  • The perceived credibility of Personal Web Page information as influenced by the sex of the source
    Computers in Human Behavior, 2003
    Co-Authors: Andrew J. Flanagin, Miriam J. Metzger
    Abstract:

This field experiment examined the effects of the sex of Web site authors and Web site visitors on perceptions of the credibility of Personal Web Pages. Participants viewed male and female Web Pages created for this study, patterned after Personal Pages on the Web, and assessed sponsor, message, and Web site credibility. Results revealed that men rated both message credibility and site credibility significantly higher than did women and that there was a significant interaction effect whereby opposite-sex credibility evaluations were higher than same-sex credibility evaluations. Overall, this study reveals that sex differences are meaningful in cyberspace but that the reduced cues environment challenges researchers to locate precisely what factors underlie these differences. Potential explanations include the vestiges of a sex-imbalanced Internet culture, sex similarity, sex and message congruence, and social desirability.

  • Web Page Personal
    2004
    Co-Authors: Mary E Hunt
    Abstract:

Many institutions are now putting information about faculty on the school’s Web Page. Some encourage each faculty member to have a Personal Web Page that students can use to access information about the teacher and her/his courses. This Page can be used for a number of informational aids including posting a syllabus before class actually starts, listing further reading for the class topic, providing access to links to Web Pages that are relevant to the class topic, posting instructions for assignments, and/or making Personal information about yourself available (such as a CV or a list of classes taught).

  • finding salient features for Personal Web Page categories
    The Web Conference, 1997
Co-Authors: Marilyn Wulfekuhler, William F Punch
    Abstract:

Abstract We examine techniques that “discover” features in sets of pre-categorized documents, such that similar documents can be found on the World Wide Web. First, we examine techniques which will classify training examples with high accuracy, then explain why this is not necessarily useful. We then describe a method for extracting word clusters from the raw document features. Results show that the clustering technique is successful in discovering word groups which can be used to find similar information on the World Wide Web.
