    Abstract:

The Permanent Preservation Areas (PPAs) are considered essential for the maintenance of local biodiversity, so that your protection is regulated by the Brazilian legislation. This work had the objective of delimiting Permanent Preservation areas according to determinations of the current Brazilian environmental legislation, and identify the occurrence of conflict between the land use and legislation in Lavras county, MG, by combination of technologies of remote sensing and geographic information systems. The PPAs correspond to 42.33% of Lavras county's territory. The conflict between the land use and environmental legislation occurs in 63.48% of PPAs' territory, mainly corresponding to the pasture areas, bare soil and agriculture. The PPAs of tops of hills showed the highest conflicts with the legislation, with 48.48% of the territory occupied by pastures, and 13.62% by agriculture. The PPAs located in the surrounding of water courses and in the slopes with declivity higher than 45o presented 59.99% and 92.03%, respectively of the territory occupied by native vegetation of semi-deciduous forest and natural fields.

    Abstract:

Abstract Many countries have environmental legislation to protecting natural resources on private property. In Brazil, the Brazilian Forestry Code determines specific areas to maintain with natural vegetation cover, known as areas of Permanent Preservation (APP). Currently, there are few studies that relate topographic variables on APP. In this context, we sought to evaluate the influence of relief on the conservation of areas of Permanent Preservation (APP) in the areas surrounding Caparao National Park, Brazil. By using the chi-squared statistical test, we verified that the presence of forest cover is closely associated with altitude. The classes of APP in better conservation status are slopes in addition to hilltops and mountains, whereas APP streams and springs are among the areas most affected by human activities. The most deforested areas are located at altitudes below 1100.00 m and on slopes less than 45°. All orientations of the sides were significant for APP conservation status, with the southern, southeastern, and southwestern sides showing the lower degrees of impact. The methodology can be adjusted to environmental legislation to other countries.

Co-Authors: Fernando Coelho Eugenio, Alexandre Rosa Dos Santos, Franciane Lousada Rubini De Oliveria Louzada, Leonardo Bergantini Pimentel, Janine Varanda Moulin
    Abstract:

Due to the need of current studies on the Permanent Preservation Areas (APPs) for the county of Alegre - ES, it is proposed in this study to demonstrate how the use of Geotechnologies can help in an effective way to map those areas, helping to understand the areas to be preserved in the county. The study was accomplished in the whole county of Alegre - ES which objectives were: a) to elaborate analogical and digital maps of the county, with the aid of Geotechnologies; b) to delimit the Areas of Permanent Preservation in the optics of the Environmental Legislation and c) to emphasize the importance of identifying the areas in an automatic way so that it can implant environmental projects that seek to promote actions in search of a maintainable relationship between man and environment in a more efficient way. The county of Alegre has an area of 336,39 km2 of APPs (43,50% of the total area of the county). The methodology for automatic delimitation of APPs was efficient, indicating that the same, around of spring (buffer of 50 m), in the hillsides with steepness superior to 45 degrees, hill top (superior third of hills) and margins of the courses of water (buffer of 30 m) they acted respectively 9,86 km2 (1,27%), 8,99 km2 (1,16%), 237,35 km2 (30,69%) and 95,11 km2 (12,30%) of the total area of the county.

  • Urban Settlement Spatial Analysis in Permanent Preservation Area of M’boicy Watershed River, Foz do Iguaçu City in Brazil
    International Journal of Geosciences, 2016
Co-Authors: Luis Henrique Weiss De Carvalho, Sandro Laudares, Matheus Pereira Libório, Marianna Petrovna Ekel, Renato De Oliveira Marques
    Abstract:

Irregular urban settlement increases environmental impacts, especially when these occupations occur in fragile location, as the environmental Preservation areas. In these areas, also defined as Permanent Preservation Area (PPA), the presence of watersheds is common, which is the factor that increases the need of protecting them from anthropic actions. Those actions deteriorate the environment and mainly the watercourses. This research objective is to identify and estimate the environmental risks of M’Boyci watershed River PPA occupied areas by urban population. The risk analysis approach, at this PPA in Foz do Iguacu City in Brazil, is able to support public interventions in order to reestablish the PPA natural conditions. To reach this goal, it was necessary to use cartographical representation images, generated from digital orthophotos analyzed through free geographical information systems. The overlap and the contrast of geographical data related to Preservation in urban areas show that urban occupation reaches almost 40% of the Permanent Preservation area. Complementarily, it is evidenced that the development of a risk map identifies PPA areas characterized by a greater concentration of irregular settlement, contributing to the planning process of residents, relocation actions and recovery of degraded areas.
