findings are discussed and compared with data obtained from other Systellognatha species.

Delayed Egg Hatching and Semivoltinism in the Nearctic Stonefly Megarcys signata (Plecoptera: Perlodidae)

PeckarskyAbstract:Delayed egg hatching can influence the survival of aquatic insects by reducing exposure to competitors, predators, parasites, or unfavorable environmental conditions. We examined egg development in a Colorado penisme/topic-population/">population of the stonefly, Megarcys signata (penisme/topic-plecoptera/">Plecoptera: Perlodidae), whose penisme/topic-larvae/">larvae inhabit high altitude streams in the Rocky Mountains of western North America. Five-thousand fertilized eggs were collected from 40 different females and incubated in the East River, Gunnison County, Colorado, until late fall, at which time unhatched eggs were transported to incubation chambers in Ithaca, New York. We used three different combinations of photoperiod and temperature (10L:14D, 4°C; 10L:14D, 8°C; 8L:16D, 8°C) in an attempt to induce hatching. Habitat Selection by Stream-Dwelling Predatory Stoneflies

PeckarskyAbstract:Patterns of substrate size preference of predatory stoneflies were measured in a western Colorado, USA, stream and associations were examined between substrates and other physical and biological variables. Predatory Megarcys signata (Perlodidae) were found disproportionately on large stones that were not displaced during spring runoff. Predator densities were not consistently correlated with any other physical or biological variables measured. Prey densities were neither correlated with other physical variables nor with their own resource levels, with the exception that shredders were positively correlated with their relatively rare detrital resource. Interestingly, five prey taxa were autocorrelated, indicating that they recolonized, at similar densities, the same stones replaced in the same spots in the stream. A field test of resource depression by predatory stonefly larvae

Age‐related changes in the development of oocytes and testicular follicles after emergence in Stavsolus japonicus (Plecoptera)

The number of eggs within the deposited egg masses decreases at successive ovipositions. To clarify the reason for this decrease and to determine the conditions of testicular follicles, the patterns of development of oocytes and testicular follicles on different days after emergence are investigated in the systellognathan species Stavsolus japonicus (Okamoto) (Perlodidae). The size of the mature oocytes in the ovariole peaks a few weeks after emergence but decreases to the lowest level by 35 days after emergence. Several maturing oocytes can be observed in the penisme/topic-ovarioles/">ovarioles of individuals a few weeks after emergence but only one mature oocyte is observed at 35 days after emergence. The decreased number of eggs laid per mass by older individuals may therefore be due to the lower maturation of all the penisme/topic-ovarioles/">ovarioles.

Observation of Spermatophore Transfer in Stavsolus japonicus (Plecoptera: Perlodidae) in Japan
Entomological News, 2008Co-Authors: Mayumi YoshimuraAbstract:ABSTRACT Behavior patterns associated with spermatophore transfer have been studied in several species of insects, but in stoneflies, even the existence of a spermatophore has been uncertain. This study aimed to confirm the existence of penisme/topic-spermatophores/">spermatophores in Stavsolus japonicus (penisme/topic-plecoptera/">Plecoptera: Perlodidae) and to determine the manner of spermatophore transfer. The male bent its body into an S-shape and inserted its abdominal caudal tip between the sternites and the subgenital plate of the female to open the female's subgenital plate. After approximately one hour, the male started to stroke the female's eighth and ninth genital segments with its epiproct. Next, the aedeagus was extruded between the male's eighth and ninth sternites and a spermatophore-like mass was extruded from the aedeagus. The mass contained sperm and was thus considered to be a spermatophore. The spermatophore was placed directly under the female's subgenital plate by the aedeagus and the male then patted the spermatophore with his cerci.

Seasonal and daily flight timing of oviposition in several stonefly species (plecoptera) in the field.

Species with a later peak date of preovipositional flight were found to have a later peak preovipositional flight penisme/topic-time-of-day/">time of day than species with an earlier peak in preovipositional flight season. A later peak preovipositional flight season correlated with a lower light intensity. Similarly, a later peak preovipositional flight penisme/topic-time-of-day/">time of day correlated with a lower light intensity and a later sunset. Individuals of one species (Sweltsa sp.), whose preovipositional flight date was later, flew over the stream at a later penisme/topic-time-of-day/">time of day. Species differences in peak preovi-positional flight season and peak preovipositional flight penisme/topic-time-of-day/">time of day may be driven by species specific sensitivity for different light intensities.

(Chloroperlidae) in the laboratory. Individuals emerging earlier had larger adult size and greater adult penisme/topic-longevity/">longevity. Fecundity was also related to emergence date, adult size, and adult penisme/topic-longevity/">longevity. Furthermore, individuals emerging earlier had more days until first effective mating and tended to mate more effectively than later-emerging individuals. The maturity of the reproductive tissue may differ with emergence date. While most of the later-emerging individuals had a lower rate of effective mating, longer-lived and larger size adults mated more effectively in females of Sweltsa sp. The differences in mating character might affect the effectiveness of mating.

Comparison of two complete mitochondrial genomes from Perlodidae (Plecoptera: Perloidea) and the family-level phylogenetic implications of Perloidea.
Gene, 2018Co-Authors: Ying Wang, Jinjun Cao, Dávid MurányiAbstract:To obtain a better understanding of the mitochondrial genome in Perlodidae and the phylogeny of Perloidea, we sequenced two perlodid mitochondrial genomes and present comparative analyses in the family Perlodidae. Our results show that genome organization, base composition, codon usage and non-coding and overlapping regions, the sequences of mitochondrial penisme/topic-transcription-termination/">transcription termination factor (DmTTF) and structural elements in control region were conserved in Perlodidae. The unique non-coding regions in COI-trnL2 and trnL2-COII were present in Perlodidae but were incomplete or absent from other stoneflies, and we also discuss the conservative property of the sequences between trnE and trnF, trnS1 and ND1. The secondary structure of tRNAs showed that the trnK, trnP, trnS1 and trnW were identical and the trnS1 could not be folded into typical secondary structure due to its absence of DHU arm. Phylogenetic implications supported that Chloroperlidae is a sister group to Perlodidae and the Perlidae is a sister group to the clade Chloroperlidae + Perlodidae. This study contributes to understanding the comparative mitogenomic analysis of Perlodidae and phylogenetic relationships within the Perloidea.

The penisme/topic-new-genus/">new genus is characterized by the unique features of male epiproct (lack of basal anchor, presence of unusually large paragenital plate and epiproct tip), dense sensilla basiconica patches on male terga VII–X and exceptionally large female subgenital plate. On the basis of morphology, no closely related Perlodinae genus can be assigned, although some characters may place it within the tribe Diploperlini. However, our studies show that epiprocts of Diploperlini genera are extremely variable, questioning the present concept of the tribe. An overview of distribution of Perlodinae genera in Asia, and a checklist of Chinese Perlodinae species are also given.

A NEW STONEFLY FROM LEBANON, PERLODES THOMASI SP. N. (PLECOPTERA: Perlodidae)
2013Co-Authors: Gilles Vinçon, Tibor Kovács, Aref Dia, Dávid MurányiAbstract:A new Perlodes species from Lebanon, Perlodes thomasi, is described and compared with its closely related species P. floridus floridus Kovacs & Vincon 2012 from the Balkan penisme/topic-peninsula/">Peninsula and P. floridus peloponnesiacus Kovacs & Vincon 2012 from the Greek Peloponnes. These taxa differ from all the previously described Perlodes species primarily in the exceptional shape of the egg and the attachment disc. P. thomasi sp. n. is a cold stenothermal species occurring in the close surrounding of rheocrene karstic springs on the Western slope of Mount Lebanon. The list of the 16 stoneflies known from Lebanon so far is updated and discussed.

Balkanian species of the genus Isoperla Banks, 1906 (Plecoptera: Perlodidae)
Zootaxa, 2011Co-Authors: Dávid MurányiAbstract:Ten taxa of Balkan Isoperla Banks, 1906 are described or redescribed on the basis of SEM studies of the penis, traditional morphological features, and egg structure: I. oxylepis oxylepis (Despax, 1936), I. oxylepis balcanica Rauser, 1962, I. bosnica Aubert, 1964 stat. rev., I. citrina sp. n., I. albanica Aubert, 1964, I. vevcianensis Ikonomov, 1980, I. tripartita tripartita Illies, 1954, I. obliqua Zwick, 1978 stat. n., I. pesici sp. n. and I. autumnalis sp. n. The types and arrangement of scales and sensilla on penial lobes are summarized for West Palaearctic species groups with some preliminary changes in species grouping proposed. An annotated checklist of the Balkanian species is given and the known distribution of endemic taxa are depicted on maps. Isoperla oxylepis balcanica and I. vevcianensis are new for the fauna of Albania, while I. bosnica and I. grammatica (Poda, 1761) are new for Montenegro and Greece, respectively. Additional significant new country records are provided for Amphinemura triangularis (Ris, 1902), A. quadrangularis Zwick, 1978, Nemoura caligula Zwick,1978 and Leuctra jahorinensis Kacanski, 1972.

Comparative spermatology in Plecoptera (Insecta). II. An ultrastructural investigation on four species of Systellognatha.

Tierno De Figueroa, Massimo MazziniAbstract:Abstract Sperm structure of four Systellognatha species, Dinocras cephalotes (Curtis, 1827) and Perla grandis (Rambur, 1841), family Perlidae, Siphonoperla torrentium (Pictet, 1841), family Chloroperlidae, and Isoperla grammatica (Poda, 1761), family Perlodidae, was investigated by light microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and immunofluorescence microscopy. The spermatozoa of all the species are filiform and flagellate; they have an elongated compact nucleus, topped by either a bi-layered or three-layered acrosomal complex, and a ‘9+9+2’ axoneme flanked by two mitochondrial derivatives. However, some variations have been observed, particularly regarding the morphology of the acrosomal complex, the shape of the nucleus, two more or less evident accessory bodies flanking the axoneme and the degree of crystallisation of the mitochondrial derivatives. Our results support the suggestion that Systellognatha is a monophyletic group, showing a single sperm pattern. Chloroperlidae and Perlodidae retain the plesiomorphic condition of some sperm characters while Perlidae show some autoapomorphies. A phylogenetic affinity between penisme/topic-plecoptera/">Plecoptera and the other orders of Polyneoptera has been confirmed.

StewartAbstract:The drumming calls of two perlodid species from Southern Spain (Sierra Morena, Jaen) are analyzed and described. Nineteen calls from one male of Guadalgenus franzi were recorded, showing a simple call pattern composed of two beats with an average duration between them of 184.32 msec (range: 165-227). This is the simplest call pattern yet discovered in the penisme/topic-plecoptera/">Plecoptera. The female of this species also presented a simple call consisting of only one beat. The male of Isoperla pallida showed an ancestral call pattern, more simple than the other Iberian Isoperla species (I. grammatica, I. nevada or I. curtata, all of them with multiphasic drumming calls or I. bipartita with a notably different model consisting of rubbing). Calls from six different males (the female did not drum) consisted of an average of 65.94 beats (range: 25-83) with a duration average of 1462.69 msec (range: 548-1835), regularly repeated with intervals with a duration average of 22.27 msec (range: 17-30). With this study, the vibrational calls of all the Perlodid species from the Southern Iberian penisme/topic-peninsula/">Peninsula, except Perlodes microcephalus and Besdolus bicolor, are known. Moreover, it presents the first record and description of the call of the monospecific genus Guadalgenus. An evolutionary approach to the vibrational communication diversification in the perlodids of the Southern Iberian penisme/topic-peninsula/">Peninsula is presented, showing a complexity graduation from the more simple drumming calls (shown by Hemimelaena flaviventris and G. franzi) to the rubbing call of I. bipartita and intermediate drumming calls of other Isoperla species, consistent with the drumming evolution paradigm of Stewart (2001).

Egg description of three Mediterranean Isoperla species (Plecoptera, Perlodidae)

The Male Drumming Call of Isoperla nevada Aubert, 1952 (Plecoptera, Perlodidae)

The call is composed of a variable number (mode = 3) of diphasic sequences. The first sequence is longer, and contains more beats than the following ones. The number of beats per second increases during phase I of each sequence. The time between phases is less than 0.03 seconds while the time between two sequences varies from 0.13 to 0.24 seconds. The call of I. nevada differs from the morphologically similar species I. grammatica (Poda, 1761), whose call has been previously studied by other authors. The call of I. nevada contains fewer diphasic sequences than I. grammatica and its first sequence is different from the following ones, while all of the sequences of I. grammatica are similar. These behavioural characters support the separation of both species. The male mating call of I. nevada can be considered to be a derived pattern of drumming, and one of the most complex known in Isoperla.
